Here’s mine minus the pipe jaws of course.

My neck has been killing all day, can’t figure it out.fc4351c6dfb2538197f84477a78c0f64.jpg01b76b4ad0d45644ced06efe500faac7.jpg

Thanks, Bob. That’s a great score on the Columbian with pipe jaws. Nice stand for yours too, Smitty.

VA- thanks! I always make it a habit to ask what else do you have laying around and have gotten lucky a couple of times :)

Ken agreed, this is my third one of these lol

Vise- thanks

Smitty nice vise and the stand is cool

M635- sure it entices some to buy a vise but it drives many to the dark side of of vises: needing more than one, more than two, more than 10........:shocking:

here's a an old pic of the first 204 1/2 i restored

So stoked - my first real vise after reading this thread five or so years ago and wanting a Wilton ever since. years of scouring clist and marketplace finally turned up this gem! to be honest I thought it was a tradesman until I got it home. Seems brand new.

Congrats on the Wilton C0, it looks like new old stock. What’s the date on it?

That’s an amazing find.
Not just NOS but looks fresh from the factory! Look at the shiny metal handles! Must have been stored in a climate controlled environment. Did the former user wear cotton gloves when turning the handles?

I've been keeping close tabs on the vises and the bidding at the local auction. My God! People are nuts. I won a 70's era small USA Craftsman for just under fifty bucks which I thought was too high but I wanted it. Glad I did because every vise that has went through that auction since has been stupid bidding. Right now there's a Wilton Scout (which I don't consider a very good vise but its Wilton) in real good shape. It's already well over twenty bucks with three days to go on the auction.

I want a bigger vise than my Craftsman 3 1/2". But I don't think I'll be buying it there.

Try craigslist, facebook, estate sales, offerup, flea markets, garage sales. There are plenty of home owner type vises out there.

Here’s something I was given a few months ago. Needs A LOT of work, but I’ve located a few parts for it (some more to go). A very rough and damaged Prentiss 23:

9e8bf7235362d227febfc8dd826dd759.jpg

Also, picked up something this week this group might be interested in. Although I respect the allure of the Wilton bullets, I generally prefer the heavier duty vintage brands like Reed, Athol/Starrett, Parker, and Hollands. But just couldn’t pass this Wilton 800N up:

:+1: to that.
Excellent advice !
That’s what I’ve been doing for years. I’ve found a few of the better and more interesting open screw homeowners vises along with clamp ons from major manufacturers and even a couple of Wilton bullets and a few 6 inch Reeds. I have found vises from Parker, Athol, Starrett, Holland’s, Morgan, Rock Island, Columbian...many more are out there somewhere...you just have to keep looking and be willing to drive beyond your immediate neighborhood.

Vise:
Nice score
Prentiss double swiveller and “free” is certainly rare. Congrats.

That 800N must have been a bit difficult to load into your truck. Those are 200 pounds aren’t they? I hope you did a 2 man lift. (Or do you have a little crane? :) )

You can’t go wrong with a Wilton 800 and it looks like it’s in great condition. The 23 seems to be fairly clean. It looks like there could be a repair on the slide at the dynamic jaw but that’s the only thing I can see in the photo.

Havent posted much in the last few months. Been traveling doing some big power projects. I had a chance to clean a few up on one standby job for a few weeks... I have picked ups few vises traveling all over....

Gave this little reedsman some love

attachment.php

here's a new finish I tried out on the 2c. more on that later..

attachment.php

saved this 506 from the scrap yard. dynamic jaw is dented horribly.... still works like new. more pics on this one going into the Columbian thread.

attachment.php

picked up a 106R while on the road. two different dates between the dynamic and static jaws..... maybe a warranty? maybe leftover parts thrown together? not sure

attachment.php

picked this 3C up from a fellow member. it has a broken ledge that I'm going to fix. Even got a set of Kevins jaws with it......

attachment.php

same job I redid the craftsman, I tried playing with the art neuveaux metal oil... doesn't stick to super smooth areas. not sure how I feel about it yet

attachment.php

you can almost see the C1 on my service truck.

That’s a nice group. Just a “few” vises right? :)

Nice lunch spread. Chili con carne with sour cream & cheese, and some what look likes dehydrated banana chips... GREAT!

What’s in the bowl on the left? Chopped peppers?

Here's a little novelty vise that just arrived.---Weighs 8.5 lbs., has 2 1/2'' jaw, and opens to 2 3/4'', is 8'' in length.---It has no makers mark but looks a lot like the Milwaukee style of casting.---I included a Milwaukee vise (not mine) for comparison.

Vise collection so far

-Craftsman vise - left it home otherwise I would take a better picture
-Craftsman machinist vise - Probably my favorite and most used
-Wilton (snap on) mechanics vise - the name plate is incorrect, in search of someone who can make the snap on name plate
-Yost 33c - just repainted

very cool thread. nice finds and collections, everyone.

i'd post in this thread, but i don't have 20 posts yet: https://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=437690

as you may have seen, the yost adi-5 is on sale on amazon for 165 (about 180 after tax for me).

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00E8ITETS/?tag=atomicindus08-20

https://camelcamelcamel.com/product/B00E8ITETS

i'm really considering buying that as my first vise. i didn't know ones that nice could be had new for that cheap.

just about any vise would be a godsend. i've gotten by so far by begging people to hold things with pliers for me while i work or by stacking bricks and patio pavers around and on top of a workpiece. obviously this is ****** as hell.

that said, i'm willing to spend a little more if there's an even better quality option. maybe somewhere in the $300 range. are there other options i should consider? thanks, guys.

Welcome to our crazy little corner of GJ

Of course you need a vise. Are there no vises on your local Craigslist, OfferUp or ???
If you post your specific location rather than just “Midwest” maybe a nearby member can help you out. If you were closer, you could buy one of my extras for well under that price.

You can post your needs in the “wanted” section after 5 posts which you already have.

Picked this bad boy (Wilton 600S) up today. I paid full asking price ($450) but he drove about 75 minutes to meet me part way, so I only had about 4.5-5 hours total driving versus about 7. Worth the $50 it sounded like I could have knocked off.

This thing is entirely unused. The vise was never mounted to the swivel base and neither were ever mounted to anything. I think the vise itself had been laying on its side on a floor or something for a bit, or was stored somewhere with moisture, because one side is almost immaculate and one side has a decent bit of surface rust.

I lubed all the moving bits with some SuperLube and cleaned the rest off and gave it a light coat of camellia oil in addition to a soft scrub with a blue Scotchbrite (the softest one). Looks great! Thing is a beast...pop can for scale, of course.

Considering these retail for $1500 I think this might qualify for a 'you ****'.

That's a decent price to pay for a keeper in that condition. I thought about buying it but don't have need for another 6". The seller updated his ad after it sold commenting on somebody who offered $150 that it sold for full price - that person had no shame!

Thanks, Smitty. The 800 will be here soon and I’ll be in a better position to review it’s condition, but I agree, it looks to be in decent shape from the pics.

The 23 is not clean, unfortunately. When I got it is was missing a foot on the swivel base and the center bolt/washer. I found replacement pieces for those. The slide repair you noted is an issue, the jaws are shot (need to mill them off and drill/tap in replacements) and, most important to its function, it’s missing the spindle nut, which I’m still looking for. I got the swivel lock plunger working, but still haven’t unstuck the swivel jaw and it will eventually need a swivel pin. It’s a big project that will take quite a bit of time to complete, but free is free.

Good luck on the Prentiss, I look forward to seeing the finished product. I’m assuming you got the swivel base from eBay since the listing for it is gone. I almost bought that base numerous times thinking I might need it when I find my 23 some day. You lucked out finding that for sure, they don’t come up very often.

If the No. 23 uses the same spindle nut as the No 22, I might have a lead for you. Guy on FB group "bench vises forever" messaged me when I was working on my No. 5 that he might be able to help me out with one. I the swivel jaw on my No 5 was frozen as well, and I found lots of heat, a BFH (dead blow) and a very heavy table to clamp the vise to was the only solution, after many other methods.

Got this Interesting vise. I don't know who made it yet, but it's called "Pador" and features a double screw/nut system where you only need to turn the handle 1.5 times to open and close the vise completely, but when you clamp down on something the fine thread is active and gives you the full clamping force.

I saw that vise on instagram. That thing is awesome. Really probably a pleasant vise to use.
