Please post that in the SPEEDNUT thread, 3bay. See 'SPEEDNUT' in the Index in the Sticky on the Vintage Board. We haven't seen any LARCOLOY's posted there. It's an early one. J.V. Larson's Larco Wrench & Mfg Company bought out Cochran Wrench Co. Later, under the SPEEDNUT Corp name, Larson's improved patent (to the original W.W. Taylor patent) added the little thumb-button locking mechanism that you see on many of the later versions. Early Cochran's and early Larco wrenches such as yours don't have it.

Lugs, couple pics of the file roll. It came out of a real cool wooden tool box at the flea market, think it said signal Corp on it. Probably should have bought the box, but didn't know what I'd do with it, and it was real far from my truck. Just noticed the markings stenciled on the roll. Most of the files are still new, wrapped in paper.

Rained out except for a single one day estate sale

Did well considering, Had to pass on a green wood box that I believe is a camp kitchen box. I may swing by late and see if I can get them down...

Not surprisingly, everything here came out of the garage:


A hatchet, a Stanley Handyman hammer: I'm pretty sure this is older, the head styling drew me to it. The nesting hammer is not a GAM and only the two smallest actually screw together. and three well used US Aemy twnt stakes for the shelter half pup tents.

Dutton Lansing Golden Rod oiler - has something in it I haven't checked out, but in really nice shape. Reflective tape, a hood pin, and a copper plated tool I believe is for welding use but can't recall what for.

North brothers Yankee driver and a smaller Craftsman (old script but not Long C) A draw knife I'll have to work at to get the markings readable, a multi chisel/awl - I have one or two of these, but the chisels are unique (and pristine) the cap is friction taped, and shows a crack so I'll re-glue that and lose the tape...

The Needle Nose have a K in a diamond (similar to the flat SK diamond) but the K is centered. Krauter? (never seen a Krauter with this logo); A chopped off Plvmb, A Williams, a Vlchek, and a smaller Ford.

and a Deitz Comet (small lantern) missing the globe but decent.

Almost forgot: stocking stuffier for SWMBO:

the sheath is worse for the wear, but recoverable with Saddle soap and Neatsfoot. - I will need to re-stitch the edge:

And why is was a no brainer! Official BSA! - In nice shape too!

It even has the original haft! (Official Scout Axe)

the Deitz Comets were marketed as BSA as well (on the box) and the stakes for the pup tent; those surplussed shelter halves were common in scouting for years after the war.

Interesting catalog! That last pic indicates the wrench sizes went from 3/8 to 7/8, so I'm missing 2 - the 1/2 and 7/8, BUT I also have a 15/16...

Not many sales here lately. I did hit a couple of estate sales Friday, and found a new file handle, a 6"/metric pocket scale, and a set of Craftsman 3/8 drive metric sockets from 9 to 21mm 12-point.

My favorite find was a New Britain NBD626S spark plug socket. I had to buy it because it was soooooo coooooool! That knurling really sets it off, and the rubber insert is still good.

The sockets and scale are for my son, who is going to college in Berlin, Germany. He is gearing up for tinkering and repairs, and everything there is metric.

What you have is TE-17, File Equipment. Definitely WWII. The BG-38 is the Signal Corps nomenclature for the "bag" (in Signal Corps terminology) the kit came in. The kit was one of many kits and tools that came in TE-11, which is the largest Signal Corps toolkit. It came in a large wooden box with a chained lift top lid and several drawers.

How long ago? Where? And how much did he want for the whole box?!! I am surprised the seller was selling individual pieces. Or was it empty except for a few things?

That roll is in remarkable condition. I would have grabbed it too. I’m not familiar enough with Signal Corp stuff to know what set it might have been out of. Maybe Lugz will know.
I finally got around to cleaning up some of the Craftsman tools I found on Friday. Besides the long C stuff at the top of the second picture, many of the wrenches are early =v= metrics.

Not a definitive answer to the question, but I think not. The similarity is inevitable from like material and function, I’d guess. Aside from the square vs round forming of the handle and the small slot being an actual piercing (for the detent ball), the Hinsdale has one striking advantage, at least for collectors: the ell is trapped by the pin so it cannot be lost.

Lugz, bummer about the box, it was exactly as you describe. That's what I always wonder when I see something like that that I have no knowledge of, am I leaving something valuable behind? Pretty unlikely I'll ever see it again, it was at the Seekonk flea market around the beginning of the summer, don't think it was ever there again. I didn't ask how much, but I'm sure it would have been reasonable, I picked some other tools out of it and his prices were very fair. Not stuck on the file roll, I grabbed it mostly for the brand new files, but even at that I have hundreds of other files. Forgot to add, the box had a bunch of other tools in it that I don't think would have originally came in that kit. I'm sure the seller knew no more about it than I did, was just another toolbox to him.

At an Estate Sale today, I picked up this Hobart motor with stand for $25 and this Wright tool set for $10. The set is missing the 1/2 inch socket. I'm not sure if it came with a ratchet.

After a long and unproductive day hunting near Berwick yesterday, I was taking it easy this morning, and checked up on this thread. Suddenly I remembered that I hadn’t been to Jake’s flea in weeks, and time was running out (closes for season around Christmas)!
MrsLS is in Pittsburg with LesserDaughter3, so I hastily fed and walked the LesserDogs (LD2 apparently ate a tree ornament yesterday), and headed down rt100 in 23° but sunny skies.
$10 procured the following: Disston level, two Stanley wood-handled screwdrivers, an old C’man EZ-hold screwdriver, a 1940s Bonaloy 2805 DBE wrench, a suspected Bonney 8” Stillson adjustable, a suspected Bonney table vise, a New Britain DBE wrench, two Bonney CV DOE wrenches, a Plomb 5420 socket and a WF Plomb socket.
$2 more got me a 6” old crock, and $5 bought a tasty breakfast.

