Well I have been busy lately, but still hitting those fleas! I have found a few good deals. Even got some of the rare stuff I had been watching on the bay.

Heres a start some new Plomb additions
2404 long punch set I was happy to win!
Another weed puller in a little rougher shape than the last one
old 1/4 ratchet a guy had saved a month just for me!
Pebble DBE
Set of Crowsfeet
small DOE
my very firsrt in the wild 1 dollar paschall hammer!
Also got a rubber mallet of the bay in great shape!
Nice Plomb haul. I picked up that exact same tapered punch set earlier this year in a Plomb Leatherette.

Looking for the following Plomb Pebbles Wrench 3061

Miller72, does that Rock Island No390 combination vise have the patent date cast into the side? I saw one a couple times this summer that had no markings on it; assumed it was later production.

Small item from Sunday estate sale. It was the last day of the sale and the garage and tools were picked over pretty well but there was an old Kennedy roll cab that still had a couple of drawers worth of random dirty/rusty tools.

I was picking out the rusty DOE wrenches and all the USA made items I could find and making a pile to go with a tray of things from a different part of the garage (including that alcohol powered torch I posted earlier)

Then found this sweet little Craftsman 3/8 complete set of VV sockets in the original holder. I know it's not that special but I like it, and more importantly needed the set. Consecutive numbers 44331-44338 sizes 3/8 to 13/16.

The other rusty tools might be interesting but they are soaking in Evapo-Rust for now. Paid $11 for everything, at least 40 made in usa wrenches, shears, and other odds and ends. Including the german nick-nack I posted here. Plus this set and the Lenk alcohol torch.

WTF,O? The last post in this thread, which was mine, is from yesterday. It's one thing to have to do the dreaded two posts in a row, it's another when they are separated by 24 hours!

Today's flea finds...

An antique tiny Eagle oiler, a pair of box joint jewelers' pliers with a little striking surface and some pronounced gripping curvature on the handles, and the first Botnick I have ever seen in the wild! If you don't know the story, which is very cool, search on "Botnick" or "B.M.C." (for Botnick Motor Corporation) on the Vintage Board, or wait until later. When I get home and post close-ups on a Botnick related thread I will post the link here.

Thanks, 3bay! I thought so. I've seen plenty of them before (as I know you have!), but usually at tables asking antique store prices. These were in a cardboard box on a Everything $1 table. And it turned into a threefer 'cuz I had the 76 at home. I posted close-ups - and a whole mess of research that having three of them prompted - at the end of 4.c's 'Keystone' thread, linked here for convenience.

Nice estate sale this morning. Bunch of Snap-on 3/4dr stuff: 2 ratchet heads, bar, 8 sockets and some adapters. Blue Point DOE's. A Cornwell 1/2dr breaker bar with 90 degree end. Proto puller and a bunch of loose Snap-on sockets, including some oddball 1/4dr Deep speciality sockets.

Scored a Wilton baby bullet for $10! It is not as nice as my others but should clean up with some work. I'll post more pics of it and my other estate sale finds later.

The rest of the estate sale haul today. Including the baby Wilton I spent $82.

Pic 1: Columbian D43 1/2 vise.
Pic 2: Axes and hatchets, the lower right axe head is Craftsman, the rest I have found no markings so far.
Pic 3: Greenlee draw knife, large chisel and gouge heads, hammer with the nail holder in the head, large mallet with plastic head inserts.
Pic 4: 5 plastic pallets, don't tell the post office LOL.
Pic 5: Craftsman sanding disc, limb saw, socket holders, 1950s ratchet, 1/4D spinner and socket and 1 of my favorite finds, 4 clutch head screwdrivers. In the upper right are a Mac distributor wrench and 1/4d flex socket and a Plomb extension.

...speaking of rust, I checked out this cool book from my library. I wasn’t looking for it, it was just on a display shelf. Must have some cool librarians. Random that someone actually wrote a book on the topic. Even weirder that someone would actually want to read it. I am weird that way.

