2ool: thanks for the effort to post a picture of your gal!!!

Farmer: the pictures are fantastic and the stories are even better. thanks for sharing. although your mom is maybe correct that there weren't a lot of tools and stuff inside the garage i'm sure more than a few of us would love one of those old gas pumps.

Moto: I can't recall how old I was when that glass thermometer went in my mouth instead of another area since my mom was an RN (nurse). nice kit!!

I remembered this thing I got at a swap meet a year or so ago - it's a Pontiac accessory kit, my understanding it is from the late 1990s and it came in the trunk of Bonnevilles. It has a bunch of miscellaneous items like a pair of gloves, a cloth rag, an ice scraper, a rain poncho, a tire fill kit, and a few other small items. It's way too new to go with my 1961 Bonneville but it was so cheap I couldn't leave it behind.

While not strictly automotive related, this hangs out in my garage. My wife found it at an estate sale and couldn’t leave it behind.

So here's a VLCHEK bearing scraper. Some paint left but no handle. Overall good shape. Any thoughts on replacing the handle? This is not for resale just putting together a family collection. Not sure if I should track down a raw file handle and patina or if there are any other more knowledgeable suggestions!

I will answer in the Vlchek thread. See Index in Sticky, or wait for it to be bumped with my reply over there.

Not the most expensive item I found in the country garage pick, but very high up the list in terms of charm.

Old Schrader Balloon Tire gauge made expressly for Ford Model A (which falls into place for so many of the specialty engine repair tools as well).

Apologies for multiple pics of the same item, but I felt everything engraved on this is worth seeing.

Just discovered this thread - my good friend Steve Friedman passed away last month. His family was in the car business since 1946 and this video from one of his sons highlights some of the memories from almost 80 years in the industry.
I am helping the family sell hundreds of old car owners manuals and have some on eBay currently.

Coincidentally, I found a 1955 Texaco road map at a flea market a few weeks ago. It's the Canadian version. While I'm at it, here too is a poster from a long gone race track.

Found this in a barn in PA. Haven't been able to find when they stopped doing these races but the track was in/near Wysox, PA.5367b9eca7a70f97a86aa6376257af6a.jpg

AA Auto Service - later AA Auto Parts - 3802 Pacific Avenue, Tacoma, Washington - 1946

"Just look for the hubcap display"
"They call it the old Double-A

at 3802 Pacific Avenue
just look for the hubcap display!

Well, I saw old Johnnie Kirk
and he was hard at work
a prunin’ up the Green Ball Bearing trees
he was diggin’ in the soil
and plantin’ Eastern Oil
and his fender skirts were flappin’ in the breeze!
"

I knew you grew up working in an auto parts store, 4.c., I didn't realize you also had a full service station in your heritage. Between you and Farmer J. (scroll back a few pages), the thread has been blessed with some cool personal memorabilia.

Also, that is one badass-lookin' crew on that truck! :)

I think I may have been to a Tractor Pull there in the 70's.

I saw this cartoon in the Sunday Funnies. It's not vintage, but it's my thread, and I don't really have a better place to put it, so I get a one-time pass.

This may not be all that vintage, but it seems appropriate. Merry Christmas, tool buddies and buddiettes!

We were most likely both there then. Had 2 uncle's big into those tractor pulls. They had some loud machines....

Originally the building was a house, which was converted to a gas station. As time went on, he added a four bay repair garage onto the structure.
Hydraulic lifts at the time didn't have the sort of safety features as those of the current era.
The part of the lift that raised the car was essentially a large steel "H", the side rails of which were those which raised the vehicle.
One of his mechanics was doing a brake job, sitting flat on the floor with his legs extended under the vehicle.
The lift failed and came down instantly and cut both of the man's legs off above the knee.
My father had all of the lifts removed from the shop, filled the holes with cement, and installed large windows where the bay doors had been. He then filled the building with parts and accessories and never did repair work on automobiles again.

I suppose at some point I should dig out the old photos of the building, which range over the course of the 46 years we were in business.

Thanks for posting the song lyrics above. I suppose I should note (for the benefit of others here) that it was written by "The Crazy Cowboy" Larry Bremer, who sang it on a local AM radio station to the tune of "Mountain Dew".

He was a bare-fist boxing champion while he was stationed on a U.S. Marine Corps gunboat off the coast of Panama from 1928-1931. During his three years of service, he managed to make PFC with an honorable discharge, but not before being busted down to buck private after he told a captain "Take those goddam bars off and we'll go settle this outside" and then proceeded to beat the **** out of a superior officer. I remember him telling me that 30 days in the brig on bread and water was not a fun experience.

An old friend offered me this early Stanley aluminum canteen that he said was his mother’s. She brought it along when camping and used it for a bed warmer. I couldn’t figure out what I would do with it but I took some pictures. The cap reminded me of a WW1 military canteen.

Picked up this tube of Radiator Cement today at the flea. Permatex goes way back to 1915 in Sheepshead Bay, NY, but this is from a later era (probably 40's) when it belonged to Harcord.

One of my New Year's Resolutions for 2020 is to finish the many projects I have conceived and not started or started and not finished. And I am beginning with this...
