Changed an alternator on our Jeep Liberty the other night in the dark and smacked a knuckle when one of the bolts broke loose somehow flung my 1/4" drive 13mm socket off the end of my ratchet (non-QR). I heard it hit somewhere in the engine compartment but didn't hear it hit the ground. Looked all over can't find it. Luckily 13mm is in that range where I have it in 3/8 and 1/2 so I was able to finish swapping out the alternator, just glad it wasn't some size that i only had one of.

Oh it’ll come bouncing out someplace. They usually do.

Just keep a drain bucket of antifreeze under the vehicle and you will always find anything you drop in it ....

I lost a 7mm koken from a nice set years back, ordered another as couldn't find it in truck bay or work area, got my new socket and found original lost one few weeks later . Not lost anything in years. left a astro light in bottom of door on a subaru doing a window motor but just remember before popped door card on fully .
Working in a shop way easier than shadetree style, once going mobile you got be really organised or gets expensive quick ...

I was doing the brakes on one of my cars not to long ago and lost the caliper turn in tool, just the adapter, spent an hour looking for it, finally gave up and started putting my tools away. The missing tool ended up attached to the magnet on my M12 light that I was using.

I was doing front wheel bearings on a neighbors suv and afterwards I couldn’t find my BRAUN magnetic light. Yup! Left it attached to a front control arm. He check a few hundred miles later but it was long gone.

I'm sure a lucky driver behind you, who probably needed a new windshield anyways, on the freeway will appreciate your socket. :)

Meh. It happens. I tend to lose them doing interior work under seats and carpet only to be discovered years later.

It happens

I find steering racks are where all my tools seem to fall to and my hand usually turns into a greasy mess by the time I get my tool back.

I did the same thing with one of my magnetic LED trouble lights. My biggest complaint with the LED versions is they just turn off with no warning. I left mine under a friends pickup evidently because it was still there the next time it was on the lift!

The black plastic of the light blends in with the under body when it shuts off I can hardly see it.