8f2e26ba040bced07c875cee3ce6419f.jpg

I found this book in the public library shortly after seeing this post, and finished reading it last night. Not a fan of Waldman’s list-intensive writing style, particularly in the first pages, but enjoyed it overall. Statue of Liberty, Bethlehem Steel...I remember hearing him read part of the Can School chapter on NPR. (My beer comes in a Ball can!)
He achieves some genuine suspense in the TAP-pigging chapter.
And I found and watched the first LeVar video mentioned in the Daniel J Dunmire chapter. Did not find the Dunmire podcasts, though. DoD website not particularly helpful.

I happened to check Craigslist at lunchtime and spotted a yard sale a few blocks away in Berkeley. If you remember the Bob Newhart show, this sale was put on by Larry’s brother Daryl and his other brother Daryl. When I arrived there was no one to be seen and no signage. There was a huge old motor home parked in front of the boarded up house. I spoke to the area of the door of the motor home and a voice from inside responded. I said I was there for the yard sale and the voice replied “what are you looking for?”. I replied tools and the voice said give me a minute. Several minutes later the gentleman emerged. We poked around the yard and garage and I found a nice S-K Metric flare nut wrench and an unusual rusty sliding square. He said that his brother had a toolbox in his truck but the brother was gone to Home Depot. I left and did my errands and went back an hour later and the brother had returned. He pulled this Craftsman set out of the truck and I suggested a low price which he immediately accepted. As far as I could tell I was the only customer that had shown up. I probably will have enough spares to complete the set.

Finally got a bunch of wrenches cleaned up from buying a couple of groups of rusty, greasy, toolbox finds.

Washed them with dish soap to remove grime and then the rusty ones wen in Evaporust overnight. Still a lot of scrubbing to remove the resultant black film that Evaporust leaves on everything.

Please take a look and let me know if there is anything interesting.

There are two groups with kind of generic marks I don't know the brand. In the Combo wrenches a group marked simply "SELECT STEEL" and in the DOE group there are some only marked "DROP FORGED".

Quite a variety, everything is marked USA except a couple of JAPAN wrenches.

Total dollars spent on the wrenches was less than $20 but hours of labor and probably $20 of supplies for the cleanup to get them to this point.

These didn't fit in the first post, some older stuff and I guess the Zenith set was ignition wrenches?

The curved wrench says Manifold & Starter on it and most of the other wrenches look to have motor company names, I see Triumph and Yamaha but not sure about some of the others.

What was the deal with the Auto-Kit No.100? was the hole in the middle to attach it to other wrenches in a repair kit?

Damon18, Those "auto kit" Spanners look nice. I don't think I've seen combination Spanners where the ring is incorporated INTO the handle, rather than being a flared out ring at the end

Drop Forged Made in USA look to be Lectrolite
Select Steel are Indestro
The Auto Kit style wrenches have the hole in the middle to keep the set together with a screw and nut (sometimes wingnut).
Bon-E-Con is a Bonney price line
Controlled Steel is Danielson
None Better is a New Britain brand
The Manifold Starter wrench looks like unmarked Barcalo to me
I think that the X wrench is New Britain
The HM in an oval is Honda
That should get you started. Nice batch of vintage tools.

Heehee.

The size field on the face of the jaw on the JP Danielson made Auto-Kit wrenches is commonly called the "batman" marking among collectors. One look will tell you why. We have a thread on them and their cousins on the Vintage Board if you're interested in seeing more examples and finding out more about them. Indestro also made them. EDIT: In fact, two of damon's three Auto-Kit style wrenches are Indestro, the other is JPD. Link here.

A two-photo haul from my Friday flea market!

