I finally pulled the trigger on a nice Vessel screwdriver set. I wanted to try out the wood composite handles and the thru tang versions were basically the same price as the normal set from Amazon.co.jp.

While I was at it, I also wanted to try some other interesting drivers. I got the battery terminal driver and some other interesting striking drivers. I don't think I've ever seen a 300mm long screwdriver with a striking cap, so I got a set of those with the wood handles. And the ball grip drivers are also striking cap screwdrivers that are electricity insulated, which I've also never seen. They apparently use a ceramic ball to connect the striking cap to the shank inside the handle to keep them insulated.

Also picked up a wood composite handled nut driver along with a Koken nut driver, and an Amex stubby ratcheting driver which I've already had the opportunity to use and I like it a lot.

One thing I will give a word of warning for. Do NOT order from Rakuten.co.jp. I originally tried ordering the Vessel set from they're and it's been a nightmare.

Their checkout page said the shipping was TBD but that I'd receive an email and the order would require approval before it would go through. Well I received an email a couple days later saying shipping would more than double the order total, but no request for approval, just a message saying my order total has been updated.

I emailed them asking for a cancellation and received a response that my order has be canceled. Then a week later I get an email that my order has been shipped. Two days later and I had the order I never approved, and in fact had "successfully" canceled. Now they won't refund until I return them, which is understandable, but they are trying to get me to ship them back cash on delivery, and the shippers around me are telling me that's is not a thing they do. I'm still trying to get them to give me a return label, but we're almost a month into this ordeal now.

FYI Frank does still sell Koken. He just isn’t dealing with Koken USA anymore. I emailed him a week or 2 ago asking for clarification because I’m looking for some koken items I can’t find on Amazon.JP

You better see if he has them in stock I ordred some stuff back in October still not delivered

Frank has to special order my last purchase. Took a little bit longer than usual but Frank delivered in the stated time frame, 6-8 week lead time.

I wouldn't of minded if he had responded to any of my 5 emails asking for an ETA or update. Literally had to open a paypal dispute to get it shipped.

Aigo 13/16 I bought in late 80’s at an auto parts store. Used it ever since.
Globemaster metric from a recent pawn shop score. I’ve seen German Globemaster but never Japan. These were sold at parts stores I think.

Recently received two sets of Vessel keys. A set of long Torx keys and another set of Allen keys in inches.

I placed an order from i-Tools in past and never had a problem. Took about 10 days to arrive to NYC. Shipping was quite a bit, but the overall costs for the tools were fair. Which seller did you order from?

The shop was Ohsawa Mono Good1. I know ours a marketplace and I don't blame Rakuten for the shop's mistake. What I don't like is that the Rakuten website specifically said I must approve the shipping charge once it's calculated, and then their system allowed the shop to charge my credit card and fulfill the order without my consent, and then it allowed the shop to ship the order after it had been canceled. It's just not a good system they've built for buying from third party sellers, and now it's not one I would trust again.

Never heard of that seller before. I was hesitant with my first purchase but it went fairly smooth. I submitted my cart and had a day or two to approve the shipping charges and the order, otherwise the order would be cancelled. I wouldn’t write Rakutan completely off due to a bad seller. I-Tools is fairly regarded and you can’t beat their selection. I recently placed an order with Amazon Japan and that went smooth, but I couldn’t find everything I was looking for.

CAUTION your set does not have a 9/64" wrench. I bought a Wera set and it did not have that size.

That’s what I don’t like about Rakuten, you’re supposed to calculate the shipping estimate yourself instead of a set price. Maybe because we’re in America so it figures out differently but either way it’s a bad system. I’ve had more than a few times where I couldn’t pull the trigger on an order because of the shipping fiasco.

