I have a 2 car attached and insulated garage in my newly constructed house. The garage has drywall and 1 coat of mud, so I need to mud again, then sand and paint. The only time I have to work on it is in the evenings and it has been getting quite cold outside.

I was thinking about going to walmart and getting one of those oil-filled electric radiator heaters for ~$40. I want to get one with a thermostat so I can leave it on low and keep the place warm so I can start working as soon as I get home.

Has anyone used these before? Is 1 of them suficient to keep a 2 car attached/insulated garage at about 50-60 degrees?

It should pretty miuch do the job.. Its not going to get it super warm, but it'll keep it from freezing.

I have one upstairs in my house to supplemnt the furnace. It pretty much heats the whole upstairs, until it gets to around 30* out. Takes a while to get warm (only down fall)

They nice too because theyre not a fire hazard like forced air space heaters. So you can leave the house with it on.

I ahve the black Honeywell with digital t-stat. I think it was around $60. Works great. Stay away from the $35-$40 ones. I bought one once. Didnt put out quite as much heat, and leaked oil!

The wife has two of them in her 20'x20' building and can keep it at 70 degs. when it is zero outside. But that is with 2x6 wall and well insulated. Once in awhile she will bring them into the house garage that has 2x4 walls and 9 1/2 ceilings and in no time will take it to 60-65 degrees. I'm sold on them

I have heard from a few about leaking oil but have not run across that personally. Most recommend putting a drip tray underneath just in case.

I've got one of those DeLonghi oil filled radiators under my computer desk here. It has 2 seperate elements and I only use the smaller element just to keep my feet warm. When it gets chilly down here in the basement I can pull it out in the middle of the floor and crank it up full blast. Keeps it pretty warm down here, but like any other source of electric heat, it's expensive as hell to run.

It's about 5 years old now and I haven't had any problems with it leaking oil.

My shop is 1000 sf and loaded with Insulation, That is what I use and it works well on low up to 1.5 if you go to 2 it starts spinning the dial, but it really isn't bad Never drops below 50 but will keep it very comfortable if turned up. I do live where its cold, Teens last night.
You will want to turn it up in advance to dry mud!
Although I am sure your mud is dry by now

I used to use 2 to heat a 8x16 glassed in sunporch room during Maine winters for years. For the most part it always worked fine and kept the room a comfortable temperature except for the most severe cold snaps.

Thats what I keep out in my garage during the winter. I keep it on low and it stays around 45F in my garage. On high it will easily keep it above 50F. 24x25 garage with an insulated 16' door and insulated 2x4 walls and ~6" of blown in insulated in the attic.

We have one it even not so efficient for our smallest room when it's freezing cold outside! It's warm only if you sit next to it, I don't think 1 unit will work for your garage

Sounds like your insulation is lacking or poorly installed. These can really toast you in a small room (12x12).
