I like how you incorporated the mounts for the work stop. Do you have 4 t-nuts holding each plate?

Thank you!

Yep (4) 10-32 Flatheads...well for now Button Heads since I had long enough ones of those. Will be replacing them with 1.25 long. Need to place an order with McMaster but I need to take inventory first and order a few other things.

Now I need to come up with a creative plug for the 3/8-16 Pems to keep them clean and chips out of the Tee-Slot.

How long until the plant gets a 'jet installed?

Probably won't happen in my lifetime Travis.

Besides I enjoy quoting and running jobs for the Plant. Keeps me creative and seeking a better way the more I play with this thing.

Thank you Mike!!!

Like I have said before, you are one of my GJ Mentors.

Keeping a supply of shop towels next to my work, home and shop Keyboards work when surfing the GJ. Looks a little more professional than a drool cup strapped to my chin.

This weekend we had a few accomplishments. My Wife took a flight on my buddies Helicopter.

Friday night when I asked her if she would like to go up she responded right away all excited "YES!!!". Then about an hour later she said "What if I chicken out?". I said I would go up and she would always wonder???

Well she went and had a great time. They flew over the house at about 600 feet. When she got on the ground the first thing she said was "We need to get a Helicopter". So I have the green light...LOL...she was still talking about it last night when I got home.

The BIL, Nephew got the 55 running and driving!!! The new mounts worked perfect. We need to put the Hood an and get a new Driveshaft. The current Shaft will work but it is a 1/2 in shorter than I would like.

attachment.php

First time in 3 years something is not occupying the Hoist. Had to get a picture.

attachment.php

On Sunday I had what I thought was going to be a 1/2 hour job. The AC Compressor came loose on the Skidsteer. Being under warranty I asked if they could just send me the Bolts to fix it. They agreed since it is so hard for me to schedule a time to meet a Tech at the shop during the week.

After they sent me the Schematic I placed the order for the missing bolts. I thought they had just fallen out. Well 2 of the 3 broke off when the 1st one fell out.

The Left Handed Drill bits I ordered through the GJ Viking Drill offer worked well to extract the broke of Bolt.

attachment.php

The next issue was I dropped the last bolt going in. I took me the next 4 hours to find it. I had to remove the Battery and 2 Skid Plates underneath. Finally I found it and got everything reassembled.

I could have just grabbed a 10mm Bolt from stock but I would always wonder where that bolt was??? Last thing I wanted is it hitting the fan and going through the Radiator.

The Assembly process was tricky. There is absolutely no space to work in. None!!! I had to use a combination of Stubby, Flexhead and regular Ratchets along with Stubby Sockets, Wobble Extensions and short to medium length Sockets. You guys who debate the value of a minimalist tool assortment must not work on stuff like this. One cannot have enough tools to accomplish tasks like this in my opinion!!!

At days end the Skidsteer was fixed, I found out I am not in that good of shape based on how sore I was yesterday with all the up and down and contortionist twisting I had to do. All you mechanics out there in GJ land have my respect.:bowdown::bowdown:

And the lawn got mowed. Looking forward to making some progress on the Chevelle this weekend!!! Think it is going back on the Hoist so I can figure out the Transmission Tunnel.

This picture made me laugh. Back in the day the Race Crew were off limits from my Master Drill Set. Most of them could never figure out Chip Load, Feed and Speed when drilling. Made for a lot of dull and burnt up bits!!! Thus I marked my Master Set and they all abided by the rule...LOL...today they are all Master Sets and none of those guys work in the shop daily and now I can take the time to set them up properly.

It's all looking good Pat! The heli ride looks like a ton of fun! I have to find a time to get out there and bring Everett along some Saturday morning. Will probably be winter before that opportunity arises.

Probably won't happen in my lifetime Travis.

Besides I enjoy quoting and running jobs for the Plant. Keeps me creative and seeking a better way the more I play with this thing.

Figured as much.

That's awesome Pat. Glad to see your wife enjoyed her ride in the helicopter. That's something I'll never have the guts to do.