Todays fleamarket finds, I should have bought a lottery ticket,

3/4" Gray flex head
3/4" Ridgid die holder
1" Ridgid die holder, both small ratchet

All were $10 each and on my want list.

Two open end wrenches, Williams Superwrench 3/4 x 7/8
And Grey forged steel 11/16 x 19/32, with no model number and being forged steel, I would think early post war 2nd line. A dollar each.

I looked up the new prices, Amazon doesn't say made in USA on the pipe dies ? And a set of three with ratchet was about $350. And cheap Chinese set are around $100, so $350 within brand name imported range.

Last Wednesday I had some business in "the city" but was able to take the long way home and stop by a favorite Restore, where I found the following:

Proto spinner, Klein crimper, Plomb offset driver and a geometric C brace set

All the bits are Craftsman market and only missing the 1/4".

All right, my fellow pickers--I'm just about there with the list of finalists for 2019 Picker of the Year! My criteria remains as stated in post #1: to nominate the thread participants with more than 20 posts who have had the best overall year, and all of you vote on the winner. I have spent the last week reviewing the year's posts, picks, and feedback from as many of you as I could (not easy to do with over six thousand posts!). I looked for consistent posts of picks, finds and hauls, giving more credit towards posts of actual stuff found than commentary on other's finds (although I certainly think the follow-ups and the history lessons from our members makes us all better pickers!).

It was actually a lot of fun to review so many cool finds, especially when I looked for "**** or suckage"! I ended up with a list of 116 individual posts that were awarded a "You ****" by one or more members of the thread, and I know I missed a few. Heck, in reviewing them, I encountered posts above and below that were certainly worthy of such accolades, but somehow didn't get them.

My last task before opening up the 2019 PotY poll to collect your votes is to construct the trophy. The parts have been sitting in my garage for the last 10 months--I just need to get off my duff and put them together. Be On the Look Out for updates this week!

Picked up this lot from a seller today at the flea. There was a mess of Canadian tools on a table. I seem to see quite a few from people who relocate here to FL, same with Euro tools.
The funny thing was two visiting Quebecers were shopping around one stand I was at earlier in the day, and they popped up next to me exactly when I was digging through all the Canada stuff. I was like uh oh! I don’t think they were tools guys though, as they grabbed some cheap import wrenches. I pointed out the Mastercraft things to them and they certainly knew the brand.

I was excited to find a Plomb Ranger combo in the mix.
-Gray Canada pieces include a rolling pry bar, 1/2” speeder, cross bar, 1/2 ext., combo wrench, box wrench, punch
- Proto Canada punch. I never see Proto Canada stuff.

3Bay Garage , the Cluthe' screwdrivers are top quality, certainly the Robertson were the best you could buy. The green Multi Driver is a Canadian classic, we all had one. The Mastercraft are Will, also high quality

I like that handle design better than any other. There's just no comparison . Both have the easily replaced pin as the weak link.

A small haul from an annual antique show at the local Shriners Auditorium. The author of the horology book writes in the first person at times, making amusing editorial comments about some instances of poor repair work illustrated in the figures. The napkin ring is sterling and will go nicely with a set of cocktail napkins I have. The buffalo nickel (I'd say the condition is more F than XF) was in a half-off pile as it's the last day of the show.

Most of the tools I saw were overpriced (my Yankee frugality prefers fleamarket-style bargains for those). I took a quicker pace than usual viewing the vendors as I had a lovely Colombian acquaintance with me and am conscious I possess the ability to bore women effortlessly.

My grandfather had a Cluthe Torque Top in a tackle box, still have it somewhere.

I saw an older Gray 3/4 bar like that earlier this year but must didn’t have the cash!

I will say, the Robertson drivers are something I used to see a lot of over the years in Buffalo. I believe they showed up under different names. Definitely solid tools.

Also saw some Fuller Canada branded stuff today.

On Friday there was a listing for a tool sale on my way to some other things I had to do (X-mas shopping) and another estate sale. This is what $35 bought me:

There was a lot of things grouped together, the sellers (two women) knew Craftsman but not anything else. For instance, they had C-man sockets for a buck but anything else was .25. Here is everything I kept:

The sockets at upper left are all Snap-on, SAE and metric, a small drafting set, random sockets (MAC, Proto, SK), thread cutter, tire pressure gauge, Snap-on flex extension, Snap-on ratcheting driver and spinner, three outside calipers (one union, two unmarked) and wing dividers. And some sort of pin with a braided cord.

Vlchek 5/8 wrench, Matco 88 tooth flex, SK breaker bar, Case scissors, geometric C 9" combo (blued blade!), Brown and Sharp Combo and protractor, unmarked but high quality metric caliper, and Mitutoyo metric dial caliper. I got all that over two stops at the sale. There were a few things I really thought about but had to pass for room reasons but not prices, which were quite good.

I then went to a sale way out in the country, and while you have to take chances sometimes, this was a chance that didn't pay off. Oh, well. I did pick up this light jacket though for $5

LL Bean, canvas with a flannel lining. Fits very well over a sweater!

No loss on the gray 3/4", I actually liked Princess Auto's ProPoint handle design better. But even on a good sale , which I was waiting for, they were 4x as much. Both designs easily accommodated the required pipe.

A lot of older Fuller Canada is Japanese KTC, well worth the peanuts you are going to pay for it. For Robertson screwdrivers, the made in Canada Fuller are the best currently available. I'm stockpiling.

I made good progress tonight. It was fun--cutting curves in metal is soooooo much easier with the plasma torch. I even got the electrical parts nearly done without blowing any breakers. Next I need to finish the packaging ...
