Your avatar brought back memories. My buddy bought a Metrinch set from Sears in the late 90s/early 2000s. We put that set to good use. Never actually got to try it on rounded nuts though. I do remember the sockets getting stuck on nuts sometimes. As a matter of fact that Sears store just closed it's doors last month.

Yep, my dad bought the 62 piece Metrinch at Sears around that time on clearance, we used it for a lot of stuff it was super convenient because there were still a lot of mixed metric and standard on cars of that era so you basically just took the one that fit and that was that. My dad bought my son the 76 piece a few years ago at Christmas, I’ve since got the 71 piece one. The design does work and it’s a shame they cost so much. The original patent expired but they got some other design patent which I think is due up this year, maybe knockoffs will appear. The imitations up until now have never been as good. I know the design has been knocked off overseas where the patent is expired but I was never able to get anyone to ship one to the US even as a one off. The largest issues With the design are the slop they have which has largely been remedied now if you use them with 90 tooth ratchets and they do sometimes get stuck. Usually if something is really seized once I get it free I reverse it so the socket doesn’t get stuck then remove the nut. The sockets themselves are very hard to break because the wall is thicker due to the way it grabs a nut.

They actually put a video up on YouTube last month so I wonder if they’re gonna do a relaunch to try and get another cash grab with the patent.

Oh, now that you mentioned it, I do remember having to deal with the slop in tight spaces & there were no fine tooth ratchets back then like we have today. We worked mainly on imports though so never had to deal with imperial but that was one of the reasons why my buddy purchased the set.

Oh interesting, I had no idea they were still around. I just assumed they went out of business. Never really head anything about Metrinch since those days. I'll have to check em out (just out of curiosity).

What’s the torque range on that qjr217?

Another guy has a wrench that says “qjr2117” and “series b” (in different places) on the ratchet and it goes 5 to 200. I’m really envying it because it covers the range I need for doing injector work better than my gearwrench does.
I’m trying to track one down and my ebay searches have been fruitless.
I’m trying to find people thay know anything about them.

Nice range on that one. The 217C is a 40-200 in-lb wrench. What’s the range you need? Some newer Snap on and CDI wrenches have 20-150 and 30-250 ranges.

I think people overlook that some stubbies are meant to be a stubby version of a regular wrench for high torque application in a limited reach environment. Others aren't really stubbies, but more of limited access wrenches in hopes they don't break before the bolt is loosened. Think large size ignition wrenches.

I expected them to be as thick as my regular wrenches. Not complaining though, they feel solid. I like it.

Halfords appears to be a UK brand. I wouldn’t say it’s “cheap” at £45 for an 18 piece impact set which is like $60 or so, it's at least as expensive as Sears charges for theirs (or at least approximately since they don’t have any 18 piece sets at Sears that I’ve seen).

One thing I’ll give the Craftsman is they are sufficient for the price (otherwise I wouldn’t have just blown $200 in points on a set). They’ll hold up well for most use. Most of the standard sizes will be easy to get warranty replacement on it’s only the weird stuff like the old specialty impact set which I believe is discontinued that you may have issues getting replacements for, but then again they were so cheap when they were getting rid of them I’m not sure it matters.

It’s not uncommon to see miss stamping of stuff coming out of the same factory though. I’ve run into other brands like that.

Halford's is a big box store that sells automotive tat and bicycles mostly, they also have an automotive tool range that is cheap and gets the job done, its quite well liked by much of the diy market (I think largely due to their warranty) some of it may be quite good, it is probably all Asian sourced nowadays and I'm sure it all available in the USA with another name on it. Years ago it was British stuff, made by Bedford.

I bought a boat two years ago. It was the first time I needed a timing light since I can remember. Had to buy one on the fly at an Advance Auto. Weird when you step back in time and have to dig up that old knowledge and try to put it to use again. I need to get a classic car again.

:thumbup:My sons say that I am old school and I take that as a compliment, too many times I have seen techs now don't know what to do with old vehicles and equipment. :lol_hitti

I still have my original Snap-on QJR217 (Series B is shown at the top of the wrench, not near the model number). It's an Inch Pound torque wrench with a 3/8" anvil and a torque range of 10-200 inch/pounds. At the time it was the ultra small version that still had 3/8". I had it completely rebuilt by Snap-on in the 90s, so it's still new.

I bought it the same time I bought my QJR-3200 1/2" torque wrench (to 200 ft/lbs). They're late 70's models. You can tell that because the handles are blue. They went to silver handles in the early 80s.

Fantastic torque wrenches. Perfectly accurate, even after all these years. I never felt the need to replace them. Instead I added a QJR-2100D in the 80s, and then an ATECH3FR250B a while ago.

Highly recommend any Snap-on torque wrenches, but in particular any of the click types with the older style locking mechanisms. The newer style that requires two hands to operate just annoys me to no end.

Had Christmas at my parent's house today. I got this out of the gift exchange. Cman 22 pc kit.

After opening it up and looking at it, I found the tool tray comes out.

Making more room for more stuff in the case. I cut down a socket rail and added a 6" 3/8 drive extension.

I'll be adding a few more items, probably SAE 1/4 drive stuff to the case. It's going to live in a tote that I take with me when I go do some DIY work. Not going to hurt to have some sockets in there.

My Tekton order arrived today. My first Tekton ratchet- 3/8" bent handle, 6-1 screwdriver, bungees and some swag. Also grabbed a 6 mm Proxxon wrench to round out my mismatched set of orphan wrenches.

I am jealous as I did not get bumper stickers on my last order

I ordered them but they were something like 25% off at one point before Christmas. They were around $2 each I think. I actually forgot I had them in my cart for a few weeks when I placed the order

The local hardware store had their 10%off everything sale. These 2 sets followed me home: SK 1/4 inch drive 13pc metric set and their 1/2in. drive 10pc metric deep impact "flex" sockets.

I had no metric 1/2 drive sockets other than 8 or 9 21mm and bigger impacts. Been wanting a set for awhile now...not sure about the flex thing but they sure are machined really nice and look quality. $90 for a set of ten...not too bad...individually, they are $13-15 bucks.

Happy new year!

YMMV clearance deals from Lowes
$4.98 each

View media item 99733

Just went & got me one. Thanks! First Lowes didn't have any. Second Lowes had a bunch of them.

I only wanted the little ones. I had the green Stanley set, very first day I used one of the small ones my buddy layed his Skill saw down on it as it was still spinning & destroyed the thing.

Needed one more of the Mobile Base, this will be my thrid one. Went to HF today for their 25% off sale. I knew the coupon wouldn't work cause it's a Central Machinery brand & I checked online. Last one I bought was Labor Day 25% & the coupon worked fine. Sure enough the coupon wouldn't work even though the one I specifically brought didn't say Central Machinery on it.

Luckily it was the store manager that checked me out. Kindly told him the coupon didn't say CM & that it worked last time, he told me he'd take care of it & gave me the 25% off as "customer satisfaction". So be nice to your friendly HF cashier & they may just hook you up!

That is a sharp box luv that green.

HF is really weird with that color. On the sale tags you take to the register it says green. Online it says green. On the box it says lime.
Oh well I love it. Good quality for the price and for my DIY stuff.

Crescent NP11 nail puller pliers.

IMG-2222.jpg

They work very well on nails that are protruding enough but are useless on nails that are flush or stick out less than about 3mm.

Unable to grip the nail or staples in these pics.

IMG-2214.jpg

IMG-2216.jpg

I think this is because the teeth don't start at the tips of the jaws.

IMG-2230.jpg

Pliers normally have teeth on the jaw tips so they can grab right at the tips.