As for your dropped bolt, I feel the exact same way. If (read "when") I drop a bolt I am hell bent to find it for the same reason. Also because I feel that particular bolt needed to be in that particular hole and merely stuffing a generic bolt into the hole, although it would work, just doesn't meet my OCD criteria as I'll know it isn't repaired correctly.:lol_hitti

Like you, I am also **** about my drill bits. I learned at an early age how to properly sharpen drill bits by hand and have become very proficient at it. I've tried to teach co-workers over the years but most have quickly given up on the learning curve and decided it isn't worth it. I pride myself on keeping my bits sharp and in proper condition by using the correct speed/feed and if (read "when") I knock an edge off or chip one, it gets touched up BEFORE it ever goes back into the drill index. Nothing worse than needing a bit for a quick little project and reaching into the index only to pull out a dull or chipped bit that you now need to dress.

Thanks for showing your projects and giving us all something to shoot for as I love your shop, tools and projects.

It's always 10mm; bolts, sockets....:lol_hitti

You know I never heard all the 10mm Socket jokes until I started hanging out on GJ. I hardly ever use my 10mm...but now if I see them for sale in a used set and they are Craftsman USA I grab them and throw them in the spares drawer...just in case I get hit by the 10mm Socket dilemma.

Had to look at that photo twice Pat, to figure out it was a trailer....Looks like some spaceship movie set at a quick glance....:spit:

My buddy the sales guy at Featherlite talked my into it. They build some wild trailers...and I mean over the top. He sends me pics once and while.

I ordered it like it is the last Trailer I will ever buy (have to qualify that: as Tag Trailer, still want a Gooseneck with Living Quarters for Prairie Dog Hunting).

Oh hell Pat, that is awesome.

I'm green with envy (again) over that trailer. Can't wait to see it hooked up to your coach.

Thank you Mike!!!

I can't wait to see it. Exterior is White so I can have it wrapped to match whatever Coach I end up with next spring.

He sent one more Teaser...he knows I am dying to come and get it...LOL...what are friends for anyway...

I am liking the Ramp Extension Door. Hope the Z28 clears without effort.

Your teaser shots are once again making me drool Pat. I really miss my enclosed race trailer but just can't justify one for my Jeep. I have been thinking about an open trailer just to have around the shop for shagging vehicles or occasionally hauling my Jeep to rallies but I'll give it some more thought over the winter.

Been a pretty quiet week at work...the calm before the storm. Was able to get a few projects caught up I been meaning to do.

Mitutoyo had a sale so I picked up a 24 inch Height Gauge and an Indicator. Since it was free shipping I scored an extra 1/2" R8 Collet and a 1" R8 Collet extension. Now I can use a couple of 1 in End Mill I received for free and I can leave my Centering Probe in a Collet.

attachment.php

My 30 year old Height Gauge started to develop a mind of its own. While reverse engineering a part I got a bad measurement and made a bad part...out with the old. In with the new.

In the process of paying for it I found out Monday morning some one had hacked my Credit Card. By Monday evening I had figured out who did and they were arriving on a Flight from Miami to Charlotte and I was working with the Limo Company they had booked the pick-up with at Charlotte to have them arrested. The cops wouldn't move on it until they heard from Capital One...well Capital One wouldn't assign an Investigator to the case for another 24-48 hours...beyond frustrating!!! They could have picked them up with a squad car.

But the Limo Company owner confirmed he would pick them up and didn't show up...LOL...I thanked him for that. He has all the info for the Capital One Investigator but more than likely since it was "only" $6557.85 they will not do anything since I was made whole or will be in the deal. Sad.

Was walking through the front office looking at our new Trade Show parts and saw this. A custom Wrench we made for one of the big automotive Tool suppliers. Pretty cool...well at least I think it is.

attachment.php

Tomorrow I am off to Featherlite in Cresco Iowa to pick up the new trailer. I am excited!!! And my sales guy sent me one more teaser earlier this week. Made the week seem even longer.

attachment.php

And I have to share...2 things you don't see very often: Me in a Suit. And me in a picture with my 79 year old Mother. My Wife said I look a little tired. I was. Went to bed at midnight and up at 4:30 am to drive 275 miles south to my Uncles Funeral. Logged 550 miles...got to see a lot of relatives I had not seen in 6-7 years. Sad it takes a funeral to bring us all together.