Pic 1: Top to bottom, left to right…

attachment.php

- The WWI bacon can is for the next time I run into a first generation Herbrand socket set. (Only twertsy, who doesn’t post in this thread, Provincial, and maybe a handful of other GJ’ers will get that inside joke, so here is a link! )

- Brown fiber fuze pullers grow on trees, but when I saw these red ones with finger holes I had to stop and look. Glad I did. Sun Electric Company. I am not a Sun Worshipper, but they are out there! I will be flipping.

- No markings on the cast iron spring clamp. I am going to use that.

- No markings on the offset DBE hex wrench.

- The double alligator is a Forsythe with one of my all-time favorite logos – quite literally a numeral “4” intertwined with a scythe! This is my second one. More flippety-flip material.

- The brace bits are both BELL SYSTEM B. The flat head screwdriver bit is IRWIN, the square socket is A.W. MACK Mfg Co Poughkeepsie, NY.

- The hugeass hex throated 22-1/2* angle DOE wrench is a Vlchek.

- The push drill is Goodell-Pratt. Complete with bits.

Pic 2: Left to right, top to bottom...

attachment.php

- The iron garden stepping stone frog is for the CINC HOUSE. (Say it with me fellas, “Happy wife, happy…”)

- The meter is a gas tester. Davis Emergency Equipment Corp in Newark NJ was a massive WWII supplier. Everything from FAK’s to gas masks. The box is two compartments. Electronics in top half, text chamber in the bottom half. There is an input line into the bottom half. A steel plate from the electronic component in the top sits just a hair over a black chemical plate in the bottom. The scale (SAFE - DANGEROUS – EXPLOSIVE) is in voltage. Looks like Weston supplied Davis the electronics. I’ll have to put my thinking cap on to figure this one out. But I am pretty sure it’s military (finish is OD green) and I am hoping it’s WWII.

- The marking on the wood-handled screw-wrench is Collins & Co (I think, partially worn), late 1800’s. Gotta study it more.

- The other one is “(BRITISH MADE)” – probably Abingdon (maker of “KING ****” tools), which ripped off Billings’ US 1884 patent in England in 1888.

- The little black box is empty, but it’s for an L.S. Starrett test indicator. I liked the “LAST WORD” marketing on the lid.

The Manifold Starter wrench looks like unmarked Barcalo to me
I think that the X wrench is New Britain
The HM in an oval is Honda
That should get you started. Nice batch of vintage tools.
-Don

two of damon's three Auto-Kit style wrenches are Indestro, the other is JPD. Link here.

Thanks for the info! I think the old car/motorcycle brand wrenches are cool, would those have been included in the repair kit or were they just branded and sold by dealers?

More from the batch of tools I cleaned up. Nice heavy pair of shears labeled "Pine Knot 15 PK" they cleaned up very nice and cut everything from paper to heavy plastic. Used them to open one of the indestructible plastic containers that Harbor Freight wire brushes come in, went through like butter.

The red handled needle nose is marked Sears 3077 on one side and has the marks "F DF JAPAN" on the other. Seems really nice quality.

Can't make out any marks on the side cutters but they have a nice feel and good cutting surface, maybe someone will recognize the style/brand?

What is the red handled forky thing?

Just to show how much **** I had to sort through to find some good stuff, I've included a picture of the leftover reject Chineesium tools. Although I'll keep the orange Harbor Freight chisels, sometimes you need a disposable piece of steel to whale on.

I think they were aftermarket. I am partial to them myself... :)

Nice collection!

I really meant the Triumph, Yamaha, Honda etc. DOE wrenches that don't have the holes in the middle. Were those all motorcycle wrenches? How about the Yamaha slip joint pliers? How old are the tools in this group?

Also since I'm on a roll, these nearly unmarked wrenches got lost in the earlier group, here are better pictures, any way to identify them?

The top one (27) has the remains of a Williams logo on one end but the others nothing.

Scored a Wilton baby bullet for $10! It is not as nice as my others but should clean up with some work. I'll post more pics of it and my other estate sale finds later.

