Lol. That’s awesome it turned out to be a perfect fit. After owning a bunch of vises any ideas on who was the original maker of that vise?

Other Craftsman vises from that period were made by Rock Island but I can’t be sure.9d279cae4ab9d8217d86283c2d64fd9e.jpg

They are cool vises for sure I really like mine. The quick release is very convenient and effective on them.

Another Grand Master for comparison... before & after. There's a small Parker 973 in the background of the finished pic.

Looks like a german LUX offset vise just popped up at the classifieds. I like the design more than the Dawn.

That looks cool bastel, I keep a permanent eye out for the Fortis version of an offset, as its also a left handed offset which would be more useful to me, they are rare though.

merry christmas

wishing all of my online vise buddies and their families a happy holiday season.
This little display is here in our dining room until after new years.
My wife bought the santa and the workbench in grass valley ca. From the couple who made them. I added the vise after a long ebay search and successful bidding. No id markings on the vise. Penny added for scale.
The vise should be about a 6 inch in "santa scale"
I just know someone is going to build a vise tree this year
tis the season,
xmas outlawmws has his santa hat on

Not the expected vise tree but, Merry Christmas!

Picked up a clean Littlestown vise, I think it is a no.2.
I just "found" the same vise (by fait accompli - it was inside a toolbox I bought) this morning at the flea market, Red. Tiny. 1-7/8" jaws. And it won't even clamp on my bench. Found your old, old post in a search. And I think Outlaw has an even smaller exposed screw rail type clamp-on Littlestown No. 1.

Question is: Does anyone know when Littlestown Hardware and Foundry moved from New York to Pennsylvania?

Thanks for posting the pics of your Milhoff. You did a fantastic job polishing and painting and polishing some more. I’m glad to see you even use it!
Is that Sunrise Red or ???

Long ago I met a guy who owned a Shelby Cobra (not a mustang...the other 2 seater aluminum one) I saw it parked in his huge garage and casually asked if he ever drove it and he said very rarely. That was, he said, because when he gets back home with it he has to put it up on his lift and spend several hours just on the underbody detailing to get it back to the way he likes it.

Just for contrast to tj’s beautiful double swiveller Milhoff, I thought it a good time to post a pic of my latest acquisition. Rescued from a rainy back yard is this Reed 3CA. Common wisdom is that the later Reeds like this one were made by Columbian. The profile backs that up.
No cracks or grinder/saw marks on the jaw towers.

Check out the solution somebody had for tightening up the swivel locks. We can’t be too critical here...there was no doubt work to get done and you don’t just requisition new handles and wait around for them to arrive.

I'm thinking this might be TOO big to be a bench vise.

Pelletman:
Nice father and son display.
Those are the “real” Reeds unlike the CA series I just posted a few minutes ago.

Is that a 4C next to a 1C ?[/QUOTE]
I have some hands on experience with a couple of 4Cs. I’m still trying to think of what kind of abuse it would take to bend that handle. Tighten with a fork lift? 6 foot long Schedule 80 steel pipe cheater?

Be careful...many regulars here don’t recognize the words “vise” and “too big” when they are used in the same sentence. :)

Search for “Millscott” if you want an example.

Thanks Productbob! Running out of room on my dresser, wife has all the good corners of the house taken up with her mini box collection. Some people will collect anything.

This is one of my users. Not happy with either of those type of screws though.

Finally put in slotted screws.
2-1/2 (?)" brass colored #12 wood screws bought from the internet, cut to size, harder brass then I remember but the slots still get messed up without the correct screwdriver.
Found afterwards a box of plated 1-1/2" #12 slotted wood screws, wrong color.

That LUX... first time I've seen one. Rare indeed. I am not interested in having one (right now ;)), know somebody that really is. Alas he lives on the wrong side of the country for this cast steel vise (which makes it shippable, probably) since it says no shipping. He has to rope in his boss' friend or something. I wish him luck, with the high price asked (120€) there is a chance for it to stay long enough.

Jeff: Looks really nice, but I guess not as stable/firm as the other vises?

I saw that, akasrick, as well as an even briefer summary on vintagemachinery.org, which basically cites the old TA site, which mirrors Littlestown's own history site. If by "Same people?" you mean "Same company?", I would assume so. Two different companies with the same exact name would be too hard for me to believe. Hasn't anyone else wondered why some of the vises say NEW YORK and other PA? Maybe they didn't move. Maybe it's not a case of earlier and later. Maybe they had an office there. I'm still curious to know why.

Why settle for just 30?

Another ad in the Chicago area on Craigslist offers 72 ! (Picture below)

It’s a couple of weeks old so maybe a lot of them are sold, but what’s up with bulk sales there? Is the market peaking and guys are liquidating their collections? Or is it just that collectors like me are now past 70 y.o. and maybe getting too old or sick to continue and/or have to move into assisted living? Or is it the heirs unloading Dad’s vise hoard? :dunno:
