All this 6" talk and I had to join in. Picked up this Yost Meadville PA no. 106, it weighs 130 lbs. and opens 10".

In all honesty it looks like a turd, it's a protective coating of rust, grease, and spilled paint over the arn. I think it will clean up nicely. The cast-in jaws look good and meet up nicely. There are some hammer marks, but no serious damage. One handle ball is loose, that's it.
Nice find Dave. Actually I think that turd is going to polish up quite nicely.

Dave some use BLO, some wax, some clear cote, some just oil them up.---The main thing is to protect them from the elements.---So a good dose of rust, grease, and paint combo sounds more than adequate to me.:D

Here's a belly pic and insert profile of the Chevron Craftsman.

Should have left the flash off.

VA, for the welded center bolt, find out what the size of the bolt is on that (someone here will know...) and get a hole saw. setup in a DP and leave the center bit out and then go slow and easy.

Congratulations - you have another "unicorn" Craftsman transition period vise. It has the <=1970 casting and handle with the >=1971 leadscrew. I have 506-51840 (4.5" wide jaws) with the <=1970 casting, >=1971 leadscrew, and >=1972 handle. As far as I can figure, Columbian was using up existing parts during the transition period.

I do find the earlier castings are must better looking than the later "industrial" style. While not the heaviest vise, I do find them pretty strong.

VA - They make decent "Saw tooth" hole saws that I believe are HSS. I would start slow and make sure the thing is actually cutting, bur I don;t think they would weld CI with hard face rod at all.

Va...."Anyway, I've got my work cut out for me.---I can easily remove the outer welds, but that big center nut, well that's going to be a hard nut to crack.---And then there's the missing lock down parts.---If they had of wanted a stationary that bad I wished they would just have requisitioned one or pulled one off the shelf."

Va, I'll loan ya some 1/4" shank carbide burrs, happy to, all shapes and sizes. The easiest way to remove those welds in my opinion. It would be hard to set up the Static on a mill or drill press and cut out the welds. I am assuming they welded the nut to the swivel base.

Answered a CL ad and offered $60 for this old Athol. Gentleman said he was 85 and trying to make garage space to park the new Toyota Rav4 him and his wife had.

Everything was in great shape, but the beige paint was peeling off in some areas. He used it to make model planes but it was overkill for his use.

Picked up some other items he had as well. I'll put those pics in the CL thread.

Well, it's no "you ****" deal, but I took a chance on a "first come first served" deal today. Usually I arrive as the second served, and I know there were 3 others who had called. I decided "what the hell", since the drive was only 20-25mins.

It's a 1972 baby bullet with pristine jaws, even the end cap is present and undented. Power arm included. Sure, it needs a good cleanup but for $150 I ain't complaining. Happy to have this little puppy in my collection!

Ken, the powerarm alone is worth $150. You scored big time.

I’ve been on a bit of a Prentiss streak here lately. From left to right 522 / 93 / 524 and 513. The graffiti script 93 has a beautiful coco brown patina, I’ll do a light clean up and oil. The 513 on the far right is in almost Mint condition.8180d62089402f83d3e4bba7859537e2.jpg20ba2e6ae265a05261c4114f84618b82.jpge2bc4b3138edea200785e6b4a52a4304.jpge260c54e8ffcd5d2a5c6e00b72bb8ce0.jpg

Thanks guys. It’s rare to find two brass emblem Prentiss vises in the same week so I’m pretty happy. Here’s a few more photos of the 513, the vise was painted red and I just cleaned it up today. This vise is practically NOScf88ce3c45be6ca95e00eb14b6dd0c82.jpge268a1a198fb48081115ad69a7472dbc.jpg134b3d2a0f77a99e2605db436ea2423c.jpg61d19ec4e988613f6212efc238acf523.jpg

Thanks Tool_Scrounge, for the info.---That's making me feel better
about my acquisition.

Thanks Outlaw I know where I can get HSS hole cutters but it's like KMS said, I don't know if I can get it positioned in the press to where it will take the rigor.

And Kevin, I've got a whole bunch of carbide burrs, and man I love carbide burrs, I just don't know if my hands are steady enough to not screw things up worse than they already are.---We got a machine shop 4 miles away, I might take the cowards way out.:D

Thanks VA, I see what people mean about the baby bullets. They are cute little buggers, and the powr-arm is one stout little base too.

They just don't look as good unless you put a flap disc on an angle grinder and clean up those ugly factory tooling marks on the slide, smitty. I can't believe a vise collector such as yourself doesn't know that.

VA- that mint 577 a few pages back is a beauty. And the 5197 you got looks wholly repairable. Btw, the more I look at the 519X Craftsman series the more they look like Athols to me.

Smitty- those are some great pick ups. Especially love the graffiti lettering Prentisses. Great scoops!

Here a Heuer Primus D.R.P. model 4, 5" vise I got for 15 bucks. Of course taken apart with the appropriate time period wrench we inherited from gramps (fireman on a steam locomotive), odd metric fractions, but then the nuts and bolts on that vise are not metric. With the paint it looked decent, but all pitted underneath, severe end play, and super rough machining. Cleaned that up with lots of filing (except the hardened jaws, file stops working halfway up a jaw), made a brass washer for the lead screw and painted it with Hammerite Dark Blue hammer paint (kinda thick, was too warm). Still needs a shim, the ways are worn so much, the bolt has been bent trying to get it tight by the previous owner. The serrations are still in good shape, hand hammered in, not machined.

This just popped up on the board for $99. It took me an hour to get there and the guy tail there were 10 people behind me. The seller was an elderly Asian gentleman that said he sold it for $99 because that was his lucky number.21ea12f154834715ae106b3af1151639.jpg

Found a small vise at yard sale on Friday and after cleaning it up, it turned out to be a #30 Charles Parker.

First 5 pics are of the little vise and decided it would be nice in the last two pics to include it with a Parker 974 for a good comparison.

Is this a Yost 204 vise? Just saw that on the german classifieds website for the Düsseldorf region. My parents are currently staying close to there, kinda tempted but I don't like them square vises.
