Bob, Shift and Tex. Thanks guys, posting pics of new finds is half the fun.

That 211 is very clean. Both my 211 and 212 have chips in the bottom of the steel jaws in the same exact spot.

I just picked up this Prentiss no.20, it has 4 1/2” jaws and weighs in at 65 lbs. This is by far the oldest Prentiss vise that I own, I believe it to be a 1st generation swivel jaw machinist vise. The plunger is date stamped 1887 +/- I’m still trying to figure it out. The vise has been well used but is in remarkable condition for its age. The pin doesn’t seem original but it fits perfectly and I’ve seen this style before in photos. The seller took $60 for it.cbc643720ab69b8e20dbab398d13d09e.jpg4815406dfea9642254449e7c30004c5f.jpg

Smitty, pretty sure that pin is OEM, I have the same vise with the same pin. Pics here https://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?p=6511553&highlight=Prentiss#post6511553 The pin fits perfect in another swivel jaw Prentiss I have that is missing its pin.

Thanks Rusty, I was surprised at how clean this vise was. The jaws are like new, I’ll post more pics when after I do a light cleaning.

454, thanks for posting, you do have the same vise. I believe it to be pre 1900 and truly a rare vise. Here’s a few more pics.e46ccabea3c2b39a28962913489b0b47.jpg71f769b1a66fbf024c58ccdbc7c92502.jpgcde7d2905110f4ecfed65252a60c3151.jpg212a869a68b822a3edb5674543b56c99.jpg
The collar on mine doesn’t have a set screw, it has a through pin behind it.

That’s paint scheme of the year in my eyes, the guy did a beautiful job on that Wilton. I must admit that’s crazy money though.

Smitty- that’s a nice old Prentiss in great shape.

As for the swivel jaw Wilton, is that big hole in the side original? Haven’t seen it on other swivel jaw Wilton’s.

Thanks vise. That’s a pin on the side of the Wilton. There’s a chain on the other side.

Wait till the buyer finds out you now have to pay sales tax when you buy on ebay and they even charge you sales tax on the shipping charges???:headscrat

Wait till the seller finds out he has to pay a total of 15 percent commission with ebay and paypal fees and also has to pay that 15 percent on the shipping charges???:headscrat

Seems like no matter what happens everyone just wants more money out of me. Doesn't anyone do an honest days actual work anymore and earn their own money without just taking it from someone else by changing laws or raising prices??? :headscrat

It's not on mine.---Might still be original on one of the latest version before they stopped making them, I just have never seen that before.---Don't really know what that pin would be holding since it has a threaded hexagon bolt at the front of the swivel jaw and the pin at the back of the swivel jaw for the purpose of anchoring and releasing for turning respectively.---Does look like a professional job though.

Well you called it Smitty.---You said a deep pocket might pop up.---Unless the seller is salting the mine.---NOOOOOOOO.:headshake

RB, you knew the answer to that before you ever asked it.---Welcome to the new normal.

You know what's really a head scratcher?---I always figured that a good recession would level the economic playing field.---That inflation and scandal would escalate for about 10 years and then a good recession would reset the clock.---That's been the pattern since the 1800s.---Inflation, scandal, recession, inflation, scandal, recession.---Wash, rinse, repeat, wash, rinse, repeat.---But that has changed since the last recession.---When everyone was near broke in this area, instead of adjusting taxes and cost of services accordingly, they raised the taxes even higher and prices for goods and services were raised.---It's as if the powers that be are saying (''I've come to expect a certain level of money, lifestyle, and luxuries and no recession is going to change that, so you people are just going to have tighten up and do without a whole lot of things so my lifestyle will go unimpeded'').

If you remember, even Washington was toying with just such a move, as they were contemplating taking every Americans hard earned pension, (except their own), and giving it to the big banks that bankrupted the system to start with.

It's a new era RB.---We'll just have to get used to it.

VA, I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s another bidder before it’s over, they just don’t come up very often. I googled Wilton vise 450SG and quite a few came up with the side pin with the chain attached. I’ll admit I’m not really sure what it’s for. My guess would be that it’s a place to store the pin when you remove it but why have two?

Found an explanation about the pins in a 1958 Wilton catalog. Seems that the original Wilton SJ model tapered pin wasn't threaded and the horizontal pin was used to knock out the tapered pin, if necessary.