Pat, you're like me as it takes quite a bit to get me into a suit. Jeans and T-shirts are my thing. Sorry to hear of your uncle's passing, prayers out to your family. Your mother looks like a sweet lady.

Oh, and the trailer looks amazing.

Oh, and the trailer looks amazing.

I hear you Mike...I have 1 suit. I call it the Marrium Barrium Suit...only time I wear it.

Thank you for the condolences.

Mom is a sweetheart...but I have flashbacks to my Childhood. Picture her with a Wooden Spoon and she is not baking or cooking...and I am running...LOL...after I crashed my Pro Stock Car in Virginia she gave me a Plaque that reads "Don't drive faster than your Guardian Angel can fly".

I love the trailer...

That's a wonderful picture. Sorry to hear about your uncle.

Congrats on the trailer. Looks awesome

~Jim~

See above on Mother...she is awesome however...99% of the time.

Again thank you for the condolences Jim.

Sorry to hear about your uncle Pat. Just remember He's in a better place.

Thank you Gayler. Uncle Mike was 89 years old. Married 64 years, raised 5 wonderful kids. Lost a daughter to Breast Cancer in 2013 and in 2014 his Wife developed Alzheimer's and for the last 6 years they have been in a Nursing home together. He sat with her everyday. That is the hard part to understand but it is not my plan.

Uncle served as a Yeoman during Korea and then went on to be a Banker. He was old and tired. Quality of Life was slipping away and you are right. He is in a better place.

He was buried with Military Honors. I have been to many Grave Side services and I have to say the Bugle Player was the best I heard ever. Not a dry eye in sight.

Godspeed Uncle Mike!!!

I had a great trip to Featherlite!!!

I spent 3 hours touring the plants. They build more than just Car Hauler. Livestock to Disaster relief Trailers too.

The first trailer I saw was a 79 foot Oil Fracking Trailer. Had Slides on both sides and a second story. They are building 25 of them.

Next was the production lines for the Production Stock and Car Haulers. Both Bumper Pull and Goosenecks. They build these mass production for the dealer network and will pull one like mine from the Inventory and take it to their Interiors Division and build any thing.

Some of the most interesting Trailers were the Disaster Relief Trailers being built for Billy Gram Samaritan's Purse. They were building Bunkhouse, Shower and Kitchen Trailers. The thought into these trailers is crazy. All forward thinking. Everything is surface mounted for easy repair as these trailers are put through the paces in very trying circumstances.

Then it was off to see the big NASCAR Transporters being built. $500K+ Trailer with all the bells and whistles. Had a chance to see Roger Penske's new Trailer. 53 feet of Optical Grade Mirrored Stainless inside and out. I got pictures but cannot share them now as the trailer will be making it's way to SEMA as a show trailer for it's first stop. In the sun this thing will blind you.

attachment.php

From there we went and hooked up my Trailer and went over the build details. The Frame and the Floor are done the exact same way as the big Transporters. I can tell when I walk on the floor. It is as solid as my Transporter was. 3/16 Aluminum Deck over crossmembers on 12 inch centers.

The color combination my Sales guy talked me into is breath taking. The "Nickel Floor" finishes off the trailer nicely while adding to the acoustics...no eco.

I was concerned with the rear loading Door design. They provided me with the CAD Model and I modified it so I can load my Z28 with out having to prop up ramps. The goal was put the door down, fold out the Ramps and load the car and have an inch of clearance to spare. It all worked out.

I am a happy camper!!!

Had to show my Wife...and load the Z...

attachment.php

1 inch clearance (+/-.001...LOL)

attachment.php

Side clearance is a little tight but it is what it is with a wide body car.

attachment.php

attachment.php

Later on tonight I'll detail the Trailer Step build.

My condolences on loss of your uncle Pat. For the record, I have a one suit closet too

The new trailer looks great! Love the interior finish and the extra wide side door. I'm wondering how you like the LED lighting and coin floor? I'm lookimg at putting both in my trailer....

I don't notice a side hatch for drivers door? Do you winch it in and out? I know you are a skinny guy, maybe you can sneak the door open and get out? I know I couldn't!

It's a sharp lookimg piece of equipment that will serve you well for a very long time! Enjoy it!

