My local do it best has 3/4" drive channellock brand for $79.99. Is that the going price? I have not found any recent 3/4" ratchet threads on Garage Journal.

It depends on what features you are looking for. A lot of the USA made ones like the Proto one are low tooth count. IIRC, even the Snap on ones are low tooth count. I went and bought an old SK one specifically because it had 72 teeth. I would only go buy those low tooth count 3/4 ratchets if the handle can be swapped out and I didn't have any high tooth count options.

If you are referring to this one, that's around what I would pay for it if they happen to sell a longer handle for it separately. There's also the made in Taiwan one that EZ red and others rebrand with the extendable handle.

Look around for a used craftsman 3/4. The selector and all parts are metal so they hold up better than the 1/2 and down raised panel ratchets. Best part is you can find them used for like $20 or $30. I don’t see the need for a high tooth count on a 3/4 ratchet. Usually when you’re using that size of a drive it’s for strength not clearance. I rarely use a 3/4 ratchet, It’s either a 3/4 impact or a breaker bar. Actually what I use it for most are trailer wheel bearing sockets which are all 3/4 drive for the inner and outer nuts.

We have a Craftsman 3/4" ratchet USA made. I don't like it. I was hoping for a recommendation for a ratchet with an easy warranty other than Snappy.

That's why I mentioned the KD. From personal perspective. I wouldn't care about warranty or parts because I highly doubt I would ever need either.

For comparable price, this guy will buy the American made 100% of the time unless the product is obviously inferior.

As others have said, SK is a great 3/4" ratchet because of the tooth count, and it's built like a tank.

Seems even most of the import stuff tops out at 24-36 tooth, and having the smaller swing arc makes all the difference when there's obstacles and a 5ft jack handle on the end.:lol_hitti

Either older Napa brand kd or Matco for pear head style
Around 50 usually

High tooth look at beta or sk or facom

Proto is always good but these are heavy duty and most cases a corse tooth will be fine and the guts are made to last a very long time without issues and jack handle work great as add ons

I bought an entire Crescent branded set with extensions, a breaker bar and sockets (7/8- 2”) at Tractor Supply for around 60-70 bucks a few years back. Have used it a total of one time but nice to know I have it if needed.

Well I drug out the 3/4 ratchets I have picket up at garage sales.

In order of tooth count:
SK (Craftsman): 72
New Britain (Blackhawk): 44
Craftsman: 36
Proto (los angeles): 24

In order of back drag (low to high):
Proto (los angeles): 24
New Britain (Blackhawk): 44
Craftsman: 36
SK (Craftsman): 72

In order of head size (small to big)
New Britain (Blackhawk): 44
Craftsman: 36
SK (Craftsman): 72
Proto (los angeles): 24

In order of length (long to short):
Proto (los angeles): 24
New Britain (Blackhawk): 44
Craftsman: 36
SK (Craftsman): 72

Which one do I tend to use:
New Britain (Blackhawk): 44

Why? It has the best combination of head size, tooth count, length, and low back drag. Also not very sought after so prices are usually low.

I just warranteed a Craftsman 3/4 that literally fell apart. I got it at a garage sale that way but when I took it in I looked at what was on the shelf. I'd definitely stay away. They were all the same. Super rough and very sloppy. In every one you could see the poor machining that caused the original to come apart.

I don't know that this applies. Different companies in different countries in almost assuredly different decades made the ratchet that you bought already broken and that you exchanged without paying the owning company a penny for the tools. I'm sure that the design is the same, but the processes to manufacture them are of course not the same with so many variations.

I don't believe the cost of a 3/4" ratchet is significant enough to worry about things like: if the tool breaks, where does it get warrantied?

Ebay has truck loads of good, USA forged ratchets at $50 and down DELIVERED. Proto, Armstrong, Craftsman, Bonney, and rarely an SK.

I don't foresee you breaking any 3/4" ratchet anvil or gear. These ratchets can easily take 1000 ft*lbs without failure. I don't see the reason for worry?:headscrat Are you consistently breaking these things? Bruce Banner, is that you?

My favorites are the Danaher/Apex USA made ratchets. Available in a slew of brandings and with QR and non; 36t, which is relatively fine for a drive size this large. Super strong mechanism, I've never broken my Craftsman over dozens of wind turbine tower installations(with cheater pipes of course).

KD, Matco, Craftsman, Gearwrench, Allen, Armstrong are a few of the brandings.

The Armstrong version has the strongest handle design by far.

Having more than a passing familiarly with 3/4" ratchets, mostly company supplied ,I'll offer an opinion . Any time you use one, it's heavy work. After almost losing my life when a Westward slipped, for work, it's Proto or Gray, period. At home I bought an ITC, on sale, a Taiwanese clone of the Proto, since I'm not up high, merely working on a Jeep or a trailer, it's good'nuff.

I shopped around for a deal on one of these new...145 shipped on eBay. Wright 3/4 rats have 45 teeth.

I prefer SK’s of those I’ve used. I have two of them, one old and one I bought recently. I’ve got a Taiwan Napa one that doesn’t get used often, but is ok for what it is. I’ve also got a removable handled one of probably 36 tooth that will also take a beating. FYI- wcp0611 has a 3/4 Carlyle in the classifieds. He’s good to deal with if that interests you as well.

That's a badass ratchet

Thanks
I learned about the 6425 on here. My dad has a standard length 3/4 Wright 6400 and it has seen some abuse. He said he pulled it from a scrap hopper in his mid 20s and has had it since (he's going to turn 71 this year).

I also have an SK-Wayne and a Bonney with a removable head like Snap-on. I do like the SK and it is a finer tooth but the Wright feels more robust how it ratchets.

I felt that since I had 2 ratchets and a breaker bar in 1/2 drive that were longer than my 3/4 tools, I had to step up my 3/4 game. Everything in my 3/4 set I got real cheap piecing together a mishmash of used old USA brands, I felt I could drop some coin on a nice XL rat. Most money I've spent on a ratchet that will most likely be used the least. No worries, I will invent uses for it.:spit:
