Rapid Charger. Apparently these issues are a "thing" and are considered normal. Some get hot, some don't. seems screwey to me. The majority seem to have coil whine as well.

What's the deal with Milwaukee and coil whine? The standard charger that came with my M12 Fuel kit hisses/whines so damn loud (to my ear).

Never experienced that with my Makita and Dewalt chargers.

I just got back from returning my 1 and only MILWAUKEE tool, M18 Mid Torque Wrench, at HD. I met a Milwaukee rep there, and didn’t realize he’s there Monday through Friday, which is pretty cool.

I’ve pretty much decided I’m going to go with the M12 Surge combo with free 6ah battery today. This will be for around the house and small fasteners on my car. I’ll then be waiting for a deal on 3/8 stubby.

Just another one of those things, like the continuing drill chuck wobble, that some people are annoyed by and complain about and others pretend is non existent by ignoring it.

None of my Ryobi chargers have ever exhibited these issues nor has a Ryobi chuck had wobble. I've just learned to be more picky on tools from specific brands (no Milwaukee drills) and ignore things that haven't presented a problem (Milwaukee chargers).

M12 surge is a great tool. I use it for normal bolts on the car along with the 1/2" Stubby for bigger bolts. I keep the High Torque around for axle nuts if needed. I liked the M12 surge so much I bought the M18 version to use for driving screws around the house.

In before something says my hearing is messed up and the charger is truly silent.:lol_hitti But Milwaukee does have their share of issues. I've never tried Ryobi but it's interesting to hear they don't exhibit the same issues (both being from TTI).

IMO Makia seems to be the most consistent. Dewalt does drills right but Milwaukee does impacts significantly better.

My recent, late to the party, purchase.

M12 Surge is not good enough for driving screws around the house, or you just wanted something stronger / faster?

Just placed an order for a M12 Surge combo with free 6Ah battery for $199 with free shipping and no tax, plus 5% back from CC and 3% from cash back site (lets hope this 3% actually works). It's OOS from acmetools so I'm going to have to wait 10-15 days, but I'd say that's a pretty good deal.

Nope, with an XC pack the M12 is a tiny bit larger in 2 dimensions and the same size in the 3rd.

The M12 surge is much smaller than the M18. Price wise the M12 was cheaper for me as well as I got it NIB on Offer up for $80. The M18 was NIB for $95 from a pallet dealer.

That’s a little disconcerting, but I’m assuming it’s still lighter?

I still think I’m better off focusing on M12 tools for DIY work.

New pliers showed up today.. too lazy for pics, but they are obviously much more Klein-ish hand tools finally.. not a huge fan of the angled diagonals myself, but thats the only Klein-ish version available. They have 2 different styles of diagonal cutters out now. In 8” its either the Klein type style, or a smaller head electronics type diagonal which is a completely different design.

I dunno why they keep fighting it.. just copy what every other big brand is offering for diagonals and be done with it already. They NEED to make these in a non-angled head version. Haven’t taken them out of the package yet, but the lineman pliers i went with (they have 3 types) have the 5/8” thread cleaner under the jaws. I got both the lineman and diagonals in the dipped (Klein/channellock) style grips.

The final finish of the tools is much more refined. No more rough looking metal in basic form..

These defiantly LOOK more like tools youd expect to find a pro using..
Once i play with them a little ill decide if ill swap out my NWS stuff at work and use em, at least temporarily.

For what its worth - i just took the diagonals out of the package, and squeezing them as hard as i can, i cannot get the jaws to skip over each other. Seem to operate reasonably smooth. I cant help but wonder whos actually making these.. The Klein style copy and timing has me wondering if these are coming from the place as HF Doyle’s are..

After playing with the lineman’s a bit at home - they seem every bit on par with a pair from Klein (at the risk of offending some people). They were tight at first but have smoothed out quite a bit just from me sitting here and playing with them. The machining on both appear to what you expect from pro-grade tools. The finishes are very smooth. They seem to operate quite flawlessly and the handles are finally perfect time tested designs. Time will tell how they hold up. I’m gonna use these at work for a while and see how they do. I really like the dipped grips.

I’m still suspicious if these are coming from the same place as Doyle’s. The Milwaukee’s are made in china - I’m (kinda) hoping the Doyle stuff is Taiwan (i dont know where they come from) just so i know I’m looking at something different. Ill say ive looked at some of the crimpers on the lineman pliers on some Doyle’s in the store, and it was obvious thats where the level of care in the machining kinda stopped. Gonna have to pick those up at some point.

