Gents, I am finishing up a craftsman 51871 resto and for the life of me cant remember the order the e clip/ spring/ washer(collar) go in on the handle. Does the spring but up against the washer collar which in turn buts against the e clip?

The reason I ask is I have seen a sears exploded part diagram that shows it goes washer, spring, e clip; but I could have sworn, when I took it off, it was spring, washer, e clip.

I have attached a picture of a vise just like mine, but restored from an older GJ post.

Also attached is a picture of the spring, washers and clips in question before I popped them off the main acme nut.

I just happened to picked up a 51871 the other day. Here is what mine looks like. I doubt it has ever been apart.

Hope it helps

Ya...I have a barely used 51861 I found at the flea mkt for totally cheap (yup was a great deal :D) and it's also the same as the above photo

clip/washer/spring just against dynamic jaw body

Mines need paint also. Looks like it was some shade of gray originally

I do like that Green

I am a vise newb so excuse the question, but how tight should the bold that holds the spindle nut from the base be? I was missing the bottom bolt so replaced it with one from HD that filled the hole well and seemed to have the right thread pitch, but if you torque it down even a bit aggressively, the base wont swivel. Pics of the bolt and spindle nut I am talking to are attached.

Should the bottom bolt thread deeply into that spindle, or just enough to hold the spindle nut in place on static jaw?

I'd want the bolt to capture as much threads as possible. Go until snug and then back off until it spins free.