I am all for having an easier way to get the pin out. Have had a couple of frozen pins on vises and they can be a pain to get out.
What started out as thoughts being way too high for that Wilton, with all the postings here I imagine the bidding will increase. You all have almost got me wanting one.

Isn't it funny how we all have the same Ebay auctions in our watch page? I'll bet a bunch of Ebay sellers have been excited at the possibility of lots of action in the final moments of their auction due to how many "watchers" there were. Little do they know more often than not about 30 of those watchers are us GJ vise collectors just watching for entertainment!

In that light, how many others watch vises that you own an example of that are listed with a low opening bid in an auction format? I do that all the time as it's fun to see what they go for and have an idea of value. As much as we all seem to be more and more turned off by Ebay, there certainly is something to be said about the gauge that it provides. There just isn't anything else out there that has the potential to reach as many potential buyers. I haven't sold on Ebay in quite a few years but I've sold thousands of dollars of stuff on here and FB that was easily moved by simply deducting about 20% of Ebay sold values.

I too was pretty floored at the final value of that Shop King though. Sure is a lot of money to pay though for a clean example with a pretty two tone paint job.

Ok, that's what threw me.---The pin is tapered so slightly on the end that in the pics it doesn't seem tapered at all, leaving me to wonder what an unaltered rod/pin would do for the swivel jaw.---Look at pic #3.

https://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=370559

And the pic of the second vise shows a preemptive indention where the hole might be drilled for the drift pin.

https://mivise.com/2017/03/wilton-450sj/

va, the side pin does have a heavy taper on the very end.Same principle as a drift punch for drill presses to remove the drill chuck that has a Morse Taper. Wilton uses a small taper 1-1/4 degrees per side 2-1/2 included. I built one for one of the Golden Pile vises.

Remember back in 2014 when this 450sj sold for $600. Back then it was an un heard price for a vise.

That is a big boy you have there burgie. Can you share some spec:s like jaw width, weight and max opening, need to record your vise on the Spreadsheet. Did that vise come from Colorado? Nice job.

Anyone knows anything about this 5" vise? I now and then see it on the classifieds, now a 2nd popped up with cut of end of the dynamic jaw and I think I saw another one somewhere else. Now I didn't really care, but ViseS is giving away for free a what seems to be a mini version of exactly this vise. I was like "I've seen this type".. So I just wanna know if this is american or german made or maybe you guys know even more. It can't be a custom made one like I first thought. Or?

Looks like a potentially fraudulent seller, as well. If you look at all the pics, you'll notice there are 2 vises...one the Yost with the braze repair, and another with pipe jaws and no braze repair. Hmm...
Edit: looked at sellers other items, they have a Reed combo for sale. So they're just a ******* and mixed up their own pics. Check out the $539 Wilton, she's a beaut

That sure looks heavy duty! I am planning on something similar in the future. I'm working on a deal for 4-5 vises in the next couple weeks and my current setup just won't handle it. What did you use to hold the shelves in? Screws from the side?

Honza:
Nice work!
That is certainly strong enough for anything that will fit on one of those shelves.
Looks like you had a nice sharp blade on your saw.

Mr.W:
Custom made shelves make the most of limited space. Not all of us have room for pallet racking.
Screws coming in from the sides are fine. That’s what I used for most of my 3/4 inch shelving. When I built my first set, I dadoed in all of the shelves. Later, for my smaller and simpler shelf systems like this one, I omitted that step and used glue and screws. With face frame construction it looks exactly the same when finished. If a guy wanted to show off his woodworking skills for exposed joinery, he might want to cut the dados. Dado construction with joints glued and screwed are stronger and would be the way to go if the shelves were designed to be free standing. Mine are screwed into the wall studs so they won’t ever rack.

Shiftless: what about some LED stripes for illumination? :)

Yeah, I actually considered that. Right now I have some pretty good lighting with a row of LED floodlights angled down from the ceiling. But the vises on the bottom shelves would benefit from your idea.

Im having visions of the color changing led strips in my garage lol. I will probably use the kreg jig from the under side of the shelf. I really like the strength of those fasteners.

I just ran 3" screws from the side. Pocket hole screws would be better, but I don't have the jig at this time (need to get it). With the wood being 2x12", using 3" from the side is ok I think.
