I have a IR garage mate air compressor that wont fill all the way. It stops running at around 75 pounds and trips the breaker. If I drain the tank it will run fine until it hits that point. Ive done a search and haven't found a lot of info.

I was using it to run a roofing nailer with a 10 gauge extension cord it worked fine for a while then would only work plugged into the outlet. now it doesn't pressure it to 75 before it trips the breaker on the machine.

I've been rolling it around the yard a bit so I'm going to check the belt tension but any advice on what else to check.

I had to go rent a pancake compressor to finish the job.

I hate it when things don't work right.

is there a rounded off case that is attached to the motor. inside there is a start capacitor & maybe a run capacitor. watch this video , and be careful to discharge it before touching it

This will sound crazy but check your belt tension. A loose belt will start to stall and catch, stall and catch. That causes multiple a succession of surges and can trip a breaker.

It’s weird it will start and run fine until 30 or 40 lbs then kick the breaker on the machine not the circuit breaker. I watched the vids about the run capacitor it may be that, I took it apart and it looks like the wires are epoxied directly to it with no serviceable connections.

not sure that that cap is on there for, you would cut the leads off and then test. re attache the leads. there's no polarity with these capacitors

How do I discharge it beforehand? Just cut both the wires then discharge by grounding it out?

OK! Messed with it a bit today as I had the day off. Took the capacitors to a electric engine place and they both tested good. pulled out the check valve and cleaned and replaced it. CAlled IR and talked to a tech and he had me run a few tests and still the same.

FINALLY I pulled out the 15 amp reset switch and went to Grainger and bought a new one for $2.69. and NOW it runs just like new.

Go figure.

Thanks for the help Mr. Cobbler.
