My new pickup of 4 bullets. Left to right: C1, 400S machinist, C2, 400 machinist pre 60s

The C2 is beastly, 12 oz can for scale reference

Looking at the local Craiglist, the prices put on vintage vises seems astronomical

$600+++

Are y'all getting deals that good or are they crazy?

Examples:

$2200 "shipyard" vise:
https://eastnc.craigslist.org/tls/d/new-bern-vice-foundry-shipyard-heavy/7036520724.html

Columbian 205 - $600:
https://eastnc.craigslist.org/tls/d/rocky-mount-columbian-visebigheavy/7031219181.html

Unknown - $750:
https://eastnc.craigslist.org/tls/d/goldsboro-giant-cast-iron-vise-opens/7037947456.html

Yost 33C - $700 (nicest cond. of the bunch):
https://eastnc.craigslist.org/tls/d/winterville-yost-33c-vise-5inch/7059507548.html

And then there's stuff like this older Craftsman 4" for $65:
https://eastnc.craigslist.org/tls/d/newport-vise/7046228175.html
(which I'd probably grab if it wasn't over 2.5 hours away...)

WWII Battleship Vice (Reed 3C)
https://sanantonio.craigslist.org/tls/d/austin-vintage-ww2-battleship-vice-in/7033264297.html

I contacted this one after the post had been up for 2 months and explained about sentimental value vs. actual value and offered $200. They said they sold it but, of course, the ad is still up...

M635, If the big Prentiss has 8'' jaws, it has to be a #186 or it only opens to 8''.---Below is pics of a Prentiss #185 with 7'' jaws and weighing 240lbs.---That would put the 186 at close to 300lbs.---But it looks like the big Prentiss has a weld across the side of the dynamic tower, and it appears one jaw is missing, plus the pipe jaws are gone.---So there is a lot of restoration to be done after that whopping price tag is met.

Honestly, I'm not interested in a vise that size - it just amazes me what folks around here generally seem to want. I like the idea of having a nice, beefy, vintage 5" one for use in my garage. I'll probably wind up with a Yost 750 Di - it's probably a better/more versatile fit anyway...

here's an ad from yesterday for a reasonably priced (asking $60) 5" simplex with bad pics. followed up within 30 minutes, thanks to a helpful heads up from Vin, and meet the owner today. Got the 43-S (4 3/4" jaws) along with another old blue vise that was tucked away in the corner of the utility shed. Both intact and turning but in obvious need of cleanup.

LoL - I decided to get off the train and ordered the Yost 750 Di

As much as I love the idea of vintage, I need to get to work ;)

I am guessing 4 1/2" based on the expanded wire diamonds being about 1" wide ?
Total lenght 18" It looks good other than the rust.

I just picked this vise up at an auction (surplus from an offshore / oilfield company called Seacor Marine). It was an online auction, and all I could see in the pictures was the 1765 and Made in the USA. It also has the numbers 111823 on the opposite side of the static jaw. I assumed it was a Wilton Tradesman.

When I picked it up today, I discovered that there is no name anywhere on the outside.

Did Wilton produce unbranded vises? It seems to have been painted at some point, so I suppose a name plate on the side might have come off. What do you all think?

Thanks in advanced7867803a4051bca77d9b0a0892b07d5.jpga80d25daab08a3662903b29f96cbbffa.jpgda80b6bb30642857caf21f5368c713c7.jpgd208c27fd18275173e8949d48d1ef312.jpg

That is a genuine Wilton Tradesman. With a little elbow polish, and a side sticker, that vise could be a eye popper Its nice

These were casted without a name since they were sold to snap on and other brands and would make it much easier to white label. Notice both stamps 17XX, the 65 refers to 6.5" jaw width etc.

for example:

Here is a pic of the 1745 I cleaned up and sold. I contacted Wilton and they sent me a new label at no charge.
As already said, Wilton sold those without labels so SnapOn and others could market them as their own.

After I painted it bright red and got the Wilton label, I realized that perhaps I should have labeled it SnapOn. I gave my buyer a can of Rustoleum Verde Green in case he grew tired of the red.

What is this?

I enhanced one of the photos.
That is indeed a Craftsman 5222
I’ve never seen one before. Certainly a rare bird.

I found this red one posted by scorelesssteve over 4 years ago in a different thread.

That’s definitely a rare vise you have there. I have the same one with a different model number.03abff2b15a592a1ab3ec3e46bf2b49c.jpg

... Had to go pick it up today after getting him to come down from $75 to only $25!

Joseph L. Ware Swivel Vise. This is a 4” model. Looks like although some people have mentioned it being a Canadian vice, and is listed as such on the GJ Vise spreadsheet, I was able to find a couple of old pages citing it as a product of Minneapolis/St. Paul Minnesota. (Which if true is very cool to me being a Minnesotan).

Aside from the unique U-shape, this vise is apparently cast-steel, wondering what people’s thoughts are on that vs. cast-iron?!

Anyways excited to own this rather unique Vise and get it restored and in working order.

Rileysan, you rarely see those Craftsman Combo's with the hexagon slide pop up.---But somehow Zoomie has wound up with 4 of them.

Filly, that is an unbelievable deal.---Those may be rarer than the afore mentioned Craftsman.---You scored big on that one.

Filly...Joseph L. Ware, was from Minneapolis, but contracted the mfg. of the vises to The James Smart Mfg. Co. of Canada. So if it was produced in Canada, is it an American or Canadian vise/vice?

Interesting design, I haven't had the pleasure of seeing one in the flesh yet.

Fierljeppen, Is it possible that all these bent bar Ware vises were manufactured by The James Smart Mfg. Co? Want to update the Spreadsheet if you or anyone else knows.

OH, you have my old vise that Royce got from me used on his awesome stand as your Avatar. Great image for sure. Love your Avatar's.

KMScott...I don't have any definitive information on the bent bar vises you're talking about.

You and Royce make a pretty damn good team. If I had half of MillScotts talent, I'd have a condo on the moon.

The 3 patents I have for Mr. Ware are: 673,228 of April 30, 1901; 745,746 of December 1, 1903; and 1,375,876 of April 26, 1921.

The last one appears to be for the vise you have.

I have one with 1 1/2 inch jaws that has "PAT'D 16 July 1901 cast in the side. I could find no Ware patent or any other vise patent for this date. Maybe I didn’t look in the right place.

That is a Canadian patent.

When downloaded from Canadian patent site, the patent is in .pdf form, but is a bit map image - too large a file to be uploaded.

Here is the URL to Google:
https://patents.google.com/patent/CA72266A/en?oq=ca72266

Here is the Canadian patent site URL:
https://www.ic.gc.ca/opic-cipo/cpd/...ry.html?type=number_search&tabs1Index=tabs1_1

Click on documents and download.

Will translate the bit map to jpeg later. and repost.
