The only sale I saw today that had potential was in Mill Valley. Usually I don’t think of Marin County as a hotbed of vintage tools but the sale proved me wrong. I found a bunch of rusty Snap-on and several of the other brands I collect. I think the new Evaporust is going to get a workout! The first shot is the whole haul, the second is the Snap-on stuff. The next shot shows the Plomb, Craftsman, Thorsen, Powr-Kraft and Barcalo. The dual marked Proto/Plomb combo was a nice find and the nutdrivers cleaned up pretty well.

I finally cleaned up that Reed & Prince cross-recess tip - don't call it a Phillips, 'cuz its not! - screwdriver (See Pics 1-4)

Post WW2 Chris Craft boats were built using R&P screws. Could be war models had those screws but i never worked on any, and not sure any survived. I wonder if the great WW2 boat builder Higgins had anything to do with that fastener?

My dad built a Chris-Craft kit runabout in the 1950s, and the screws furnished were all R&P.

Picked a closing down tool shop over the weekend. Technically not a garage sale, but definitely garage sale prices. Hard handles were $1/piece. Found them in an old coffee tin or random old screwdrivers.

I really like like that wide flat blade snap on.

Thanks. I just checked what these have been selling for on eBay. I was shocked. I don’t think that they will be with me long!
-Don
Edit... I cleaned it up today and it looks almost new.

How much do they sell for?

The trigger finger mittens are M-1965's in really nice condition. I plan to use them as cold weather motorcycle gloves.

My dad got some of those surplus mittens with the matching wool liners when I was a kid, although it was prior to 1965 so they must have had a different M number. Anyway, they worked very well in cold weather - I used to wear them when I went sledding. :)

On Friday I hit two estate sales with decent luck:

The first one was pretty sterile, having everything put into lots for pricing. But I managed to find most of a Mossberg set and a bunch of misc. sockets I was interested in. $10
The second one was much more fun.

P&C and Plomb LA sockets, very early Craftsman chisel and a couple of Proto wrenches. $6. Then I hit a used tool place I like and spent some real money:

Par-x and a Penens 1/4 ratchet marked Artcraft and a couple misc. Proto sockets. $20

Today, I hit the last auto swap up here, meeting Smokeshadow, Provincial and Oregon Rock Crusher in the process. I had a good day, picking up the following:

Proto ball pein, small metal box, Thorsen and Armstrong ratchets, a Herbrand wrench, P&C socket, Craftsman heritage socket set box, and the smallest t&d set. It goes down to 1-64! I only managed to spend $25. I also found a dual marked Plomb/Proto but traded it to Smokeshadow for a full catalog binder. I also did some horse-trading and whatnot, but I will have to put those pics up later.

Yep. Scraper.

Nice haul Don. What’s the DOE with the inset markings? Does that say Wards? Looks like the Wilde or Truth with those deep markings.

Thanks. It’s a Wards Master that’s currently having an evaporust bath. I grabbed it just because it was different looking.

There are a couple different style mittens that go back to WWII. Mountain Division cold weather equipment. The same guy had a pair of those and a 1942 dated pack frame (famously made of composite) that he wanted way too much for. The KW era are the most common - but they don't all have trigger fingers.

I think this is the first time this year I've posted in this great thread. I had one of the busiest tool buying weeks I've had in a long time and figured to just throw them all together here. I had an older low hour Toyota forklift delivered to my home shop on Monday and that is a huge addition to my capability. I've been looking for a while and this one fit everything I was looking for. Triple mast, pneumatic tires, and with forks lowered it is about 7'4" so it can go through low doors and will pick over 5" high before the mast gets any higher. Already getting a work out. It's an enabler for sure and I love it. I also bought a very heavy casting that will make one heck of a neat flag pole base. (last pic)

Next stop was the Albany swap meet where I saw many of my GJ friends and picked up a few things highlighted by some early Firestone demountable wood spoke wheels and hubs. Also an interesting three drawer roller, maybe Beach? I've got to look it over a little closer later today.

