Story time!

I had that Blackhawk bottom roller once. Original used condition. I went to buy a couple bench grinders on cl. His garage has these big things covered with blankets/sheets.

I'm not paying much attention to them, I'm here for tools. We get to bs'ing. We asks if I want the Blackhawk which was not listed. How much? $40. So that was a no brainer.

As we're loading me up the subject of the big things covered in blankets comes up. He unveils one and,..... they're ******* caskets!!!

He made very, very basic budget caskets as a side gig to utilize his woodworking skills and make it produce a little cash as well. Eventually I sold the Blackhawk for $350 to some lady who wanted it in her kitchen. I want my Blackhawk back. The end.

1st post/brand new member . . . Hopefully one of you knowledgeable folks can steer me in the right direction.

I inherited this very late 60's- early 70's era gray & red Craftsman 10 drawer tool box. From what I learned, it's the top half of rollaway and I've spent the better part of the day researching this thing to try and find a model number, etc. Nada!

Since I'm new to the forum, I'm restricted from submitting any pictures, but the toolbox has the metal handles (not recessed), and the craftsman badge is silver with black relief and the inverted triangle style logo.

Anyone have any ideas to help me find a good lock replacement. I plan to clean it up and use it either way, but I'm interested in learning more about what I'm working with.

Thanks guys!

Hello and welcome! You have an early model based on the side handles and the reinforced top lid. Those were introduced in 1961 and continued on until 1976 with a few changes. May I ask why you need a new lock? You should be able to take the cylinder to a locksmith and they can make a key. Please see the link below for a whole thread dedicated to the craftsman red and grey models!

I have that same tool box which is supposed to be a KR-65A but since mine doesn't have a draw latch according to Snap-on catalogs it puts it like pre - 1950. No code or marking of any kind on my box though that I can see.
Does it have a triangular or oval sticker? Mine has an oval sticker, making it a K65A and prewar. If you check the collecting Snap-on site, you can usually pin it down with the drawer dividers and markings.

If you look inside the top compartment on the front left side of the "floor" you should see a date stamp. May have to use some WD40 and fine steel wool with just the right light to be able to see it. Ditto what Smoke said about taking the lock to a locksmith for keys. Nice chest and welcome aboard.

Mine has the triangular sticker which I believe makes it newer than yours with the oval sticker. Thanks for the heads up, I will check out the Collecting Snap-On catalogs a little closer.

Ha! What numb nuts put that thing together??? I'd say that's about 90 percent accurate. I've found some few exceptions, specifically it seems whenever there was a change in the catalogs, that change went into effect sometime during the previous year. I'd say that'll get anybody pretty close though. Handy for trying to date one from a photo alone.

I picked up this Western Auto box with a 1980 date this week. I didn't look at it too closely when I bought it from an Estate Sale as it was complete and priced at $85. I spent some time cleaning it up this morning to resell and the more I cleaned the nicer it got. Not sure I want to sell it now. Worst damage is something got spilled down the end of it; was able to remove most but there are still some stains. The top had a few of those same stains and 40 years or dust. I scrubbed it down pretty hard taking a bit of the paint with it, then hit it with a polish and a quick wax of the whole exterior. The inside is very clean as the prior owner had some thick foam in the drawers as liners. Original top tray, keys, and socket organizer. The pulls could use some more cleaning, but I stopped for now. Might have to come up with a place in the basement now.... :headscrat

You don’t see that Huot middle box very often, especially in blue/silver.

Nice pick-up on that box, and at $85 and the great shape it is in you did very well  , It has the same lay-out as one of my Penn-Crafts, not all that heavily built tool boxes probably but well worth $85. I believe made by Waterloo.

That style with the latch on the front and snapon stamped on lid is a bit later. Also has fewer dividers than earlier ones. Maybe has a date stamp

I'm curious as I just picked one up recently. Mine is 1959.

Earliest version, 39 40, had oval decal in front. Then a short lived variant with triangle decal in front, then on top. Finally they came up with the latch in front and snap on stamped on lid.

Thanks for all of the helpful responses! I knew I'd found the right place. The model number markings were there - right where they are supposed to be after a more thorough look through. Now I just have to figure out what it says! It's a super light stamping and I'm trying to read it upside down, etc. Anyway, will probably just need to re-key the lock, clean it up and I'm all set. Great forum and several helpful responses. Thanks again, group!

Wow, that's a beauty. I would not be able to force myself to sell a Western Auto box that's in such great condition. Keep in mind that these comments are coming from a guy that hates tool boxes with storage compartments in the bottom.

Heres mine, probably my favorite $1 find.

I keep my misc. 9/32"s tooling in it. I found it at a garage sale in Stockton, on the south side. Nothing else there, and it was soaking a gas and old oil. I wasn't even sure it was Snap-on at first. I did replace the lock, as it had no key and I needed some way to keep it closed.

You guys have posted some amazing boxes on this thread recently.

The restored white Blackhawk is really cool. I love the non-traditional color.

I've always wanted a KR-65A, but never ran across one at an affordable price. Yes, I would pay more than a dollar for one. :bounce:

My daughter would kill for that Huot center box. She has both the top and bottom boxes that go with it and has them overstuffed with tools. I posted pics of her Huot boxes in this thread a few years ago. I have since done a light restoration on them.

Dated '79 & '80. Bought new by me. Full of mostly old Snappy stuff. Still working out of it everyday. A few dings and bumps, but otherwise in pretty decent shape. I try to take care of my stuff since obviously I've bought it for life.

Maybe have it buried with me as well.
That is beautiful! I've got the bottom two pieces 557 and 547 and been keeping watch for a 537 top box.

So far the ones I've seen have been too far away, a basket case, or very very expensive.

Really like the look of that stack.

The lock is an LL 77. Replacement keys are readily available on eBay. I've used this locksmith many times with great success. Good luck!

I picked up this early Kennedy 520 (I think) yesterday. The box has been crudely spray bombed and seems beat to hell but I saw enough of its contents in the ad to temp me. There was some junk and some cool finds. Unfortunately, owners marks are all over the tools. Almost complete S-K Tools 1/4 drive socket set as well as parts of a 3/8 drive set. A couple of miscellaneous Plomb, Husky, Craftsman and (I believe) Brazil sockets mixed in for good measure as well.

Nice find. I tend toward a "box and contents" affliction myself.

Wondering if anyone can offer up identification for this label I'm seeing on a vintage (30s through early 50s?) tool box. It's on an auction near me and thinking I can get it cheap. Sorry about the poor detail. it's the best I can muster at the moment.