Trailer looks amazing Pat. That is going to look bad *** hooked up to your coach.

As for the loading ramp that was one thing I worried about as well and between the beaver tail on the trailer, the longer than normal ramp (because I had an extra foot of height added when I ordered my Haulmark) my street rod loaded with plenty of clearance without having to raise the front of the trailer like my previous one. I also ordered mine with the floor supports on 12" centers and it was rock solid when driving or walking in it which was a nice change from my previous enclosed race trailer.

Out of curiosity, do you winch the car into the trailer as I didn't see a side door? In my first trailer it had a side door but to be honest, I didn't care for it. When I ordered my 26' Haulmark I insisted on no door on left side as I just winched them in and it worked perfectly. The sand rail was narrow enough I could drive it in without clearance issues.

We added the extra Height which made the Door longer so we could make the Ramp Extensions longer and the "Riser: Taller helping with the low ground clearance issue.

As far as exiting goes. I take my shoes off, drive in and climb out of the window. Been doing that for 30 years. If I load the Corvette I put the top down which makes getting out a breeze.

Eventually I'll add Tread Plate where the tires sit so the gravel embedded in the tires does not chew up the floor.

I have never been a fan of the Side Door. Biggest issue I have is the stability of the Frame cutting that big hole in the side. Featherlite has options to do this but personally I do not like it.

The other issue is the Fender Wells are 15.75 High as measured from the floor so the door still will not open even if the side did. But again Featherlite has a solution for that. A Removable Fender. My issue with that is the seal to the trailer. Eventually with all the flexing the gasket material erodes over time assuming the fit from the beginning is good enough to keep the water out when pulling in the rain.

Even with a removable Fender the top of the tire is 10 inches above the Floor. Still an issue with the Car Door opening. The only thing you gain removing the Fender is 1.17 inches according to their CAD Model from the face of the Fender to the inside edge of the Tire. Still not enough room to open the door.

Not too long ago they changed the design of their Fenders to allow for the inside of the trailer to get 1 1/2 inches wider but the distance between Fenders remained the same.

In the future I may add a Winch. If I do it will be mounted under the Trailer with a Fairlead centered between the 2 front Tie Downs. I have seen this done on 1 trailer a long time ago and it was pretty slick. Only draw backs are it is hard to see if the Wire Rope is spooling correctly and not getting spooled to one side binding the Winch. The other issue is servicing the Winch. But I am sure I can come up with a easy access Box underneath...oh and it can be a trip hazard...

Pat, a friend of mine just bought a 26' ATC stacker and the left side has a large section that opens up which takes the wheel opening with it and I don't particularly care for it because of reasons you mentioned, keeping it sealed long term when things move and wear. His opening is at least 6' long and about 4' (maybe 5') tall and I just can't get past it. Oh well, he loves it and it's his trailer so none of my concern but I wouldn't have it.

I found the fender well height still an issue even with my smaller 15" wheels on my first enclosed trailer with the side door so I seldom ever used it. When I ordered my 26' Haulmark I put a 8k pound winch under the front work bench with an opening at floor level in which to feed the cable through to pull straight on the front of the car and it worked perfectly.

The Trailer step build...I need to get better at taking more pictures.

The debate was do I do a full length Step or a half length??? I figure since the trailer was built with a 60 inch Door to get a Golf Cart in and out without having to unload the Car the best thing to do is a Half Step only using the 1 Door while the other remains closed when at the Track.

Makes for easy storage too.

View media item 96659
I pulled up the old CAD Model from my 2001 Stacker Trailer Featherlite build and modified the width for the new Door opening. The Stainless Mounting Brackets were left overs from 2001 I kept in case somebody else wanted a step. So those are New Old Stock. Back then when I needed 1 of some thing built at least 2 if not a dozen.

Created the Flat Pattern from the old Model for the Step and the Hat Channel.

View media item 96651
Cut the Flats on the Water Jet and then it was off to the Press Brake to form them. This is where a little head scratching comes in. The bend sequence is critical. You don't want to "bend yourself into a corner". Limited by a lack of tooling options (one can never ever have enough tooling), using what I had on hand I ended up having to make a set of "Dog Ear Tools" to fit in between the double returns.

