I have an SK LP90 3/8” drive ratchet, part #80200. I’ve used it a handful of times and it’s a really nice ratchet, but it sounds/feels a little “crunchy”, almost like it might not be lubricated. I’m wondering that in the event it needs lubricated upon opening it up, what would be the best lubrication for this particular model?

Thanks

I bought a new one about a month ago. I lubed it with assembly lube and it felt much more refined. The switch became slightly easier, as well. I'll never use it professionally and I have a lot of ratchets so it may never really get broke in in my lifetime. But I really wanted it and, so far, I really like it.

Snap-on uses Super Lube in theirs. I've tried it and it really quieted down and smoothed out a few Snap-on, Craftsman, and Gearwrench ratchets I have.

OP, how do you have 500 posts on GJ and not have seen to lube ratchets? Just wonderin...

In every one of those threads, there are multiple answers and people going back and forth. Sealed ratchets, non-sealed ratchets, oil, grease, do this, don’t do that... I do not care. I want to know what is recommended for THIS specific model considering it hasn’t been in the market but for a couple of years.

My question to you is, why worry about it? Seems to me people beat a dead horse on this board every single day. If you don’t like something, simply move on.

I've never seen a recommendation from SK that I remember regarding the lp90. Sometimes I wish the manufacturer would suggest lubricants but I suspect their warranty obligations may be the reason.

I have bought a few rebuild kits from SK for some of my many SK round heads. SK includes a small packet of lubricant with those (at least the DT's) which I think is probably a synthetic. They warn about using too much behind the pawls. I use it on new ones but I don't like using greases. I believe the heaviness can cause tooth engagement issues.

I asked about the lp90in here before I bought mine. I started a new thread about it as well as resurrecting an old thread. I was and am very enamored with this ratchet and wanted input from regular users. I got very little response. Since this is GJ and nobody was bitching (except the early selector issues), I thought it was a safe bet to go ahead with the purchase. I'm sure GJ users would have crucified SK by now if it wasn't a good product. While it hasn't been a game changer for me, it is a pleasure for me to use my lp90. I'm very happy with it even if the selector is a bit stiff.

I would contact SK for a recommendation.

I sent them an email through their website.

I thank the OP for the topic and those that suggest contacting SK.

Awesome and thank you. Please keep us informed if you receive a response. I am very curious what their recommendation is.

Jtels85,

Superlube is a very thin grease unless you keep it in the refrigerator. It's more like a translucent cream. It works well with fine tooth gears. I just dab some on the gear, and lightly coat the inside compartment. The backing plate gets a light coat too. The part number is 21030.

Thanks, Wamsutta. I’m going to pick some up on my way home this evening and try the Super Lube in my Craftsman 84T ratchets after I disassemble and clean them.

I have no idea what the "best" lube is for the LP90, I don't own one, but Superlube seems to be the go-to lube for modern ratchets, Snap-on uses it in theirs.

Haha! Thanks for reaching out. That was great that they were able to get back with you so quickly. I’ll try the Super Lube and see if it quiets down.