Another unicorn found. I can't wait until I actually see one in person. I have a fantasy about going to a sale and finding a small wooden box with a nos baby wilton and pow-r-ram base still covered in cosmoline in it. Priced at $5. :bounce:

One day some version of that will happen....I hope I live long enough.:lol_hitti

Since the official navigator gave the okay, I scheduled several sales to celebrate my birthday. The first sale was sparse but I overpaid for a really rusty partial Craftsman set on the chance that the other sales would be unproductive. I needn’t have worried. The next sale was put on by an estate sale company known to be expensive but today was a very reasonable day and included a Wizard ratchet. The last sale of the day was the best with many unusual tools. Here are some pictures in order of the sales. The fifth picture is PowrKraft-Kraft, the sixth is Thorsen and the last picture is tools from the Plomb/Proto empire including two SR sockets. The tray turned out to be for one of the rare boxes larger than a GMTK box

Happy Birthday Don!

And now back to our regular programming. I went to a farm estate sale, which looked good from the pics, but it was only OK by the time I got there, one hour after it started. In any case, I found a few things:

Simpson 260 manual and an Uglys guide, Williams breaker bar, a cute little homemade tray with US sockets -the front is all Snap-on from the '20s and '50s SK, SK ratchet (I picked it up at a thrift store on my way home $2), Proto/Plomb dual marked long pattern wrench, Cornwell driver, 2 tip cleaners, Lufkin 4R rule, Misc tooling, WWII Snap-on and SK 1/4 extension and T-handle, adjustable reamer, machinists driver, lock-out tag, and a neat little IBM angle adjuster. $10 for everything but the SK ratchet.

Wednesday I checked out a new thrift store in town. I found the items in Photo #1:

Proto Los Angeles 5444 1/2 drive drag link socket
P&C 3/8 drive 5/8 12-point
P&C 1/2 drive 5/8 12-point deep
P&C 1/2 drive 13/16 12-point deep
File handle (new condition)
Air Chuck (new)
Shavivi deburring tool (new condition)

Today I started out with two duds, with nothing but junky yard tools. The third sale was an estate at a small farm that had a pole building with lots of tools. I found the items in Photo #2:

Duro Ignition set in a leatherette rool with many extras
Williams S-52 ratchet
Williams 4" superadjustable
Plomb USA 5449 1/2 inch round-handle ratchet date code "DC"
Plomb USA 1226 13/16 combo
Plomb USA 1214 7/16 combo
P&C 1/2 combo
P&C 3/8 combo
Mastercraft hacksaw

After another couple of duds, I stopped at the Restore where I bought the items in Photo #3:

12" x 1/2"diameter Aluminum rod
Walden Spintite 3/8
1/2" tube brush
Powr-Kraft 84W4760 1/4 drive spinner
Sargent 4-1/2" punch/rivet (grommet) tool
CRC Carburetor Cleaner (new)

So here's the $10 Wilton baby bullet after a basic cleaning and disassembly for inspection. This has the latest slide key date in ever recall seeing on a baby bullet of February 1987. I wonder how much of this was damage by a previous owner and how much was poor quality castings.

Pic 1: After a basic cleaning this vise looks decent but look closer! Notice on the dynamic jaw there is a small hole on the front where the jaw insert screw was either drilled too deep or that area was ground down some exposing the bottom of the screw hole. Also the end cap is missing.
Pic 2: The slide key with 2 87 date code.
Pic 3: The jaw inserts look good but notice the static jaw insert ledge is broken and rough.
Pic 4: The static jaw tower has a chip partially exposing the jaw insert screw.
Pic 5: The swivel pieces are in good shape but the swivel locks were replaced by bolts.
Pic 6: Just to the right of the Wilton lettering you can see the the arrowhead marking for the Blackhawk Foundry in Davenport Iowa.
Pic 7: Another picture showing the missing area of the jaw insert support ledge.
