Yesterday was day one - which meant it was time for some digging.

Not a ton to report beyond the normal stuff - grass is torn to bits - dirt everywhere - and a couple Bobcats in the backyard.

They got most of the footings dug, save for one portion of the shed. They came back briefly this morning to put the lumber in place for the footings pour - which is scheduled for Thursday.

But to fully document the magical nature of Day 1, here are a few shots.

Not sure how I've missed this thread up until now...nice cars, and looks like a great garage project. :) I have an '88 325iX and an '86 M535i myself.

Gotta love drone shots on this kind of thread!

I bought the drone specifically to document the process. It's been fun to see the property and project from a different perspective.

My thoughts exactly. Taking it to another level. Pun intended.

Indeed! By the way - your thread has me wanting an E46! Last thing I need right now.

Two great cars! My E28 is off having a manual swap done and I miss it. Unfortunately, with the cost of the garage project becoming really real now, I'll need to liquidate a few cars. The M Coupe, E30 Convertible and the E34 M5 are likely on the chopping block, as much as that hurts to admit.

Lots of action this morning - huge pile of dirt just got dropped in my driveway- I assume for back fill purposes - or building up the side drive. Forms are being finished for the footer pour tomorrow. I'll get some updated shots later today.

Only update for the day is that there is no update. Footings have been poured and they were scheduled to do the slab pour last week, but the pump truck was unavailable. We moved the pour to Tuesday this week, but the weather has decided to take a turn. The whole week will be too cold to pour, so we're slotting the pour for next Monday. I'm so eager to get that slab done - just so the rest of the work can continue.

I've also listed the first two of the fleet to go - my '99 M Coupe (Facebook link) and my '88 E30 Convertible (R3v Limited Link). They are the two I want to see go the least - but the cash call for the garage is coming.

Framer is scheduled for mid-November now. Everything is inching backward a bit.

The goal now is to be out of my rental garage by mid-February. We shall see!

Oddly enough, I had stumbled across your e30 FS listing on r3vlimited while I was perusing what was available just this morning (I'm always looking..you never know when a really good deal might hit).

GLWS on both cars. ***** you need to sell either of them, but as you said, cash call is coming!

I’d rather have a nice garage than the cars unless one has such sentimental value you cannot sell it. You can always buy more cars and will be happier working on them in the new garage.

I look everyday too - you never know, right? Even when I'm selling four like I am now, I'm always on the hunt for something interesting. My wife is very understanding.

I generally agree with this sentiment - and I'm getting there. The M Coupe was on my never-sell list - but when it comes down to it, I'd rather have the project done in a way that doesn't involve a bunch of debt.

When the garage is done, it'll still have four occupants. '78 911 Targa, '88 535is, '91 850, '72 F250 and the F31 Daily. Plenty of variety there.

Pretty cool!

I currently drive a '95 5401/6, black with a parchment interior.

I had a '93 Calypso M5, but a hail storm pretty much took care of it. It had that gray interior (forget what it's called). Only part I didn't like. Man, it gets dirty easy.

After a few stops and starts with the concrete work, it's finally just about done. We've had a couple nice days in a row so they were able to get it fully poured.

I'll have a more thorough update when they pull the forms off, but here it is in the current state:

From the current garage (a total pit right now since I lost my shed). This gives my first view of just how much garage I'll have, including the existing.

And then patio side to the back:

This is the shot of where the shed will be - which I'm now excited about the size. Was concerned it may not be big enough to be useful.

IMG_1883.jpg

IMG_1884.jpg

IMG_1885.jpg

I also went ProLighting.com and got a lighting layout done for the new and existing garages. I'll be doing 9 of these fixtures in the new, and 6 in the existing. Should be a lot of light.

Framer should be available in a couple weeks to start - wish it were sooner. More as it happens!

Well ... I think the framing is set to start tomorrow! It was supposed to start this coming Monday, but the GC said "if the first batch of lumber arrives on Thursday, framing will start Friday". The lumber arrived this morning ... so my hopes are officially up.

The framer has said 10 days from start to finish - which also includes the framing work required to elevate the existing garage's ceiling. Can't wait to watch the daily process. Should be fun.

I ran out this evening to grab one more drone still before the framing begins. The slab has been done for about two weeks.

DJI_0001.JPG

Windows will arrive on Tuesday. I'm picking up the two exterior doors this weekend. Some basic space planning has started (though I wish I had some skill in SketchUp - as the layouts I've seen there are amazing).

