Tym: thanks and the ad said PHARMACY, but HERBS really describes it better.

SB:

ALL: i'm not sure i've posted these cabinets already, but as i was looking for the Chinese Herb cabinet this one showed up.

these are too nice to put in my garage, but some of you can eat off your floors and benches in yours so maybe it's something you'd like to search for and use in yours.

cheers

Rikki: I can't even remember where i saw that nice old wood tool chest, but I think it was online and maybe googling so let us know if you find the plans or more pics.

ALL: I saw this and really didn't care that it's made out of old plywood cause it has the LOOK and it smells old. not sure what i'm going to put in the drawers cause they are only about 1-1.5 inches deep, but they are pretty wide and deep so we'll see.

anybody else have one like this and maybe have an idea on the maker? I didn't see any name on it, but I haven't looked it over too closely yet. its on 4 small casters so if i don't load it up too heavy I should be able to move it around my new woodshop in a couple years once it's built.

post up your cool wood toolboxes and cabinets cause I know more of you like these and probably own a few.

also if you restored one please show some before or after pics cause a lot of us would like to spiff up ours.

cheers

AK: I thought Hamilton was the biggest maker of the wood printing cabinets. i've never heard of Champion as a cabinet maker, but I think they made lot of tools and some for Craftsman so i'll have to check that out.

i'm not sure mine wasn't home made, but it is pretty good construction and quality.

thanks for your thoughts!!!

Looks like the original image came from this post, and the Pinterest folks are spawning it everywhere. Might need to expand it, but there is an image of it closed too.

I swear I saw something similar in a catalog today while looking for help on my next post, but that will have to wait til tomorrow’s underway.

Hey all

I've had this tool case kicking around the shop for a few years, mostly waiting to improve my leather working skills enough to fix the handle. I've never been able to find anything close to an identification on it. Here is a quick shot.

IMG_1405-X2.jpg

I've been to ToolBoxTed's guide and none of the 3/2 chests are the same size (18+ inches wide), nor are they metal over wood. May drop him a note too. (Actual Size 20" Wide, 11-1/2" H, 7-7/8" Deep)

You can see some more detailed shots of it here to see details like the cheap sheet metal knobs, etc. The funky round keys make me think its older.

Is this considered a wooden box, or should I add it to the vintage metal box thread. Thanks for any help you can offer.

RTM: sure post it over on the metal cabinets thread too if you have time and also add it's dimensions.

any name on the lock?

I love the vintage wood metal combo cabinets and toolboxes and yours looks in pretty decent shape.

I recall chatting on a thread years ago about how to replace leather handles on old toolboxes and it might have been on the vintage toolbox thread if you'd like to make a post about it over there too.

I can tell you that i've seen more damaged and missing leather handles on old tool boxes than ones in good shape, but if that box means a lot to you and you'd like to have a custom handle made for it I bet there is a leathermaker in California that has that skill.

another maybe simpler method is stealing a nice leather handle from another toolbox and of all the leather handles i've seen Kennedy seemed to make the one that held up the best so look for a $50-100 Kennedy cantilever box and swap out the handles and sell the Kennedy or keep it to store tools in cause it holds a ton of stuff.

good luck and thanks for sharing!!

OK, now that the question above is out of the way, lets fish out some pics of the other vintage wood cabinets, chests and cases in the shop.

Not in a chronological, but rather how easily I can find the pix. The main shop storage for woodworking tools, a pair of salvaged Linen & kitchen cabinets, one from my 1st house, the other from a salvage yard. The saw till is a repurposed gun rack, right on the edge of vintage I'd guess. And no, the shop is nowhere near that clean, I had a garage party coming, so I cleaned a lot prior, and it lasted a week.
DSC09502-X2.jpg

This one I bought just 'cuz I love the little ring pulls. Suspect it is user made, mostly due to flaws in the build. I've cleaned it up here, put it back into service, but don't have a new picture.

IMAG0853-X2.jpg

This is my workhorse fastener storage case, bought for $40, but he wanted $50 if I didn't take the contents. Lots of **** inside has mostly been thinned out, replaced it with vintage fasteners, and 1 or 2 drawers of modern fasteners.

IMG_2337-X2.jpg

These two came as a package deal, both boxes and their contents for $200. Story of the acquisition here, was kind of a big deal for me.

DSC08791-X2.jpg

Here is how they reside now, the bottom one is on a rolling cart to get access. Currently used to hold rehab project planes.

IMG_1402-X2.jpg

This one is ugly as heck, and someday may get cleaned up and put back into service. A CL find for cheap. Or put it out at the next garage sale.