Last stop was a machine shop where I picked up a South Bend 10L lathe. Missing a tailstock and steady but mostly there otherwise. It will be a bit of a project. They were also selling tooling for .05 a lb so I bought about #100 of adjustable reamers and other sharp cutters for an extra $5. A few pics of this weeks new toys. I'm way over tool budget this week. Ed.

Ed- glad to see you ended up with that red and green roller. I am thinking it is made by beach? I liked at it but didn’t have a spot for it but it is very solid. Lathe looks good as well!

Hit an estate sale Thu morning and was able to nab all the items I went for plus some other stuff.

The Forester was loaded down and I had to return on Fri to get the rest.
IMG_9593.jpg

The main item I'd hope to get was what turned out to be a 22-drawer Art Metal storage cabinet. Made in Jamestown, NY.
IMG_9635.jpg

I spotted this Cole cabinet when I first got there sitting in the driveway in the rain. I'm not sure what these are used for. A couple of folks mentioned possibly stamp collections which this estate had but I'm not sure. Anyone know? Feels like it was made to survive a bombing. Stout to say the least!
IMG_9600.jpg

Nabbed this little Neumade cabinet in the wood shop. It's filled with brass pipe fittings and such.
IMG_9603.jpg

This little jewel was found in the wood shop. I've been hoping to find another one of these as my son got the other one I found a couple of years ago. It's in great condition.
IMG_9613.jpg
IMG_9614.jpg

I had spotted a piece of one of the 60's Craftsman block grinders in the background of one pic in the ad. They guy was asking $125 for the grinder with no stand and no quench tray. I tried to tell him he was way overpriced IMO. He let me know he'd been doing this for 20 years. I'm pretty sure the kid was still in his 20s. Anyway, the estate sale ad didn't have a pic of the Delta 1" sander. Again, overpriced but I threw an offer at him and he accepted. Been wanting one of these for a while. Although, I'm not sure what I will use it for. Great condition.

Got all of this for under $10 at an auction last week. Most of the wrenches in the second picture are craftsman and one S-K Wayne. The hex keys are a mix of Bondhus, Lisle, Channellock and Lawson. With a mixture of Ball/Std and SAE/Metric.

G-sales have pretty much dried up around here except for the overpriced estate sales.

Found this nice Starret 614 vise at a new estate sale company that priced things at g-sale prices. ($9.50)

An assortment of new Kershaw Japan knife $5, original Swiss army knife $1, solder sucker $.25 and Swanstrom precision needle nose pliers $5.

Cobra 1000watt inverter was in the free pile. Seller claimed it didn't work but I tested it out and it seems to work fine.

The rest of the haul from Thu & Fri...

The Craftsman 6" grinder wheels (36, 100 & 220 grit) and the wire wheel don't have any wear on them at all.
IMG_9618.jpg

A couple of Union Tools calipers, General pocket rule with 1/8", 1/16", 1/32" & 1/64" fraction to decimal conversion on the back, Snap-On FV71 3/8" ratchet, pick, NOS Kromedge file, 5/8" Dowel center hole and sockets (3 Snap-On).
IMG_9621.jpg

Bought all the sandpaper in the shop and these storage boxes the PO had built for it. Have another full box of sandpaper in various sizes and grits not pictured.
IMG_9624.jpg

I'd seen this little hip-roof toolbox in one of the pics but then couldn't find it in the garage. Luckily I was back in the garage when someone did spot it under the workbench. He wasn't interested but I was glad to get it. They had it priced at $30 with a hodge-podge socket set in it. I offered $20 which they took. I overpaid but this is the only leather-handled box like this I've come across in the wild. I suspect it's Craftsman but no badge. I can't see any remains of a decal either. The interior paint is really good condition and looks like that greenish color that Craftsman Heritage-badged boxes had. Contents are all over the place but all US made. Anyone know if this is a Craftsman box?
IMG_9594.jpg
IMG_9596.jpg

The contents of the Art Metal storage cabinet. Most likely a big box of junk but I know there are 2 good pencil sharpeners in there. And it will still be fun to go thru later hoping to find something worth keeping.
IMG_9644.jpg

I had to return to the estate sale on Fri to get the Art Metal cabinet. I was also able to locate some more goodies. Proto wrench of some kind (AN-8505-7), Thorsen 1/4" ratchet, pulley, file handle adapters, 3/4" 6-pt socket and the Metabo metal box (empty).