I took a 10 inch long piece of 1/32R standard punch and notched both ends creating the "Dog Ears". Positioning the Punch on the jet was a painstaking task since in theory a Water Jets does not have a Zero corner for reference. I did locate it off the X-Y Zero Fence I made but that only gets you so close. The rest I had to eyeball. Need to work on a Fixture or something to accomplish this.

Once the "Dog Ears" were cut I took the Tool to the Band Saw and cut it in half. Now I can use these pieces on future set-ups.

In the picture you can see the left and right "Dog Ears" with a couple of smaller filler pieces to get the correct length of tooling.

View media item 96652
Formed the long sides first which was easy but normally we would form the long side last so we can use the long tool set-up for the shorter ends first and then do the long sides. Because I did not want to have to section the tooling by cutting it in the Band Saw to length to make it work. The Longer the tool with out "sectioning" the better the bend looks (same applies to the Bottom V Die).

Now getting the Tooling in the Machine becomes a little tricky. I used Duct Tape as a safety measure to make sure the smaller tooling segments don't come loose and drop down as the Ram approaches to make a bend. The outcome when it drops is a loud bang, broken tools, a damaged holder and the possibility of great bodily harm and dismemberment as the warning labels say. Don't want that.

View media item 96653
Knowledge + Experience = Wisdom...Running a Press Brake is more Art than Science. Bend Lines are Science. Knowing when a part will crash is Art. Knowing the Double Returns are 2 inches deep and having the experience before I knew I had to add a 1/4 Shim between the Ram and the Punch to have barely enough clearance to get the Machine to go full stroke with out crushing the Returns. The other option would be to modify the Tool Holders on the Ram making them narrower but that mean I would no longer have a full set of full length Holders. Not a good thing.

Even with a 1/4 the Double return was just touching the Ram.

View media item 96654
Now on the backside of the Punch the Double return can become an issue if it is too long. In this case the Punch is designed with a relief for this purpose but it only provides enough relief for a short return. Here I was OK using a 3/4 inch return. Anything longer and I would have had to switch the Top Punch out for a Gooseneck Tool which I have even less tooling options.

I was happy to see the corners come out as planned. You can always make them perfect if you allow a couple of pieces as Set-ups to make all the adjustments to create the perfect part. In my case I try and get buy with no set-ups and it is what it is. Taking a little more time thinking it through, knowing where Machine Zero is you can make close to perfect parts on the first one. Saves a lot of material and Water Jet time.

The Hat Channel came out pretty close too. All the Rivet holes lined up holding +/-.005 across 4 bends. Only had to tap 3 rivets in.

Assembled the Mounting Plates I made 18 years ago and turned some new buttons on the Lathe. The Buttons will be bolted to the Trailer and the Keyholes will allow for a lift and drop installation.

Now tonight I will get the Buttons mounted and the Step Hung and I can begin the process of installing a Mac Tool Box. Up and down without a step is a pain!!!

Had Garage Journal visitor to the Plant and the Home Shop yesterday. Jesse, aka "jlevers" on the forum stopped by on his Bike trip across the country. Pleasure to meet a young guy following his dream!!!

We spent about 2 hours touring the Manufacturing floor, went to lunch and headed back to the Home Shop spending another 1/ 1/2 hours there shooting the breeze.

Jesse it was a pleasure to meet you. In your travels you are welcome anytime!!!

That picture didn't even need to be staged! After a tour of the plant, lunch, and time at the home shop Jesse probably had that same grin for 150 miles down the road.

I'll let Jesse comment...

Travis you been pretty quiet...how's the Baby???

I was playing on the Water Jet last night trying to figure out a way to "Increment" Press Brake Tooling.

After cutting the Dog Ears on that punch the other day and showing it to the guys at the Plant they asked if I could take full sections to Punches and Dies and increment them. Currently we have it done by the supplier but they charge $90.00 per cut.

So I am in the process development stage. A simple as it would seem the Software is limited as to what you can get by with. Thus I am trying different things to fake the machine out. After some lengthy discussions with the crew here this morning we have a few more things to try tonight.

The current method in house is to cut them on the Band Saw. The difficulty is the material is case hardened .020 deep to RC70 which is hard on the Saw Blades and they tend to walk after a few cuts...up to .060. Then Fly Cut them perpendicular to the base so when you put 2 piece together they are tight and leave less tool marks in the material.