DSC09067-X2.jpg

This cute little thing (under 2 ft wide) was picked up at a flea market, and had a few design flaws. No handles, and the lock didn't work. When you picked it up in the logical place, you opened the lid. Found some vintage wood, and added a pair of rails under the lid to make it lift able. Still trying to make a key for it after many years. (Another one with no current picture.) This was going to be my traveling box, big enough for a #5 plane, panel saw, the bigger pieces I might take to someone's house for a small repair.

IMG_0169-X2.jpg

The leatherette covered Gerstner was bought for the machinist's tools inside, and I didn't realize it was a Gerstner til I got it home. Needs major work, someone broke the front flap to get into it, some mold on the back and bottom.

IMG_20180925_165926-X2.jpg

And then the recently acquired Union, similar to Lugz's, using his thread for guidance soon, now that the tools have been integrated into the herd. Posted this in the garage sale thread a few weeks back.

IMG_20191029_201859-X2.jpg

In the rehab category is this Lufkin (already repurposed once, need to make it useful again.
IMAG3020-X2.jpg

And this unknown cabinet, may just be a parts box at this point. (The metal boxes will get posted later, quite a pile in rehab now)
IMAG3168-X2.jpg

In the partway to vintage category (not shown), I have the tool storage I built under my workbench, cheap wooden knockoff, and a few repurposed wine boxes. I think that summarizes the wooden herd.

Thanks for looking

RTM: another post you can make is on the new leather thread here in vintage I started so maybe some of us city boys can learn more about how to treat our quality leather products.

Drives: I have a friend who is a vintage book restorer (the 100+ year old family bible is his low end), and he subtly suggests that I shouldn't talk about leather in public. I've made a few leather blade covers and things, and while workable, a they are a long way from quality. His opinions on leather work and its preservation are pretty harsh based on what he does professionally, and feels that most stuff out in the public realm is only a short term fix, but doing long term damage. Our woodworking group has a few guys who are into vintage leather for cavalry re-enactment stuff, and they also agree that short term preservation kills it long term.

He recommended the book Art of Making Leather Cases v2 on handle making, so re reading it before I start cutting leather for any of my chests. <--- Will add this over in the leather thread.

RTM: it's hard for me to read the link you posted about the tools inside your two wood tool boxes, but guessing there were a few gems inside it. congrats and if you still have pics saved of the stuff please post them here cause it might be good for others.

thanks for sharing all your wood cabinets and tool boxes. I like the dark brown or maybe it's black cabinet with the file drawers about 2 inches deep. any brand name on it or maybe it was custom made?

i'm also looking forward to learning more about how to preserve leather cause I really like the products, but hate that I let them crack or fade terribly. or worse I get leather gloves at Costco for so cheap that i've never treated a pair like a quality item and tend to use them outside and once they get wet almost immediately there is a hole in one or several fingers.

again thanks for taking the time to post up pics and tell a little story too.

The gem is in the center of the center till here, a Stanley #1 plane, For those not into woodworking, this is one of the "normal" hot finds that many people crave. Few pictures before, and many afterwards from this one.

https://kirkhmb.smugmug.com/Woodworking/Woodworking-Tools/i-BzkSC4t

https://kirkhmb.smugmug.com/Woodworking/Woodworking-Tools/i-bTBZbGg

This is the one find I have where someone went crazy with a sand or bead blaster, and thrashed a few tools. Fortunately, they skipped the #1, and a few of the better tools. This was one of my first "take a risk and drive an hour" finds, and it sort of unleashed the floodgates on better tools.

It is dark brown, and I am guessing custom made, never found an ID on it. The majority of the drawers are a touch over 3" deep, as I put a bunch of Schaller organizers in them.

Bunch of pics of it as found here.

As mentioned briefly on the '2019 Garage Sale' thread, and again on the 'Toolboxes' thread, I picked up this Black & Decker chest this morning. I don't know anything about it. I am guessing it's at least 1940's, maybe older. It has a leather handle and dovetail finger joints. The dimensions are 22-1/4" wide x 11" deep x 14" high.

I am not a woodworking guy, so if anyone wants to have fun identifying what tools or pieces of equipment might have been stored in the various compartments, have at it! I would love to hear it.

Additional shots, including construction details, and the decals. (As you might expect, the one on the inside faired better than the one on the outside.)

That spot on the left with the recessed part I would bet is for a circular saw, but overall, I think it is for a whole set of tools and accessories. Circular saw, jigsaw, sander, all together.

That's what I was thinking, based purely on the overall size and the four main compartments, but the items just don't "visualize" out of thin air for me like a mechanics tool chest would. What are your thoughts on that piece that hinges on the upper right to allow something to be slipped in that slot and then secured? Also interested in your thoughts on the piece on the right with a "heel" impression in it. What might rest in there? Also, I am figuring a drill had to go somewhere, as the upper drawer has slots for drill bits.

