My building will be going up in the next 2 weeks, weather permitting, and then I will be starting the wiring. For lighting, I was told to use "high-bay LED" lights, but the electricians that have given me quotes stated that I only need 2 lights, that doesn't seem like enough.

Building will be 30x40 with 14 foot walls and 4/12 pitch roof so roughly 19 feet to center height. Shop will be used for metal working and Automotive work. Spray foam insulation, so lighter colored walls and grey concrete floor.

Any help is appreciated, not afraid to spend money to get it right the first time.

Two High bays? Absolutely NOT enough, I tried that.
30x40x14 3-1/2.

i installed two 20,000 Lumen led high bay 24" troffers.
I thought it would be all I needed, but it was clearly not the case.
In order to gain 'spread' I mounted them as high as practical in the peak, resulting of course, in truss shadows all over. But disregarding the shadows, the only part of the shop with reasonable lighting was a six to eight foot circle under each troffer.

I added (eventually) twenty of the Samsclub Honeywell four foot led shop lights.

That was OK, but not super. Then I added the loft and now I need more.
Platonic provided a proper lighting layout for me, which I have not yet achieved; I'll see if I can find it.

you sure he's not saying two switched boxes? i'm doing 3 boxes and they power 3 fixtures spread out.
If he's talking fixtures find out what they are.

It doesn't matter what the fixtures are, 2 fixtures in any 30x40 space used for anything but storage is wrong. You need no less than 12 fixtures 3x4 pattern for even shadow free distribution regardless of fixture lumen output.

With all due respect to electricians and all that they are very good at.....
They are not well versed in lighting and not equipped to tell you how many lights you need. When it comes to installing those lights, though, no one would be better.

This will be a free span, so rafter will be against the roof and nothing hanging down, another reason I did roll up doors instead of traditional garage doors.

I agree 100%.

A few weeks ago we were in a bardominium that was 5,000 square feet, 25 foot ceilings and very dark stones flooor and stained wood walls. He had 9 led high bay lights and it was bright.