That's kind of my point. I am writing off the Rakuten marketplace of 3rd party sellers, because my experience proves that the marketplace system Rakuten built allows sellers to do whatever they want with your order, even going directly against the rules laid out by the Rakuten website and checkout page. This means you're at the mercy of the whims of the individual shops. If you want to spend time trying to figure out which shops are reputable and voluntarily follow the rules of the marketplace, that's great. Mainly, I'm saying, you can't count on Rakuten's system to enforce any of the steps or checks that it claims are part of the purchasing process, so buyer beware when it comes to purchasing from 3rd party sellers on the Rakuten marketplace.

Note that this is all different from my experience buying from 3rd party sellers on Amazon's marketplace since Amazon actually handles the purchasing process and credit card charging, which means a seller can't charge you for an Amazon order if you haven't agreed to the order in Amazon's system.

Or just buy from known good sellers.

I've bought from i-Tools and Kouguyanopro Rakuten Ichiba, and both have been reasonable.

I-tools did the exact same thing to me with some Koken stuff. They sent me an invoice with the actual shipping quote which I was to reply to if I wanted the order fulfilled and the next thing I know they'd billed me and I had the items on my doorstep. I didn't even know it happened until I had a box waiting for me. Rakuten could use some work with it's checkout process. Lesson learned.

I like to know what I'm paying before hand so Frank's and Amazon only for me.

I tried to place an order with Frank, but after a month of no replies, I gave up. I wish Amazon had the selection of Rakuten, but they unfortunately don't.

I have not seen it mentioned yet. For those who don't know Webike has a selection of tools from KTC, Kowa, Tone, Ko-Ken and others. I have purchased from Webike many times with no problems.

Yes, I know but I have this measure in Wiha (made in Germany). :)

49458277553_b7f220cced_b.jpg

I use both brands, interchangeably. Both are of excellent quality.

That holder alone makes the Wiha price worthwhile - fantastic design! I smile every time I use it - versus the basic "twist everything else out of the way to get what I need " standard holder. But, it seems like they changed to another design....

I know everything from Nepros isn't cheap, but after checking out how much they go for on the nepros.net site (http://www.nepros.net/?cat=3&grp=18).....mmm, yeah the price definitely isn't easy to swallow! I'm glad I don't work on any motorbikes, so I'm safe ;)

Try emailing Frank at Frankstools: [email protected]

BTW, my "honda" screwdriver (OEM is Anex)

oh damn these screwdrivers surely a perfect pair for my Civic Type-R, where can I buy this?

I am looking for nice Japanese flare nut wrenches available in the USA, at a decent price - any leads?

Bonus points of they manufacture SAE sizes. Cheers!

Got a bunch of new tools in the mail today. First off a major upgrade to my socket rails. The Nepros rails were actually very affordable and look nice as expected. The ends are solid metal and the socket holders are some kind of sticky rubber material with silver flakes. I also picked up some more 1/4” Nepros sockets to finish off my set.

In addition I got some Merry connector pliers which I haven’t had a chance to try yet, and some KTC slip-joint pliers that were only $12 on Franks. I’m normally not a fan of slip joint pliers but these are really smooth and the grips feel great. No complaints for $12!

Got this micrometer for dead cheap. Does anyone know how old it is?

aDAkRje.jpg

I was never able to find out for sure but it's probably not newer than the 80s. Tools with the old logo were 70's & older for sure. Looks like some time in the 80s is when they stopped using the old logo & cursive font. I'm a big Mitu fan, I own quite a bit.

I have a pair of those KTC pliers too and really like them. After completing my sets of Knipex Cobras and Pliers Wrenches, I've retired all my other slip joints, but find that the KTCs are the best tool for the job in certain circumstances.

I also ordered a pair of the Merry connector pliers from Frank's tonight. I've had my eye on them for a while, and have been debating between them and the KTC AD101, which while more expensive have interchangeable arms. Also picked up a set of the "daily special" TOP FRC-6000 combination ratchet wrenches. I've been impressed by the TOP HM-32 and HT-200B adjustables I own and hopefully the FRC-6000s will be of comparable quality.

Webike has some unique offerings, but is overpriced on much of their tools. They will ship just about anything though, I've gotten some hard to find parts for my bikes from there.