The snowball is about to start rolling!

Framing IS starting today - but with the cold weather, they are going to start in the existing garage, working on the ceiling. I'm as pumped about the new ceiling height in the existing garage as I am about the new garage. Will update the thread later with progress shots.

Indeed! I did a rough calculation the other day - it'll be roughly 1500 total feet including the shed. More square footage than my first house.

Quick update on progress - there is no progress. Everyone showed up this morning and decided to work on the new space first so that I could move the contents of the current over to the new before they do the old garage ceiling. That meant they didn't have all the lumber, which meant everyone left. There is a chance the lumber arrives yet today and they come out to prep.

Start/Stop/Start/Stop.

We have walls!

Framers started yesterday morning and as of late this morning, most of the walls are in place. They built the outer gabled wall on the ground, cladded it with OSB and wrapped it before standing it up this morning. It is amazing what going vertical does for a space.

Here are the shots as of noon today.

I certainly have a lot to be thankful for this Thanksgiving. Framers spent two full days and one half day working on the garage and now I'm truly able to get a sense of space!

Windows and doors are on-site now, as is all the lumber required to get it dried in. Loving every step of the process.

Two more days of framing have put us in a great spot to have the framing done this week! Half of the roof is now decked and tied in to the existing roof.

The other half will get done tomorrow and they are hoping to start putting in the windows and doors tomorrow as well. Roofers will be here on Thursday to at least get down the underlayment. Electrician will do some preliminary work over the weekend.

This is moving swiftly now!

Being the techy guy I am, I already have two smart locks, a bunch of Casetta Wireless Lutron switches (I have about 30 in the house already), a couple smart controllers for the mini splits and all the speakers and Sonos components I'll be using for my AV setup.

I have to say - this is the first week it's felt "really real". I can't image how I'll feel come Friday - which is when the framer thinks they'll be completely done (siding, trim, existing garage ceiling, etc).

Oh - and I'm keeping my M Coupe. Drove it last night for the first time in about a month and fell in love again. Back on the "never-sell" list.

Progress shots from today below - as well as a recent shot of the Clownshoe.

Great project, and cars. I purchased a F30 330i, and was very underwhelmed by it's performance. SWMBO now drives it. and I have a diesel X5 (which I originally purchased for her), and a Porsche Cayman that I alternate driving to work in. Sometimes I also drive my TD5 Defender. Tough making decisions on which vehicle to drive.
Continue to update us on your progress.

Cheers,

Ken

Can't wait to see what you do with the interior.

My wife drove the diesel X5 before her current 40e X5 - I loved driving that thing. Great torque. I don't mind the F31's performance, because the gas mileage is great. If I want something quicker, I have options.

What year is your Cayman? I've seriously considered getting one once this project is done. Also - a TD5 Defender? Living life right!

Yes, the blue Clownshoe is a keeper. One of the framers went out to the street yesterday to snap some photos - he had never seen one in person. That was fun.

Siding arrived today and they have snapped lines for the entire garage. They are prepping the windows now. I think today is going to be a significant day of progress. I always love working from home, but today especially.

The diesel X5 is great on fuel. I work up on the Tablelands, and involves climbing a mountain road. Once up the range, it gets 3.5 - 5 litres per 100 k's.

The Cayman is a 2012 Base, so 2.9l flat 6. Not the most powerful, but lots of fun. Put 20,000 k's on it in 2 years.

Yes it is a TD5 Defender. Purchased new in 2005. Is my "get away" drive.

Keep us posted on your build.

Cheers,

Ken

Lots of progress in the last 9 days. Framing ended late last week. That means all siding, roof decking, windows - all wrapped up.

The roof went on this week - nicely tied to the existing.

Rough-in electrical for both the new garage and the existing garage is done. Service to the sub panel is going to be done this weekend to prepare for the inspection on Monday. Rough-in for the mini split is done as well.

The existing garage ceiling remnant framing is all gone - showing the new 12 foot ceilings (hint: it's amazing).

The schedule over the coming weeks - if it holds - is going to be crazy.

This weekend: Final rough-in electrical including the sub panel service run
Monday: Electrical, rough-in plumbing inspection
Tuesday-Friday: The insulation and drywall crew will be here (same crew for both)
Monday the 23rd: Glass garage door and shed roll-up door going in
Thursday the 26th: The high-lift conversion is to be done on our existing doors
Friday the 27th: Rock retaining wall installed for our side driveway expansion (parking spot on the side of the house)
The week of the 30th: finish electrical
The first week of January: final inspection and mini split install!
January 15th - epoxy floor install - he'd like me to heat the space for a week to normalize the concrete temps.
Week of January 20th: move in!

