Won an auction for a big ole swivel jaw Prentiss No 6. Gotta go pick it up tomorrow. Hoping she is well cared for and doesn't need too much metal work!

Guy at my work: “Hey you’re into tools and stuff right? There’s an old vise on a workbench in my basement that has been there since I bought my house ** years ago... would you ever want it?”

Me: “Does a pregnant nun sweat at confession?”

He said he didn’t know anything about it, but I figured anything free was worth saving up for! The next day he dropped this little guy off at my desk:

Torco 40 by Wilton (Chicago 14)
- 4” jaws are in immaculate shape
- Pipe jaws present
-Someone crudely painted it red, but that’s chipping and peeling. Looks like original light greenish-grey paint underneath.
- not a spec of rust, should be a pretty easy clean up.

Doesn’t beat my last freebie (Chas Parker 976), but for free, I’m ******* it as a win.

Same for me. Only a M&W Zeus 3 VS4 (what else ;).. but since I am not living at the swiss border where somebody sold one for 25, I paid considerably more. Photos looking good, though, not a like the other two still availble for even more euros. Now I need that VS2, too ;)

Is there anyway I could get the dimensions on that swivel base of that torco. I see them pop up and it’s always made me wonder if the bases are the same size as the Wilton 825 vises.

Thank you for the measuring and pictures. Just like I suspected I’m 90% sure that base would fit a 825 Wilton vise. I just checked your measurements to my 825 base and they seem spot on.

My swivel bases for the 825 are smaller than that base.

Notice that on my Wilton 400s one of the pin holes on the end piece (the inner piece) is busted strange though both pins are straight. What is the preferred method of fixing this... Preheat weld and re-drill or is it just best to replace? Thanks1 Pretty sure this has most likely been asked before but I tried searching but came up empty. Thanks

I've built a couple of 825 swivel bases, here is my sketch, the numbers match my two 825's. The important number is 3-1/2 center to center for the swivel locks and the 4-1/2 (4.491) dimension that matches the base of the Static.

Well now that the Ebay auction is over I can post about this.

I spotted this little Rock Island paperweight / salesman's sample right after posted and I've been watching til the end. Even with no size reference to go off of in the auction pics, I knew what it was due to catching a glimpse of one in another GJ members pics of his small vise collection (saved pic attached, sorry can't remember who).

I obviously wasn't the only one who knew what it was because the were 10 bidders and it went a bit crazy. I did not bid as I haven't even spent over $100 on any real vise I've got so I certainly couldn't justify the $$.

Was anyone here a bidder or even the lucky new owner. 4e18a8e6295f8f31bb5e3cf47d85cb1b.jpgdbe6491e4ae1ac1f4afcfa2730dcd37d.jpg

Does VISEs post anymore? Is he still around?
I don't see him post here very often but I recently saved this pic. I believe this is in his new warehouse once he got all the vises out of the metal bins and organized on these new shelves.

And then just for fun because it's a frickin Hollands 29 is a pic of Andrew's Hollands 29!8acc3f97bee3c5b928e826e2f29a7dce.jpg496af2e906bdd5c52364e50056781154.jpg

Very cool wall of viseseseses!

I don't know if I see any pattern or organizational method on the shelves other then the bit mama's being on top. Hold on tight though, cuz if he ever liquidated the vise market will crash. Just think, vises for pennies on the pound!

For anyone who hasn't already seen it, watch this video tour of Andrew's warehouse. There is so much awesomeness it's ridiculous! He's got most of the anvils and cool old machinery set up but most of the vises in the video are still just piled in bins. The pic of the "vise wall" was certainly taken after.

Several novice questions, please bear with me:

1)Were Wilton bullet vises with the 8 inch jaws marked 800N or 800S in the casting? Saw an OLD looking one that just has 800 cast no S or N?

2)What is the oldest a Wilton 8 inch jaw 800 can be that has Shiller Park cast on the side?

3) What are factory colors used on an 8 inch jaw 800?

4)Who has a decent end cap for 8 inch jaw 800 Wilton they would sell?

5) Who has a swivel base for an 8 inch jaw 800 they would sell?

Thank you so much!

Don't see to many of those, look forward to seeing it and adding it to the Spreadsheet.

Here is the "this is how she looked when I bought her" pic. 7" jaws, and when I posted a pic in the FB group a member suggested it was a Prentiss No 6. There is a spreadsheet floating around that suggests it weighs 184lbs. I doubt that weight claim but I will have to put this big ******* a scale to see.

More pics to follow as the restoration moves forward.

Has anyone bought a new swivel vise base from Wilton? If so were you pleased with the quality/casting of it? Anyone has a photo of a new one? Especially one for an 800?

Badass vise, congrats. The weight sounds about right for a 7". I know the Prentiss 23 is around 210#.

I put her on the scale and she weighed in at 151lbs. Something wasn't adding up so I gave her a good washing. Turns out some idiot welded/brazed 7" Jaws on a No 5 Prentiss.
