Hot dawg heater

Finally getting tired of working in the cold and need a real heater. Wanted to go the radiant tube heater route but cant afford it. Started looking at the hanging furnace route.my pole building is 30x40x10. Wrapped with tyvek and R25 throughout .no concrete insulation other then vapor barrier


Obviously alot of factors, but do they run alot to hold temp?

How efficient are these style if i leave it at 45* or whatever a thermostat goes down to. I will need to set a separate lp tank, will 250gal be big enough to make it thru an iowa winter.

How noisy are they? We do have get togethers often out there.

Approximately What size btu would i need.

How often the gas-fired heaters run will solely be dependent on how well insulated your building is.

For comparison's sake, your shop is 12k cubic feet. My last shop was 16k cubic feet (34x34x14) but was a stick built building and very well insulated. I had a 75k btu gas-fired heater in mine and it worked very well keeping up even when outside temps were in the single digits to low teens. I would keep mine around 48-degrees when I wasn't there and when I arrived home from work I would bump the T-stat up to 60-degrees. By the time I ran into the house, changed, checked mail and messages and ran back out to get to work (usually about 15-minutes) it would be up to temp and holding at 60. Usually it would only kick on a few times each night during my time there (couple times per hour) unless it was really cold outside (single digits) when it may kick on 3-4 times per hour. It was sized properly to avoid short-cycling but I wouldn't have gone any larger in that size building.

I first had a Reznor 75k that I bought used and it worked perfectly and was nice and quiet. About 5 years before we sold the place I had to replace the gas valve and fan and about 2 years before we moved I replaced the unit with a Modine Hot Dawg 75k btu overhead heater. It worked similar to the Reznor as far as cycle times and such but I hated how noisy the Modine was. It sounded like a jet taking off and was difficult to either hear the radio or talk in the shop when it would come on.

Now in my 3k square foot shop (48k cubic feet) 50'x60'x16 I have a Reznor 150k btu gas-fired unit and I think it is actually more quiet than my previous Reznor 75k unit. It is the UDAT model (roof vented) and is so quiet I can even record video in the shop and barely detect it in the sound.

Just a comparison between the two because you asked about noise level. I can't assist you on the LP tank size as I have always ran NG units and have no comparison. As far as size you shouldn't need anything larger 75k and could possibly get by with 50k btu but I will wait for the HVAC experts to assist you with the calculations because I tend to oversize slightly.

I have the Hot Dawg 75K in a 30X40X10 with R19 walls and ceiling. Also no insulation under the concrete. I keep it set at 50 degrees 24/7. I have a single 100 gallon tank. I am in my garage every weekend and set it to 68, sometimes both days, for any where up to 8 hours.

In November, I installed a Sensi WiFi thermostat that tracks usage. This was after I got the tank filled, so these usage hours and consumption are not based on a full tank. I have about 30% left and it ran 120 hours to date. I wish I knew what % I had when i installed the thermostat to be more accurate. I usually get my tank filled once in the beginning of the season, and then once around the end of January.

As for the sound, yes you can hear it, but it does not interfere with a conversation right under it. We also have several events in the garage. It's not that loud and with warm bodies in there is runs very little. I usually kick it up in the early AM when we have friends over so it warms everything, including the floor up. I have found this to help maintain.

Take a look at the 2 stage and separate combustion chamber options. The 2 stage will allow a faster heat up time when there is a greater variation from set temp to room temp. When the temp range is closer it burns less gas to maintain. The separate combustion chamber pulls in outside air for combustion vs using the inside air for combustion. This is critical is you have flammables (gas, fumes, etc) in the garage.

I’ve had on in a 500 sugared foot shop for 15 years. They work Great. Up out of the way . Mine is an HD45. Just right for my small shop. I can work with my coat off any time.
You of course will need the bigger unit. Very import to size it correctly. Too small and it won’t shutoff. They drink fuel like that. Figure your BTU load for your building. And buy one. I think they are great.

The distance they will throw heated air is listed in the specs for each unit. Larger units will push it further. I have a 45k in a 24x22 and yes, you can feel the airflow. A 125k in a 36x48 has different results. You cannot feel the flow at the far end. Both units work extremely well at heating the space. The larger building has 4 ceiling fans that help to keep the hot air off the ceiling.

My 75K Hot dawg can be felt strong on the opposite wall which is 30 feet away. I also have 2 ceiling fans which help move the warm air around.

Think electronic ignition is a standard feature.........pilots lights are thing of the past.

In my uninsulated 24 x 40, I have a 75K HotDawg that is "can't hear the radio when it kicks on" loud. But it heats great, so well I'm thinking of downsizing to a 45K after I insulate.

It was -5 this morning with no heat on overnight in the garage. I turned in on at 8AM, and was working in 45 degrees at 9AM. By 10AM I had my jacket off.

At 60, I'd be opening the door.

It's older, but identical to the ones at the store. I like quiet so I'm probably not your guy on this. I also have the unit placed right over my work bench, another mistake, so maybe away from the action I'd be OK.
That said, it is wonderful having heat in a garage, especially when its below 0.

Gotcha, ya id be mounting it at opposite corner of my building blowing back to my main area. I definitely appreciate quiet tho. Especially having get togethers quiet often out there (pool table, bar, dart board) its kind of the man cave

You'll be fine. Those units throw a lot of heat, and once you warm it up, it'll be off more than it's on.

BTW, if you do shop Menards, I'd wait til the next 11% sale. They just had the 50K under $320 with 11% off. I believe the 80K was around $380.

Checked at tractor supply today. The 80k btu bug maxx was on sale for 399, but sold out. Think i may go that route.

Can you use a different t stat then the one that is supplied with the unit?

I have the Modine Hot Dawg 75K in my barn workshop and it "throws" the heat very well. I have it mounted from the ceiling over in one corner and angled so that it aims across the room diagonally. The room is 10X36x48 and it easily pushes the air to the other end no problem. I think it is a little noisy when the fan kicks on but not too bad. I bet the Mr Heater will be about the same.
