I couldn't find a preexisting useful thread for this material, but I thought some people might enjoy seeing some of the original packaging that some of these tools come out of, as well as some interesting company names. This was all in a recent tool box I purchased online.

Very nice you could write up some very nice stories just from those products; Very nice indeed.:thumbup::beer:

Offering compelling histories on these items isn't my strong suit, Woody, but I do like the names of the companies that were operating here in Detroit. Like Detroiters.....very direct, and to the point..... Like the Tuff-Hard Corporation.

They were awarded a patent on behalf of their President & GM, Frederick A. Endress for their heat-treating processes, that allowed them to compared their Moly Steel alloys as a functional equal to Tungsten.

They were located at the corner of Caniff Ave & Mound Rd, which would have been a very strategic location, particularly if they were doing business with Chrysler, as they would have been almost surrounded by their plants there at one point.

That's a peach of a pair of pliers, Don! But I must confess that I'd see it as some riddle as to how they fit into that box! (i'd reckon it has to do with disconnecting the spring?)

Nah. You just squeeze them and they slide right in. The spring isn't all that strong so the handles just gently push on the sides of the box. Here is a Craftsman Crown corner clamp set with instructions.

I have a large tube of that CMD center point lube. It's a great EP lube, and I use it on puller screws.

Here are a couple more Craftsman Crown items. I like buying tools that I see with their original packaging.

Nice!
Even though these Vise Grips weren’t new, the previous owner stored them in the original box.

Thanks, Mr. D. Are you headed to the EC estate sale Friday morning? Looks to be about 5 minutes from your house!
A fellow collector in Wales alerted me to this Schroeder TPG in the WW2 Navy NAF catalog and I found one still in the box on eBay.

That Peterson logo on the instructions would make a nice logo sign. I have scanned a few things like that and manipulated it in Photoshop to print my own poster art.

Here is a Par-X in an original box. This dates to the 70's probably late 70's.

The Crescent wrench is probably 50's or 60's but I honestly don't know.

At 65 cents each, that represents the pay for about one hour’s work for most blue collar workers back then.

HD has essentially the same wrench now for $11

Nice stuff! I reckon the machinist's stuff is more likely to have been kept in original boxes as they worked more "indoors", and generally kept a cleaner environment about them.

Perhaps less likely to have dropped a box and then accidentally stepped on it on a greasy floor, during the execution of their job.

Yes, many machinists keep their tools in the original boxes.

Somewhat off topic:

For toy collectors, the original boxes are worth more than the toys. Mrs Danger used to have a regular customer who was a toy collector. She restored old and damaged boxes for him. She used the same skills as for restoring artwork. He loved her for it.

Early 1974 packing slip from "still in crate" lathe i bought couple years ago.

In the crate.

That. Is. Cool! FYI - Even the crate itself constitutes ephemera by the classic definition.

Thanks, BTW, the packing slip was in better shape than the paperwork packed in the accessories box. OPO opened it and left it open for the mice condo. OPO never uncrated it because it didn't come with the electric motor setup he thought he ordered. Sat in his barn till his estate auction. Packing slip was stapled to crate.

Pine ephemera.

I found this early Mayhew box over a year ago but misplaced it. Over time I found the long punches that I believe would have come in the box. On Monday the box turned up and I was able to unite the punches with the box.

The heater and box were in a dusty barn by a lake, so I'm happy the box protected its contents.

I'm only a little curious if a velvety shave is a clean shave......perhaps standards have changed over the years!

Velvety Smooth, I'm sure. It's a neat little gadget. The crank not only spins the strop, but after a couple of revolutions it automatically lifts the armature holding the blade and flips it over to do the next side. There's a little lever on the side that sequentially decreases the pressure on the strop in 4-5 stages after which, you're headed for velvet!
