thats why i hate traveling, staying in hotels or airbnbs. Feel like someone planted a camera somewhere. But news for them, just gonna catch a fat mexican farting, picking his nose and snoring.

I am sure there is someone somewhere who likes some footage of a fat mexican farting, picking his nose and snoring.

I have one of these nice aluminum server racks my old job was throwing out. There are tapped holes every 1" or so. Aside from using it as is does anyone have any ideas on what I could do with the sections of metal for storage? I don't really want to chop it up unless necessary. The c-channel sections are pretty beefy.

There have been some other threads where people have made small parts cabinets out of server racks. I don't see why these wouldn't work, but you're going to want to attach them to the floor.

Stem casters to make it mobile. Sandwich the c-channel in either pegboard or plywood and have a rolling tool stand.

Tons of drawer and shelf options out there to fit 19" racks. Or sell them and use the money to put towards other storage solutions.

I have 3 drawers sitting in my garage that fit 19" racks.

Thanks for the input guys. Selling might make sense but I see some on Craigslist for only $50. I will keep an eye out for used rack shelves.

I didn't look through every post so sorry if it's a repeat but I made some shelves out of rain gutter to hold paint cans. Works great and things don't fall off when the doors slam shut on the cabinet. Other nice thing is they cost about $4 each and come in any length you need.

Brilliant! I really like the 'built in' drip tray feature. I recently had a container of oil leak on the shelf in my shed. The oil ran down the backside of the wall sheathing, down the face of the cinder block stem wall and out into my yard. Is it not bad enough all of my cars leak, even my shed has oil leaks?! :spit:

Wanted a vintage look vs. traditional pegboard for hanging pipe/adjustable wrenches.
Repurposed an old saw blade and battery hold-down hooks.
Being heavy and sharp went with a french cleat mounting system.
Solid wall stud fastening w/blade connecting securely on first attempt.

Man, I would never be able to work at that bench! All I would be able to do would be sit and admire how great it looks! What is the story on those lights? Are they antiques you restored?

I have discovered Slat Wall as used in Retail Clothing Stores, the places that sell it have a great selection of attachments.

[emoji106]. Yes and easy to make your own custom hangers also.

Thanks guys. Pretty happy with how it all turned out. Had the idea for awhile, just had to hunt for all the pieces. The lights are 1920's-30's adjustable lights that adjust forward/aft,side/side, up/down.

They were picked from an old machine shop in Milwaukee.
When I got them, were layered with lots of dirt/grease/gunk. When cleaned there was a original patina/paint still left. New period wiring and cleaned the original lamp sockets. The electrical sockets are industrial locking type and original.
Have a 3rd lamp that will get mounted to a vise stand in the next week or two when I can fab up a vise stand/lamp base metal bracket.
I'll take a few more close up photos of the lamp pair and post on one of the lighting thread/section this weekend.

Earlier in this thread I made some overhead hangers for an electrical weed wacker and pole chain saw. In those posts (here and here) I mentioned that I had overhead storage on a couple of 2 X 4s which doesn't sound that great but in reality was worse. The 2 X 4s were mounted flat (the weaker way) and were not really fresh lumber but pieces of an old play swing set that had several years of outdoor usage on them. One end was sitting on boards lagged to the wall and the other end was supported by pipe flanges lagged through to the overhead joists. The down pipe went through a hole in the 2 X 4 and a flange is mounted under the wood. Worked well for years but was bowing pretty well and since I wanted to put more stuff overhead it was long past time to beef it up. Since I park motorcycles underneath, it silently nagged at me for years.

I haven't used strut before so I may have not done it correctly, so for you that know please speak up about my errors. I do like the stuff even if I'm not sure if I bolted it up the best way. I purchased 5 lengths of the green Superstrut from HD. I bolted two pairs back to back with a 1.5" stagger. I put the end on top of the 2X4 lagged to the wall and then went up into the attic and put a couple of 20" pieces back to back with a .5" threaded rod dropped down through the drywall and used that to support the other end. The attic pieces are sitting on top of some scrap steel that I put on top of the joists to keep the ends of the strut from sinking into the wood. The strut is just slightly thicker than the 2 X 4 so it completely removed the load from the wood, and now the only thing the 2 X 4s are holding is one LED filled lightweight light fixture each. Finally doing this has taken a weight off my mind as well as the 2 X 4s. (I know many of you are going to want to tell me how running romex and extension cords under the ceiling is not to code etc etc....and I will address my hodgepodge electrical/lighting issues at some point. I hate working with BX and I actually think the romex is safer under the ceiling than it is above it since attic storage rearrangement and occasional rodents can be quite abrasive. Since it's all LED lighting there is only 315 watts on the whole thing and around 615 total watts when the two ceiling mounted fans are running on high speed. )

A lot of cool ideas for wall mounted tools and equipment here. However, cool ideas too often morph into covering all available wall space, trying to hang everything on them which ends in a mess of disorganization. Just because a neat idea to store pneumatic tools or wrenches on the wall looks great doesn't mean it will look good to mount everything you own on your walls. I'll get flack for this opinion, I'm sure. Some of the shop photos shown here really look like an attempt to organize turned into pure chaos.

In some cases people have too much stuff for the space for unforeseen reasons, move due to work, financial crisis etc. I try not to judge because I have plenty of space and I am very unorganized so I’m at the other side of the spectrum...

Hey Glen, I resemble that remark! :lol_hitti

I suppose I could get all offended that you posted that right after my post, but when I look at my photos I can see how they might have inspired it especially the last photo I put up. I've mentioned before that there are those that like everything tucked away in drawers and cabinets and others (like me) that like the cluttered 10 lbs in a 5 lb bag look. By necessity I'm moving from hanging everything up on the wall to putting up shelves here and there and then making a place on the sides of the shelves to hang stuff. I too have seen where it appears that every tool owned is on the wall. I try to just keep tools that are frequently used hanging up and the rarely used ones are tucked away. One of my problems is that sometimes out of sight is out of mind. So I hang up too much stuff that I'm afraid I'll not be able to find if I tuck it away in a drawer or the back of a cabinet. A problem I'm working on. I either need more space (not going to happen) or better organization. I'll admit that my Blivet garage is messy looking, and I'll also admit that I kinda like it like that.
When looking through the garage gallery here, I notice the fine looking clean garages and I glance at them and quickly move on to the crammed every inch of space utilized shop/garages and study the photos of the latter. So yes, your point is well taken that some just hang everything they have on the wall and maybe it works for them. It did for me at first, but then I started from a place most never get to, so my current chaos is actually well organized by comparison and it is evolving to less stuff on the walls and more hanging from rolling carts and the side of shelving units. I actually had to hang a TV from the ceiling because there is no wall space to mount it.

So no Glen, you'll get no flak (nor flack) from me. I think your cautionary words should be in the back of our minds whenever we decide to hang stuff up.

fartymarty,

I was not specifically referring to your post and I apologize if you took it that way. I was talking about a number of photos on this thread and numerous others on other threads showing cluttered workspaces with everything the owner has mounted on the walls.

I think what I was trying to convey is that, in my opinion, a neat and tidy work place produces neat and tidy work and that one should strive to that goal if possible. On the other hand, some folks just feel more comfortable working in chaos and I need to be more understandable in that regard. Also, some guys just have so much stuff they fill all their drawers, shelves, available floor space and walls. To those, I suggest some thought about what is really necessary. One post here has twelve ball pein hammers hanging on the wall. Why would anyone need twelve of the same basic hammer and all neatly hung on the wall?

When I see an overly cluttered shop, I tend to think the owner might be on track as a hoarder and that is a mental disease, not someone who runs an organized workplace.

Different strokes for different folks and I should be more understanding of that.....even if my preference is to have a neat work place with everything possible out of sight.

I thought of your post when I walked into my shop, as I stepped over tools, various pieces of wood and other ****. It made me laugh.

I will never post a pic of my little slice of heaven, I'm not brave enough for that :lol_hitti

Glen, you are probably right on all counts. I aspire to a neat and tidy work place but it eludes me. Not having the money to buy tools in my youth means I held on to everything, regardless of quality or need. A partial cure for the clutter was to hide it in shallow (7.5-inch) cabinets. I still have battery tools and pneumatic tools in PVC sleeves in plain sight but they take enormous amounts of cabinet or drawer space. It's a work in progress and I'm only 75 so there's still time.

No apology needed Glen.:thumbup: Still, I think my last photo might have inspired you subconsciously whether you realize it or not. :)

Regardless of the reasons for some of our messy garages (In my case I'm expecting the garage to do everything: Metal work; wood work; home repair; welding learning center; entertainment center {while working}; park and maintain 4 motorcycles; temporary storage for stuff waiting to go up into the attic; license plate display; misc. signage display; and now even a place to temporarily place packages to self decontaminate for a few days waiting for the invisible virus to die off :wtf: :headscrat ) ....yes regardless for the reasons (including ball peen hammer collections), your words still serve us in the back of our minds if we listen to them every time we go to hang something new up on the wall and reevaluate what we already have hanging there. Personally I'm thanking you for providing them, even if you just might be the person most likely to walk into my garage and just say "NO" and turn and leave. :lol_hitti:lol_hitti

Thanks

I saved it from the dumpster. And NO, not the next day when I returned to the scene of the crime...[emoji23]
