...and besides meeting him, and a friend....I also had a great time re-doing this phone. Thanks again Mad57.

I painted it in Hammertone black, got a few new parts like a lock, handset and stainless vault door from an on-line source. I was amazed to make one phone call to get everything I needed.

Anyhow...it's on the garage wall and it's even functional. The problem is...now I'm itchin' for another little project. I guess it's time for the traffic light I've been storing.

Thanks guys.

I actually did more research on these things than I needed. Bell had their own payphone lines, that ran on something like 130 volts. This allowed something called a coin relay to work. The coins were counted while inserted and sent a signal to Bell to allow the call the be made. If busy or no answer, this relay would send the coins to the return. If the call was made, they went to the valut. No one but Bell can have these payphone lines. If this phone had the relay, any coins inserted would back-up.

So, when a coin gets dropped in...it goes straight to the vault. This phone works like a normal phone.

That's really cool.

I recently put in a replica of an even older model. It's not as cool as an actual old phone, but it's nice to hear a real bell and have something with some weight to it to pick up.

The other thing with a fixed model like yours is that you never have to go digging around to figure out where you set the phone down last.

I have one of the older one's that a rotary dial, and has the three coin slots on the top, and dings the bell when you put coins in it. It works, but I'll have to look online for a handset cord as years ago I changed it to a normal soft one so I could have more reach with it.

I also have one of those old remote dial phones that the handset cradle is separate from the dialing mechanism....

Looks great Matt, I haven't started on mine yet, but I'm looking forward to it. Good to hear hooking it up won't be a problem. Where did you source your parts from? I would like to get the plastic inserts and a few other items. I was planning on using the hammer-tone or wrinkle paint on mine, nice to see how it turned out.

66Hertz...payphonedotcom.

All you need to do to make it work (providing the guts are good) is to hook up the Ring and Tip on the yellow card in the phone. It has 4 screw connections. If wired the standard way, red goes to the ring, green to the tip.

I used Rustoleum hammertone. The black has a slight goldy-metallic look which is cool.