So far, given where Milwaukee started off with pliers - these seem pretty impressive. A very welcome, but long overdue upgrade from every previous model.

Anyone ever have this happen? Was working on my garage door install this weekend and we suddenly realized the battery was not seated properly anymore. Look and see the whole top came off. The battery still works and it shows a nearly full charge still. It's just the casing, screws are there and plastic sheared off.

Nope the M12 without a battery is heavier than the M18 without a battery.

The only Doyle pliers I have are the needle nose and they are made in Taiwan. IIRC so are the rest of Doyle pliers.

I saw on amazon that they have knock off m12 9.0ah batteries. I am I wrong to think this is a “worse” level than using a knockoff battery with the same ah as a genuine m12 battery?

If it's under warranty still you cary file a claim (if it's worth it to ya)
If not, I'd send that pic to Milwaukee's FB page and just write what happened. Might take em a while to respond but I bet they'll send you a new one.

Honestly the M12 FUEL stuff has been great for DIY work. I ended up getting the M18 Fuel drill because the M12 fuel was struggling a bit with a big hole saw through metal, but it got it done. I really just like to have 2 drills for wood working, so it made sense to have the M12 and M18.

Just give it time, you'll have a tool box full of both M12 and M18 stuff, esp if you stick around this thread

Do any of you guys have experience with Milwaukee’s ProPex tools?

I’m curious if the heads from the M12 and M18 are interchangeable? There look to be two styles. I’d like to get the M18 tool but need to be able to do 1/2”, 3/4” & 1” so I’m not sure if the smaller heads that come with the M12 tool will fit the M18.

Yup, same thing happened to one of my 5.0 packs. Had it on the small blower and set it on an empty bucket which fell over onto my asphalt driveway. Screws dont really have much bite into the plastic.a639c2fe18c2f629738f0971a40f2147.jpg

I'm considering the 3/8 vs 1/2 version of the M12 Stubby impact to complement my 1/2 mid-torque. My impact sockets are 1/2, so I'm thinking that it might make more sense to just get the 1/2 so I don't have to buy more 3/8 impact sockets...

Any downsides to getting the 1/2 version of the stubby instead of the 3/8?

I only have the 1/2" version because that's all I see as a need for an impact. You can always use an adapter for 1/2" to 3/8" if you absolutely need to impact something in 3/8" range. My 1/2" impact sockets go down to 10mm anyway.

Theres a great deal on the M12 pex kit with 2 XC 3.0s at CPO $330 and via rebate you get a free M12 PVC cutter and large packout organizer.

I bought the 3/8” stubby and 3/8” impact sockets (Sunex master set with universals and Astro nano sets). You can use 1/2”, but sometimes the sockets might be too bulky to complement the size of the stubby. The 3/8” sockets are a good match for the capability of the stubby. A 3/8” adapter adds more length, no thanks.

A good set of 3/8” impacts costs around $70, no reason not to have it.

I just saw your post in another thread with the comparison pic of the socket sizes, and I'm sold on the 3/8. (https://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=402723)

I also saw the master set...genius. Would be nice to have all the impact sockets I need in one case to drag to the race track. Thank you for all of the helpful info, now I want more tools

I haven’t taken it apart before. I don’t believe this one is under warranty, as date code is 14. I did buy a new 5ah this summer. I messaged through Facebook. Thanks for the idea!

For all you claiming the M12 Surge is bigger than the M18 Surge and reading the spec sheets seems to baffle you with the maths, here are some pictures.

I have them lined up with the top even and the back of the motor housing even for reference.

M12 on top of M18 for length and handle size difference. Bottom of M12 handle slightly larger around to accept batteries, but top is narrower. The grip area is also much shorter than the M18.
Swnq8fY.jpg

M12 rear of housing to bit holder slightly longer.
Kd3hjBM.jpg

M12 in front to show it's narrower than the M18 behind it.

Here's some other new goodies I got over the last few weeks I hadn't posted yet.

Packout set on sale.

Blanes F&F deal I picked up to keep the batteries and sell the Impact I already have.

This I've had a few weeks, but hadn't got around to opening until this morning.

The heads are interchangeable between the M12 and M18 kits. I have the M18 kit (despite being way more expensive, because I refuse to buy anything M12) and it works well. I used it for my in-floor heating install and will be using it for when I re-plumb the entire house as well (the main reason I bought it).

Is there a thread or YouTube video that explains all the different m18 grinders? Or a general consensus on which is best for light grinding or cut off use. I want to get one but there are so many models and I don’t really have a place that has decent selection to handle them.