The goal is to Jet them perpendicular and eliminate the machining afterwards.

We may still end up Fly Cutting them but the amount of material that needs to be removed will be less and more predictable.

Love playing in the R&D world...

Need to develop a better fixture system...

The piece second in from the right is .024 thick. It was a trim cut. the goal is to make pieces starting at 10mm, 20mm, 25mm and 50mm thick.

Pat, great to meet you too! Thanks again for the tour -- you really went above and beyond, and I learned a TON.

And yeah @customh, I was pretty damn stoked the whole time :bounce: here's a little taste of what I saw...

One of Pat's old Pro Stock motors...

Hope your journey is going well...someday I am going to be like you and drop everything and roll across the country for a few months!!!

Wow...been a month since I updated this. Life gets busy!!!

I got around to installing the Step on the new Trailer.

Still waging war on the Moles. So far 9 of the little devils!!! The Mole Trap from Northern Tool is the best trap so far.

This part of the year gets to be a challenge monitoring and setting the traps. Going to work in the dark and coming home in the dark has it's challenges.

Saw something interesting the other day in the shop. We are making a bunch of Stainless Speaker Covers. The process begins by Turret Punching a pattern on a small blank with Tooling Holes in them. They then take it to one of the Sheet Dragger Lasers and place it on a fixture and cut the outer diameter. Then it off to the Press Brake and they form the Flange all they way around. They came out nice and flat and the customer is over the top happy. Guess they had major issues with the old supplier. If you are on the Subway in New York you might come across one of these.

Decided to sell the Wallenstein BX62 Chipper since I have most of the heavy clearing taken care of. Now to run an add on CL and FB Market Place...

Took a little vacation to do some Prairie Dog hunting. I was only 145 miles NE of where Mike was. Had a great trip!! the weather was perfect for Dogg'in...

We rolled out Monday night to Wilmar MN and stayed in a Wally World Parking Lot. Mixed a couple of cocktails and ate a Pizza. Got roll'in about 6 am Tuesday and landed in Isabel SD about 2 pm. Nice easy drive.

Stayed a friend of a friends place as "Base Camp"

Our buddies from MO showed up about 8 pm that night.

Between the 6 of us we had around 1000 Prairie Dogs, 5 Coyotes, 1 Badger and 54 Rattle Snakes. The snakes were crazzzzzzy this year. I got 14 myself.

My personal count was 210-220 P-Dog's (360 rounds fired), 2 confirm and counted Coyotes and 1 I shot about 450 yards up a chute and I wasn't about to climb up there and get a picture so it doesn't count.

Barrett Fieldcraft Rifle in 22-250, Nightforce 3.5-15 x 50mm NSX Scope and AWC Thor Raider Titanium Suppressor. Put this package together and I am impressed. Made a couple 600+ yard shots in 18-23 MPH full value winds.

So anyone from the Prairie looking for credentialed shooters left me know...have gun will travel!!!

Friday I picked up a new Sled for my Wife to ride is she decides to brave the cold with us. I will also use it to run the local trails around the house and since we aren't getting any younger we are going to do a little Trail riding at my buddies Cabin. Riding is getting harder every year for these bones. Never thought I would say that...LOL...

Brought home and on the scales it goes. 546 lbs factory fueled and full of oil. 609 lbs after topping of the tank. It needs to go on a diet. Going to be ordering a few lighter weight parts for it and a Clutch Kit.

Need to make a Rack for the back to mount my "Survival Kit" on the back. Worked on the design yesterday...

Impressive prairie doggin' with a realtively lower magnification scope!

I also found the write up on the speaker grille more fascinating than I should. I really like the insight on your manufacturing processes.

Looks like a fun trip and nice looking sleds Pat.

Unfortunately it looks like that white **** is just around the corner again, seems like we were just here having this conversation.:lol_hitti

Our rental tractors showed up last week for snow removal at work so it must be getting that time of year.

I'm just impressed you can keep track of how many p-dogs you get! I've tried a few times, but always lose track pretty quickly once we find ourselves on a busy town. Do you have a 17HMR in the mix when you're out there? If not, you're missing out on a ton of cheap fun. We probably get just as many with the 17's as we do with the centerfires.

