Must be 7 only. The thread in question really has lots of conversation about the 519x series of vises in general. The vise for sale that I posted a link to was not a 5198 but if I'm remember correctly was a 5197. It was a highly spiffed up and polished version of the 519x series and at the time I thought others would enjoy seeing it. Sorry for the confusion.

Can ya help me I.D. this USA made CMan vise? I bought it for $10.00 from a guy and when I google the markings it doesn't seem to come up with the correct info. Date? Model? Quality?

Griff, it's the number ending in 56 on the side behind the swivel lock. Picture number two. I think that's probably one of the last USA Craftsman vises made. I think you did ok for $10 depending on what you want to do with it. It would be just fine for general homeowner tasks but anything more and you risk breaking it. I have found two like that one broken off right at the dynamic jaw. If you don't beat on it with a hammer or use it to bend steel you should be just fine. If you decide you need something more let be the first to welcome you to your new addiction!

Any good deal like everyone else seems to find on the real vises. For some reason, around me anyway, everything is overpriced or broken. I'd love to find a 6" or bigger that isn't $200+ or any nice Morgan, Parker or something with a swivel jaw. No deals to be had here and when I do find something possibly acceptable it's been badly painted head to toe and questionable rebuild work.

Erie Tool Works is still in business today as Lakeview Forge, although they no longer make vises. According to their company website timeline, they bought Hollands Mfg. Co. in 1959. Their history page also says Hollands was established in 1887. So there is a rough timeline.

I have a damaged and incomplete 5198 to add to this. It's missing the base and the static jaw appears to have been welded back on.

It sat on FB marketplace - with no indication of model or size - for a while in North Carolina, so I messaged the guy to tell him it was a 519x, and a pretty cool find, but terribly damaged. I wasn't interested due to the damage, but I wanted him to know what it was.

He had been asking $100, but after our conversation he offered it for $75, so I said sure. At some point he had mentioned it was about 100 lbs, which, of course, piqued my interest.

When I finally saw it in person, I might have said something like "holy sh*t, it's a 5198."

The spindle and nut are in great shape, so it has that going for it. I'll probably clean it up, remove the rust, and paint it without attempting to hide the repairs or damage, just leave the weld visible like a scar. It seems somehow unethical to grind away the weld and cover it up. And the dynamic jaw is damaged well beyond my restoration skills, anyway.

If another 5198 appears with a broken spindle or nut, maybe that one and this one can get together to form a complete 5198, who knows?

So perhaps that makes 8 known 5198s, or maybe 7.5, depending on how you count.

What kevin said 43.---That is a beauty.---Had an easy life it appears.---If I had to guess, I'd say it was one of the holdovers that Starrett possessed after they acquired the Athol M&F Co. and hadn't yet started the Starrett logo.---But just a guess.

Funny how it goes, just happen to be serrating Starrett 6" jaws, Daves Athol 326X has the cast in jaws. The serrating on Starretts are kind of tricky, gotta have a good set up to make the serrations look good. I am still perfecting the cutting. Just thought I would share.

Went Pickin’ yesterday at an old estate (everything was free for the taking!)

Went into the garage and found a Chas Parker PAT 1930 976 vise bolted to and old stump. Also found a 15” Crescent which was vital to cracking loose the rusty nuts & bolts holding it down.

I’ve tried a handful of google searches but can’t turn up a ton of info on this thing.

Would love to hear people’s input, knowledge, is it rare, what’s it worth, etc. From what I’ve gathered this thing is about 180lbs (which I believe after lifting it). Pictures attached with a tape held up for measurements.


For those wondering, my plan is to clean it up a bit (remove surface rust, lube it up, etc.) and use it! Anyways hit me with your knowledge!

Aside from the Parker I scored, this guy had a makeshift blacksmith shed in the woods, Where I found this cool old Anvil/Vise combo. This one is in rough shape with a good amount of rust but I thought it was a neat vise and am looking forward to attempting to restore it/clean it up a bit. Haven’t found any Makers Marks on this one yet.

Any one on here snag the Athol 323 1/2 on eBay? Looked to be in good shape minus the old paint.

157lbs. The max (safe) opening is listed as 10 1/2". This is easiest measured / confirmed by measuring the length of the slide from the back of the vise body with the jaws closed.

The 97x swivel and 95x fixed vises seem to be the most common models I see from Parker, a 976 would be less common but not rare. It looks like a good working vise, and bonus it still has the wrench.

This is what I have to do to get a Birtman Tag for my 577.---I have to buy an old clunker with the tag still on it.---Cost me $25.00 but I just can't bring myself to take one off of a compete vise.---This chunk came up for sale so I pulled the trigger.

The blue 577 is a later model NOS that didn't get a tag before Rock Island closed up shop in 59.---The seller had 2 of them, both blue, NOS, no tag, for $225.00 apiece.---I was a little strapped at the time so I said I'll just take one.---The last pic, need I say more.

All this 6" talk and I had to join in. Picked up this Yost Meadville PA no. 106, it weighs 130 lbs. and opens 10".

In all honesty it looks like a turd, it's a protective coating of rust, grease, and spilled paint over the arn. I think it will clean up nicely. The cast-in jaws look good and meet up nicely. There are some hammer marks, but no serious damage. One handle ball is loose, that's it.

And as long as we were on the subject of Craftsman vises recently, I'll show yaw a real tragedy.---I drove 30 miles to Mt Airy NC. to get this 5197 and this nice Chevron Craftsman, and I guess the Chevron was the only redeeming element in the venture.

The 5197 believe it or not came from the basement of the now defunct Sears Store in the Hanes Mall in Winston Salem NC..---The guy that sold it to me said he went to the Sears bankruptcy auction and they were practically giving stuff away.---He said the 5197 was still bolted to the bench in the maintenance room in the basement.---Looks like to me that Sears would have hired some better craftsmen than the jacklegs that would do that to a top of the line vise.---And You would think that if anybody could locate parts for a Craftsman vise, Sears could.---Kind of explains a lot.

Anyway, I've got my work cut out for me.---I can easily remove the outer welds, but that big center nut, well that's going to be a hard nut to crack.---And then there's the missing lock down parts.---If they had of wanted a stationary that bad I wished they would just have requisitioned one or pulled one off the shelf.
