Nice pickup on the C0. I almost messaged you about it the other day when I saw it because I knew it was the last piece of your Wilton combination vise collection. I didn't because I figured you had probably seen it already. I'm glad you got it.

I might want to find a C0 someday. I've got a really nice Parker 433 1/2A and a late model Reed 1C. I've thought several times it'd be cool to collect the 3.5" combo vise from each manufacturer to be able to display them for comparison. Right now Mathew over on the FB page has got a beautifully restored Columbian 203 1/2 and I know where there is (maybe was) a really clean Athol 323 1/2 for under $100. When I saw that C0 the other day it got my wheels turning!6f4a782177743f54218eba7fd8382495.jpge38636ff1cf3f69706027eba0da4ecc7.jpg507c13b8ccdc79805902e16f5546be27.jpg

Thanks Chris. They were high on price so it took a couple of days to bring them back to reality.

I finally got around to finishing an American Scale No. 79 6” double swivelling vise I acquired a few years back. Internet says weighs around 190 lbs.

I know it only Monday but I’m already planning on getting hammered this weekend.f339712d68291fa060c6416ad84895d7.jpg

Smitty: Is this the color that actually looks more green than blue? Can't wait to see it. Again probably. Who'd you buy that case from and how much were the damages?

454, here's a pic of a similar vise as the Armstrong.---Google says it's a Columbian but everything points to Armstrong IMO.---Also has the plunger Dynamic lock instead of the ratchet lock on yours.

Here's a side by side comparison.

Hit this link and scroll down half page.

Thanks VA, there's something weird going on on that page. I don't think whoever posted that thinks it's a Columbian. When you click on the pic it takes you to a different Columbian vise, strange. :headscrat

While it does have some Parker type features, I don't think it's a Parker. Side of the slide and shape of the swivel base are all wrong. Oh, and welcome to GJ and the vise mega thread.

Welcome back to the vise pages. Good to see you posting more regularly again.
I’m still thinking about the 275 gallon tote of Evaporust you mentioned. Saw the top off, position a hoist, and use it for a dunk tank. :)

That AS79 and stand came out great! And needless to say, those new jaws by Kevin are the icing on the cake.

I get the Hammerite paint from an automotive paint store. I pay $10 paper can but I’m stocking up because it’s really getting hard to find.fd57cba0b35ff1564665d347af0f0f65.jpg

Is that the Rust-oleum Hammered light blue on the right that you just bought a case of? I really like that color.

The Rustoleum Hammered Light Blue is on the left, Hammered Verde Green on the left.

The light blue does come out very "silvery". I haven't used the Verde Green yet but awhile back I bought a case of the light blue and I wish I had gotten the Verde Green instead.

This is the light Blue on an Athol I recently finished.18fe0325d62a69071394e119dda4742c.jpg

I just finished up restoring my grandpa Clem’s vice - Rock Island No 579. I’ve had it for about 5 years and this thread inspired me to freshen it up.

Standup, wow you did an amazing job on that RI. It looks to be in extremely good condition as well. I am sure your grandpa would be proud. Is this your first vise refurbishment?

Very nice work on freshening up you grandpa's vise!

Only question is how wide are the jaws? Rock Island made the 57x series in 3" through 6" jaw widths with model numbers 571 through 577. If your jaws are 4" wide it would actually be a 573. Got a close up pic of the model number designation?

Chrisnazzy: I recently finished my Athol 323 1/2 project, painted exactly like your Parker. Pipe jaws still in process tho.

Thank you both!! This is my first vise refurbishment. I am shocked at how simple these useful tools are. Makes me want to do another one. I never met my Grandpa, but from what I am told is he quite the craftsman and this was a prized possession of his. I thought the same thing about passing this along to my grandkids!

Thank you! WOW, nice catch you are totally right the vise is a 573. I had to look closer but the 9 is a 3. It's a 4" jaw with 6" opening.

Rustoleum Sage. Its greener than it looks in that pic.

I'll also be posting some more pics of a Hollands 93 Offset Carriage Maker style that I finished recently too.

(New member; my first GJ posting). I was pretty surprised to see my new vise shown on the forum! Thanks DaveThorik. I bought this repaired Offset Holland's for $100 from CL posting. 5" smooth jaws and opens 9". The guy had purchased it over the weekend at a blacksmith show in Dayton OH but didn't know it was repaired until after. He called it a Sheet Metal Vise, but I think maybe woodworking? Works smooth, jaws are square, repair on dynamic jaw is nearly invisible except from the bottom. Will plan on strip & repaint.

I meant to post these pics in follow-up to the message from a few weeks ago by DaveThorik. Hollands 93 Offset Carriage Maker is finished. Jaws are 4.5".

Since i'm on a roll posting pics, 3 other recent refurbs: In the first picture: Parker 973 with a replacement bronze front collar. It came to me with that replacement part. The other is a Grand Master Quikcet with the really unusual triangular slide for the dynamic jaw. The quick release trigger (underneath) works really well. Second picture is my first vise project a 1970 Wilton Cadet with new jaws.

Eric,
I think that vise is one of the most handsome vises ever made and the colors you chose are spot on, to my eye.
Well done

Mike, pretty sure that is 234A, have a catalog cut showing a 234, that matches other than a round "meatball" instead of a cylindrical one as shown. BRB

On further research, I think it is 994A Parker Big Bear

While I’m not a big fan of exposed screws, this 3.5” Wards Master Quality anvil vise followed me home from an antiques’ arcade. It’s smooth, solid and heavy. Good old USA iron. I tried to leave it on the floor and walk away but it kept luring me back.

Edit: This is the vise featured in the 1941 Montgomery Ward catalog:

It cleaned up well:

Wrench guy if you get a chance to pick it up they are pretty sought after by Parker collectors. Mostly only the stationary base ones show up. a lot of those show up have been broken or repaired from the years of abuse.

I found this old wards vise at Rust brothers antique store in Coarse Gold California. The cross peen hammer was icing on the cake. 6f02f7397bdbf92f4f90b3bf0fd091cc.jpgbb31b2641647eb4e87eb2515a961e2b7.jpg7b76e494ce31962adc60eaad984f2eca.jpg

I really like the vise but the Provenance is the best part of the story.

Hello everyone! Bought an old vise, can't tell. We have in Russia such not issued. They look like Parker, but how did Parker end up in Tver?

Alex--

Whether or not it is a Parker, it looks like a nice find. Welcome to the Garage Journal! I used to fly into Klin, just 70km south from you, when I was with the Open Skies Treaty. I hope you stay warm for the winter!!

Eric - that Hollands offset vise is a stunner. Great work on the restore. What color paint is that?