B&G I rarely go beyond 10X because of the "Mirage Effect". It amplifies the distortion causing a deviation from point of aim to point of impact. And prefer a Second Focal Plane scope over a First Focal so the Reticle stays small on the target as it zooms in. Not too mention field of view is decreased as magnification is greater. Hard to get on the next target in "rapid extermination" situations. :)

I love Manufacturing processes. Sorting it out to get the right outcome is what we do. We do this process on a number of different parts. Most are Punch then Laser and sometime back to the punch again. Or Laser then punch. It is a systematic approach to meeting the customers specifications. I am surprise more people here don't have bald spots on their head from scratching.

We had a great time Mike. We were only 145 miles north east of you when you were out there on vacation.

Can't wait to try out the Sled. First "Trail" Sled I have owned since 1992.

Looks like MN has it's first winter storm rolling in the weekend. Yes I am crazy and yes I am looking forward to it. Bad part is it will not stick around very long.

Shooting this late in the year we found the Dog Towns have seen a lot of pressure from shooters and the Dogs get smart and stay down. So we average around 10 Dogs an hour on very selective shots. Rarely do you get a Dog under 100 yards unless you get lucky and find a Dog Town that has not seen very many shooters. So a 17HMR (an awesome platform) doesn't do as well as the heavier rounds 22-250, 223 and 204.

My Shooting Partner uses a Push Button Counter. Since we are using Bolt Action Rifles without Magazines it is really easy to just hit the buttons as you load the next bullet. Then at the end of the day just add up the spent rounds and you can get your average. We keep all our Brass and have a system to identify the empty Boxes and partial Boxes. Me I keep track in my head...next year I'll add a counter to the system.

My Shooting Partner and I have been to a number of different Shooting Schools and learned to communicate very well together as Shooter and Spotter (switching roles on the fly) increasing our confirmed kills to shots fired. For us it all about precision.

25% of the time we shoot together and the rest we separate. We don't use shooting tables and practice stealth in our program usually picking higher ground with light cover and a good shooting lane. We establish our Field of Fire and do some ranging and wind corrections to determine holds to apply DOPE. This year we added a little camouflage to mix. It help but we each still wear an Orange Hat most of the time.

We always know where each other is at. In most areas there is no worry about what is beyond the target but we have had a few shoots where we are cleaning up P-Dogs in Feeder Lots and near Ranches (homes, barns and equipment). This takes discipline and thinking through the shots. Most of these are Organic Beef operations where they like to see credentials prior to allowing one to shoot.

A few years ago I took a buddy who is into Video and he followed me around an Organic Beef Ranch where the Rancher ran an add for "Credentialed" Shooters. I applied and got on. The fence line in the Video is 220 yards from our position.

This picture made me laugh. Back in the day the Race Crew were off limits from my Master Drill Set. Most of them could never figure out Chip Load, Feed and Speed when drilling. Made for a lot of dull and burnt up bits!!!

Pat, do you have any resources you could point a guy towards to learn more about these parameters consider when drilling? Didn't even know I didn't know about such a thing, if the drill bit doesn't go in I just push harder! :dunno:

Mike, same question for you - any direction you could point me in to learn the proper technique and equipment needed to sharpen drill bits? I remember my Grandpa always sharpening his bits, but by the time I got old enough to see the value of it he was well past the point of puttering in his garage any more.

Otherwise I'll just be a typical millennial and google it!

Thank you!

Kyle

Not trying to interject, but a fantastic resource that covers both of these topics (and pretty much everything related to machining) is the Machinery's Handbook. The newest version (30) is ~$80 on Amazon, but I wouldn't hesitate to pick up an earlier version like 28 or 29 on the used market to save some money (I found used paperback versions of 28 on Amazon for $30, hardcover is $50). I have 27 from "back in the day" and don't think that I'm missing out on much by not having the latest version. It has a sections that cover bit sharpening and calculating feeds and speeds, along with tables that cover pretty much any material you can think of.

YouTube is also a great resource on these topics if you are more a visual learner. This Old Tony has a great video on hand sharpening drill bits:
