Hello, I am in the planning/execution stage of a 40x60x16 shop. There will be 3 14x14 doors on the eve side, so effectively I will have 3 20' bays.
I like the 110w LED high bays I've seen recommended and have a few questions.

On layout, I've read and read and read.

What makes the most sense? 3x4, 4x4, 4x5?

I will be using the shop for mostly automotive work, rebuilding transmissions/engines and anything in between. This is just for personal use too, on all of my own junk and some of my racing buddies.

All input and advice is much appreciated.

Hi,

My shop is 60x80x16 with 3 12x12 doors

I used the software the folks here on the forums recommended to get a idea about placement. To me the question comes down to how much light do you want and where do you want it focused. You know what what you want to do in your shop so you can look up on line how many lumens is suggested for the kind of stuff you will be doing. I picked around 85 to 90 lumens as the ballpark for me.

I can not post pictures yet because I've lurked here and never posted :)

I'll post a few things I ran into along the way trying to get my lighting figured out. The lumens chart is pretty easy to find on google image. I had a hard time deciding how much was enough light. I went more than I thought I needed and went dimmable LED.

I wanted to possibly put a lift in later on so I had to think about how close the light might be to the roof of something I'm working on. The LEDs I have get a little warm but nothing I'd worry to much about. I placed my lights to the side of the lift position to help throw light under and eliminate hitting them if I'd have something tall on the lift.

I check all my lights before I installed them and pulled a amp check to make sure they all were in the advertised range. The company that makes them should have a spec sheet listing stuff like weight and amp draw.

I got lights from James Electric all but 8 lights were 2x2 110W and I used 225W 4x2 for the other 8 lights. the 110W were about 2.3 amps a piece I believe and the 225W were around 3 amps. I checked the dimmer out by shorting out the 2 wires marked for the dimmer. The 2x2 lights went out completely the 4x2 lights went down to what I'd consider 20% output. The lights weighted between 25 to 30 pounds a piece something that might be a consideration for you

Here is my final cad layout after I finished installing all the lights. I used this to set the spacing recommended by the software. The basic lighting layout software helped get my grid for however many lumens I asked for. Something to consider if you have trusses is moving your lights back from them to make sure you get the all the light you can from your fixture. I moved my second to last row forward and a front row back some. You can see the spacing is about 13ft in between about 7ft off the front and back walls.
I made the call about the placement around the garage door framing.I wanted plenty of light up front and down the middle so the I added the 4 extras down the centerline after I had set everything up on paper.

I have 4 lighting zones on different dimmers and switches first switch by the panels is the outside lights.

This what the dialux software looked like after I added everything I can't be sure I calculated everything correctly but the results put me at about what I tried to get.

And finally this is the final product it was not cost effective but I think it will be fine for me for the long haul.

Hope this helps in some way :)

Just be aware that when you buy $60 fixtures, they use the cheapest diodes and drivers that they can find. There is zero quality built into these fixtures because they simply cant afford to build them that way. These are made by Dong Guang Electronics, a company that no one has heard of, has no track record, and has no way for you to contact them if there's a problem.

4x6. 8 per bay. Minimal shadowing.

60x40x16 - 3 14x14 doors, they're at the ends. Hell, we even have the same porch.
I'm largely using 5 high powered "UFO style" LED lights. They work amazing. I've got secondary rope lighting because the damn things pretty much make it daylight in there.
For your case, I'd do 6 of them. Cost: about $700.

I’ve got recommendations from 5 to 24 lights? Anyone else?

Thank you all in advance for your help.

Thank you Platonic, based on that I should go with a 4x5 layout with the additional 12'.

Now to decide if I should risk it with the $60 110w LED's from LED Lighting Wholesale or the $83 Greentek's that have a few decent reviews.

I appreciate everyone's time.

From experience of putting lights up in a building with 16' eves, where I have to rent equipment... I want DARN RELIABLE lighting. Just the cost of a lift to install (or change) lights like you're considering - it's probably $200 a day... Factor that in.

I also installed "normal plugs" in the ceiling for all lighting, so when lighting tech changes, I can easily swap.

Congrats on your shop.

This is what I used LINK - at least for "main" lights.

Platonic put some work into his lighting -- and post.