That means my lease can end at the end of January instead of needing to stay through the end of February. If we can hit all the deadlines, I'll be incredibly happy.

Now on the progress shots from today.

This last update got away from me really quick! I was hoping to do several incremental updates as progress happened, but that just didn't happen. Partly due to me playing a role in the project (painter, part-time electrician, cleaning crew, demo crew, etc.) and partly due to the rapid fire nature of the last few weeks.

From the first sheets of drywall being hung to today was less than 30 days - and that's with Christmas and the New Year's happening. It's been a whirlwind to say the least.

So what got done in the last 30 days?

* Insulation of both garages. The old garage got insulation in the new portion of the upper walls and blown in insulation in the ceiling.

IMG_2096.jpg
IMG_2097.jpg

* Drywall in both garages - including quite a bit of repair on the old garage walls - particularly where I had hung my FastTrack components.

IMG_2101.jpg
IMG_2105.jpg
IMG_2104.jpg
IMG_2118.jpg
IMG_2191.jpg
IMG_2190.jpg
IMG_2188.jpg
IMG_2186.jpg

* I hung the LED strip lights just as soon as I could in the old garage - mainly to get a sense of how bright it would be in the new garage. Six total fixtures in the old garage - perfectly bright.

IMG_2199.jpg
IMG_2200.jpg
IMG_2205.jpg
IMG_2197.jpg

* My vision for the space was not only a garage, but a second office. I've worked from home for 20+ years, so any change of pace from my normal home office is good - so I bought a Husky adjustable height worktable to serve as my new desk.

IMG_2204.jpg

* The garage door high-lift conversion was next - no more 2x4 temporary supports! This was easily the thing I was looking forward to the most, as not being able to park in the garage for about three weeks really sucked.

IMG_2203.jpg
IMG_2202.jpg

* The next day, the glass door and roll-up door went in. The glass door leads out to the patio so when the weather gets warmer, having flow between the patio and the garage will be awesome. And it can serve as a makeshift washing spot. The roll-up door leads to the shed, and I am far more excited about it than I thought I would be. The color matches the walls nearly perfectly and it keeps the cold from the non-insulated shed out of the garage pretty well.

IMG_2206.jpg

* We then moved on to trimming out the space and doing the final electrical work. Eight light bays in the new space - four on the angled portion of the ceiling. That amount of light definitely gives it the "showroom vibe"!

IMG_2214.jpg
IMG_2213.jpg
IMG_2212.jpg
IMG_2215.jpg

* Then it was quickly on to the mini split install. Not much to say about that other than how did I wait this long for a heated garage. The last week has been incredibly cold here, but you'd never know it. Going out to the garage used to be something to brace for - no longer.

IMG_2216.jpg

* And then ... the floor. I used the same Epoxy company that did the original garage a few years back. It looks fantastic and I love the durability of it all.

IMG_2223.jpg
IMG_2226.jpg
IMG_2221.jpg

* The Husky cabinets arrived at my local Home Depot on Friday - promptly picked them up, got them installed.

IMG_2225.jpg

* I filled them up with all my stuff this past weekend. We moved most of the cars over and then my brother came over to take some final shots.

The 4-post lift from my rental is getting moved to the house tomorrow (it'll go in the main garage on my side) and we still have the bathroom to finish.

I'm also going to install a central vac unit in the shed with a port on the garage wall to service the big garage. That all arrives tomorrow as well. Should be some interesting updates coming in the next week or so.

Thanks so much. It was your comment there that actually coerced me into sitting down the write the update!

Garage expansion and car selection are both top notch. Hats off to you!

Thanks Dubber - coming from you - considering the work you've done on all your iterations - means a lot.

One update I neglected to mention - a new addition to the fleet is coming on Thursday!

A '71 Jeep CJ5! My twin brother bought a CJ5 on our birthday last year (I bought an E36 M3 Convertible the same day) - and ever since, I've wanted to buy one. I've had a number of Jeeps over the years but this will be my first CJ5. With the lift coming tomorrow, I have to figure out which one goes up (and likely stored for the winter) to make room for the CJ.

That's an awesome use of space, I am hoping I can expand mine this summer for a 12x26 on the back which would allow me to put a lift in and maybe a set of doors in between.