Dave *****!

Txlonghorn, if that Cole cabinet has hinged dividers in the drawers, it is probably for inventory or address cards. Many people gut them and use them for stamp or cartridge collections because of the shallow drawers.

Could fit a decent ratchet collection in there as well.

Artcraft was Pep Boys brand. This shows the name goes back to 1940.

hey txlonghorn1989 , Nice haul !
Is that a chip in the last grinding wheel ? about the 8 o'clock position
give em a ring test and be sure there good. A wheel with a fracture can explode.

Here's a youtube.

Man you guys are killing it!

A slow Sunday here, only one moving sale: got an Osborne brass tack hammer - the small end is magnetized to hold tacks. This is after a quick stab with Mothers on the brass, - needs more and a quick clean with Murphy's on the handle. it needs oil and I've started with Lemon oil.

The step is like the steps we had on a 50's jeep panel wagon. it had a rack on top for hauling trailers and several of these for rack access on one corner. hat rack was handy for deer hunting!

I'l probably find a use for it on the Toy Van 4X4 project...

A buck each

Prov, it does have the hinged dividers in the drawers. The thing is a lot heavier than it looks. I was thinking it could be used for drill bits, chisels, punches, etc.

Farleyfan, I didn't spot that but it is a chip. That's the only blemish on it. Good eye, good catch! I will try the ring test before I use it. Thanks!

Interesting. I have an Artcraft box like I said and have been trying to figure out what exactly would go in there. Now I know to look for old Pep Boys ads.

Congratulations on the Crown carry box. That looks like a nice straight one.
No sales for me today because I had to spend most of the day cleaning yesterday’s rusty treasures. Only one socket was too far gone to save. The DBE is a 1939 Plomb 1145. The Barcalo adjustable was made in the former Danielson factory, probably in 1952.

Lugz, somewhere I have a Nu-Thre(a?)d no1 (tpi 11,12,13,14,16,18,20,24) which is the typical design. Here’s a pic, but it doesn’t show the brand. I’ll see if I can lay hands on it and update this post.

Thanks, LS. That raises my confidence level appreciably, since Reiff & Nestor owns the patent. I'll be curious to see if I'm right.

I was looking for something else today and uncovered the NU-THRED no1 file I mentioned so looong ago. One side says “JAW MFG CO READING PA”
Still in business: JAWCO founded 1950 by James A Williamson.

I have only seen a couple and they were 250-350ea.

That high? Wow. I guess I did better than I thought.

Thanks Don. Did you see the small hip-roof box with the leather handle? Any thoughts? Here are the pics again, plus some pics of a tag that is on the handle...

LS and Lugz,

I just happened to have one of mine handy, (headed for mt Van project tool box) and it appears to be early production as it has the original Patent on it: 1,694,229. - Granted 2,20 1927. http://www.datamp.org/patents/displayPatent.php?pn=1694229&id=21208

If Jawco was founded 1950, then they picked up on the expired patent (or possibly bought the original Co? :dunno: ).

Inventor was Joseph P. Nestor , and it was assigned to Reiff & Nestor CO -

Mine is marked: (4 asides)
Reiff & Nestor CO
Lykens, PENNA.
MADE IN USA

PATENT NO.
1694229

NU-TRIX

NO, 1 uss, sae (stacked)

Hit that estate sale again today and found a couple more goodies. $2 total. Craftsman 3/8" ratchet, another Moody pick, Husky 3/8" extension, Stanley 199 box cutter, Fuller grinding wheel and a Craftsman 4-way slotted/phillips screwdriver. The 4-way has 3 bands of info stamped around the middle. 1st band: Craftsman, 2nd: Made in USA, 3rd: WF 9 4112 K. The other similar one I've got is a CM Crown and the middle is square versus round on this one. Any thoughts on age and who might have made this for Sears?

I checked it out but didn’t recognize it. Hopefully somebody here will have more information on it. On your offset screwdriver I think WF is Western Forge.