Also think how heavy that puppy would be with 4 different vintage tools in it. A 1930 1/4" Light duty electric drill looks like it weighs 15#, but only tips in at 6#.

Wonder if it was for something like a valve refacer, or other oddball tool, though the slots immediately made me think drill. Looking for catalogs.

I've got the 1953 catalog and I'm looking at the Vibro-Centric kits right now! Dang, I think you're right. But it appears they used the same cabinet for many kits. Same layout. So I'm missing two drawers. Well, that *****. I just thought those were meant to be open.

EDIT: The catalog isn't showing what goes in the upper drawer.

I'll post scans.

yup, yup, and yup.

I think the misc pieces in front go in the top drawer, long skinny things in the "drill" slots, two closest to the cabinet in the oddball slots, no idea in that right most bell shape.

The 456 has the wrong "top" drawer for your cabinet. Maybe the piece on page 58 middle right fits in the bell shape

EDIT: Thanks, RTM. That IS my cabinet! I must have a different 1953 catalog, because the layout is different in the cabinet I am looking at. I also found my cabinet in a wartime catalog I have, but the drawer pulls are different.

The really cool thing is - it's not for wordworking as I expected! It's automotive! For valve lapping and grinding. :)

RTM,

Just so that you don't think I'm loopy.

Pic 1 is the cover of my 1953 catalog. Pic 2 is the Vibro-Centric kit chest in that catalog. And Pic 3 is the Vibro-Centric chest in the wartime catalog.

As you can see, the wartime chests have the same layout as my chest and the chest in your 1953 catalog, but different pulls. Whereas the chest in my 1953 catalog is clearly not the same chest I have or the same chest as the chest in your 1953 catalog. The layout is different, and it has a drop front lid, not a hinged lift lid.

My hunch is your catalog is earlier in 1953 than mine is in 1953. It's the only explanation I can think of.

I was too late looking at this thread. I thought it was the Vibro-Centric set. I have the individual parts (except the driver) that I run with a large die grinder. I believe that this design is the best hard seat grinder stone holder, due to the clearing action of the stone leaving a better finish. The pilots I have include one that fits in the block of a flathead V-8 instead of using the valve guide.

LUG: great find and nice research as per usual. also looks like the A team came out to play with all the information on that rare old box.

i'm guessing if BMW is right that my old Black & Decker 6.5 inch circular saw might be the one that goes in your case. I have to say if you can find one buy it cause it's a beast and so comfortable to use too.

sorry I thought I had better pics of my B&D aluminum circular saw.

WELL DONE and good for you for not leaving it cause the conversation is probably worth more than the payment and it just keeps getting better.

cheers

Well, if you ever pick up a driver and you're looking to have a historically-correct and aesthetically-pleasing box to keep everything in, chances are I will still have this! Most of these kinds of finds just sit around until they find another home! :)

I think Beemer and I jumped the gun mistakenly and RTM (and Jock, in asbentia) nailed it. It's clearly for a Vibro-Centric kit.

This is the catalog I used, your pic #2 is on the page I left open, the pic I posted is on the next page.
Thanks. That page is not in my 1953 catalog. Only the sleeker one with the drop front panel. I'd bet they dropped the older style in 1954.

Some guy posted a fuller set of this on my FB feed, then took it down. Slightly different config, three drawers top 1 big left, two smaller right. The full width drawer (bottom?) had a series of spindles, and the dozen or so stones were arrayed on it. The small drawer without the dividers had a bunch of stuff thrown in loose.

Wasn't quick enough to grab a copy before he pulled the post.

Picked this up over the summer. Nice old bookcase made from oak, I think. I thought it was factory made, but after a thorough cleaning, it looks to be homemade. Not sure when it was made.
4' wide x 5' tall.

Love that oak bookcase! Looks like it was done in an Arts & Crafts or Stickley style. Great old look!

Nice to see you making a few comments Drives!

Came across this at an old farmhouse cleanout. Gonna take some r n r, but gonna be pretty nice! Has cool story too, jewelers bench from downtown cedar rapids in the 1920's and 30's. Lot of original tools left to clean out too, and stack of original business cards.

ZRX: great find and maybe post up pics again of your little cabinet once you have time to spiff it up. even if you don't want to keep it I bet it will be worth your time to restore it cause it should have some serious value.

GAS: happy to see you on this thread and nice resting spot for the upper old wood cabinet. sounds like it might just stay there and never get a bottom and place inside your home.

ALL: one thing for certain being above dirt and knowing that there are still great old cabinets out there 2020 hopefully will have many more finds to post. I really like finding them and the drives home with one in the back of my Honda Pilot usually always brings a big smile even if i may not have a place for it at the moment.

cheers and hope you all have a great year!!

Gas: Like that cabinet but like the contents even more. Are those all Stanley planes or a mix of makers?
