Smitty - great pickups on the Wilton's; they look in excellent shape! I do enjoy the small group of Reed pipe vises that have gathered in my basement

It’s an old Reed, I know they’re not very collectible but the price was right.

Quite handy to have a large pipe vice around though sometimes, even if you aren't threading pipe, much more common and cheap than a combination vice (you almost never see them in the UK).

Product bob: a few thoughts on your basement shelf pics
-how did you find so many Reed vises?
-why is the Reed shelf on the bottom?
-what happened to your 100 lb rule?
-the painted vises seem out of place (blo fan)
-I saved the pic to files, nice work

Anybody seen that baby 2” Prentiss on the Bay? Thoughts as to which model? See ‘em come around much? It’s my first one to see but I am a newb.

This one? I’d say probably around one or two a month on average. Prentiss made like 6 different models of the jewelers vise and for many years. The 2in swivel jaw model does seem to be the least common but it seems they show up from time to time.

Smitty - would like to say it's uncanny vise hunting skills but ...Erie, PA isn't that far away so Reed's are the most common vise found around here.
-They're on the bottom because none of those have been 'refreshed' yet. The top 2 shelves have all been worked on and are ready to go to work if needed.
-100 lb rule is still in place- anything over that weight comes downstairs in two or more pieces and put back together. Gonna try and get 6 or 7 of the 130+lb's moved to a shelf next week (shelves are rated for 2000# so should work) If the shelf and my back hold up will post new pics. lol
-about the paint- all the painted vises but the orange Reed had some version of the current color on it when I got it. Lean toward BLO or straight clear coat too but every once in a while I just have to put some color on (TriJeff is my inspiration!).
-thanks

Let me know if you have any correspondence with the seller. I've emailed that seller before, asking questions about items for sale on multiple occasions with no response. :headscrat

I’ve talked to this vendor before. They’re full price plus 20% and they double shipping costs. I’m surprised they put this vise out to bid.

Thanks all for the info. Dave, I have not talked to the vendor and am not feeling great about this now, but we will see how it plays out. Appreciate the $$ reference with the one that did sell - gives me something to go off of. Would pair nicely with my 98, but ouch!

Interesting, smitty. The last time was 2 years ago about some machinist tools, no response. Maybe if I ask about the big ticket items (like vises) I'll get a reply.

The seller is kinda local to me, seems like they get a lot of vises and machinist tools, but yes prices are kinda high.

How are you guys shipping medium sized vises (4-5")? I think it may be time to start thinning the herd.

Just to keep on topic, here is a nice one I picked up last year:

I purchased some 24" x 12" x 12" double walled boxes.
https://www.uline.com/Product/Detail/S-4843/Corrugated-Boxes-Heavy-Duty/24-x-12-x-12-275-lb-Double-Wall-Corrugated-Boxes About $4.60 each after shipping costs. I cut a piece of 3/4" ply for the bottom and bolt the vise to it. I have used 2" thick insulation board cut to fit and / or some of the dense packing stuff that TV's and electronics ship with. Keep in mind UPS extra weight shipping charges. Over 80lbs it is $40 extra handling fee. I have had it cost $100 ship a vise. I have a reinforced gummed tape dispenser machine, best investment for shipping ever!

I add 12 to 15lbs for the shipping material for UPS quote.

Also if real heavy you can ship the same way but in 2 boxes.

And if you get into the biggin's, build a pallet and crate and use Fastenal store to store

Thanks for the link for the boxes. That is a good price. Is UPS your preferred shipper? I have never shipped anything this heavy by UPS.

I have an account with UPS so I get 15% or so off and the UPS store is easy to drop off to. I found FedEx is a little cheaper but a pain place for me to drop off.

it's been pouring all day here so started working in the basement and one thing led to another...... ended up moving some vises around and filled a shelf with some 6"er's without damage to the basement or my self :D

They look great Bob! What’s the weight capacity on those shelves? I ended up picking up a giant industrial rack because I couldn’t find any small ones with the right capacity. Very nice collection!

TOTO, Vise and Smitty- thanks guys, it's an enjoyable hobby. Have a couple more that are in the clean up process that can go on the bottom shelf at some point. Each shelf is rated for 2000# but going to stay under 1500# (just in case the manufacturer is bad at math). the back end of the bigger ones look like they are getting lost in the shadows so may adjust positioning or play with some more lighting :headscrat

Radar lol, sorry the old OCD flared up on you. It was done on purpose because the handle on that Oswego is so damn long it got in the way of the vises on the shelf below. After the pic the handle was returned to its normal position so you can relax knowing vertical harmony has been restored :)

Your display shelves and your collection look great!

If you’re looking for lighting ideas, here is a pic of what I did for my more modest collection.

These are LED flood lights screwed into standard outdoor floodlight holders. Cast aluminum octagon boxes screwed into a ceiling joist. Half inch EMT. Adjustable angles. Controlled by 2 three-way switches by the doors going in and out of the room in our walk out basement.

If has to be a modern heuer front, I'd try to get an older used one where the screw is still in a tube and maybe even the visible nut. Looks so much cooler IMHO. The pre war model is completely different with the round bar. Still lovely (all are hard to get in my part of the country, though. But I see that one 150 mm pre war one sitting there for 60€ "shipping possible". And I do have a Primus DRP 150mm just sitting around, too.)

On a side node, I was able to talk the owner of that VS2 near frankfurt into shipping it to me, I luckily got a fitting super sturdy DELL box (why did I throw its sibling away 6 months ago? Why?) at work, and some heavy duty styrofoam, too. So of it goes for 6 Euro, he gotta put it in (I had that template to work with ;). And back it comes. I put some bribe in (Stollen cake, it's xmas soon, isn't it?). If everything is good, then the new vise just needs some JB weld to fix some cosmetic problems (they are not compatible, new vise is thick jaw insert, old vise is thin jaw insert with thicker cast to make up the part that used to be insert).

Which also means that if everything turns out fine, a VS2 can become your vise. Because I have the perfect shipping box already prepared. (If I keep this box I might want to sweet talk other sellers into the same deal, better not). Be warned, though, this vise needs some reconstruction work to recreate the anvil plate, so unless a fake anvil will do, you might want to be able to machine or bend or weld metal together into a u shape and braze it on (Well that's what I'd try to do).

I just finished cleaning up the Starrett vise that I got last weekend. This is my first one and I must say this is one stout well made vise. The vise is a 924 1/2-C it has 4 1/2” jaws and weighs in at 85 lbs. it’s the proverbial brick shythouse, I can just imagine what the 6” must be like.e5fca3b39729b153a5a4975ef8c76b9e.jpga9c44808e799778768350950a0d34ea8.jpg
