A shop for a motor swap

We built our house on 1 acre a few years ago with ZERO intention of ever adding a shop in the back. Why would we need to? We had a 4,000 square foot shop 25 minutes away. HAD! That's a long story! Suddenly I found myself packing a 3 car garage with my tools, my 1972 Camaro, SxS, zero turn mower, and all my hunting and fishing gear.

So it became obvious that we had to do something to clear the clutter. The Camaro spit a rod the day we were moving into this house, November 2017. We had to build a fence, irrigation, yard, landscaping, and my dad was living with us as he battled pancreatic cancer. So the Camaro took a back seat.

Fast forward to September 2019, I now have a 1 month old little boy, and the wife wants to park in the garage again. So we decide to build a shop. I wanted a 30x40 with 20x30 covered porch, we settled on a 10 foot porch. Got a few quotes from contractors, most weren't interested in the project or just flat blew us off. Then came a**hole #1, extremely good salesman, talked the talk and walked the walk. Showed us in person buildings that he had recently finished, always posting on social media, blah blah blah. We signed a contract with him in November 2019 and, against my better judgement, gave him a deposit. You guessed it, he vanished. The start and completion day has come and gone, nothing but excuses. We are now suing him, knowing full well that we wont get our money back, but once the court case is settled, I'm going to ruin his company .

Anyways, we found another contractor, one that doesn't require any money down, but one that said it will be a few months. His dirt and concrete guys showed up in early January 2020 and I at least have a really nice slab. The building will be 30x40x14 with 4:12 pitch roof, 3 12x12 roll up doors, and cedar trim on the porch. I'll try and document the build process with pictures as they come.

All this so I can finally swap motors in my Camaro :lol_hitti

The dirt work and the finished slab. It took 280 tons of select fill to get it high enough to not flood. Lowest point above grade is 1 foot, highest is just over 3 feet.

Looking good! I wish I had bought a property large enough to do something like that, but when we bought the house it wasn't something I was interested in doing.

On a lighter note, why are you swapping a motor for a thrown rod? The motor doesn't have anything to do with the rotating assembly.

I suspect a window in the side of the block.

In response to the fraud case, be sure that if you get a judgement against him you return to court to keep it in-effect. When he tries to get a loan, be it for a car/truck, motorcycle, or boat, or a mortgage, he will be S.O.L. :shocking: I am not an attorney, but if his credit is ruined and he has no-way to bond, he may decide to 'make you whole,' so he can return to his scams.

I bought a website with his company name. Once the court case is over, the site will go live and everybody that searches his company name will see what a fraud he is. Like I said, I’ll ruin his company. If he wants that site, it will be for sale for what he owes me :)

Roxanne is ****!
I hope everything works out with the AWOL contractor.
Great size for a shop. It will be nice when it's finished I'm sure.

Delays Delays Delays!!!

This Texas weather is really cramping my build.

On another note, the ******* who owes me money was involved in a head-on collision and totaled his truck, karma is a beautiful thing.

The shell is done! Got the brick work completed, while the masons were here we had them do a built in grill too at the house. So much more work to do. Have to run 3 trenches, 2 for drains and 1 for electrical. Then bring in 45 tons of select fill to build up my approach, then 90 tons of 2 inch recycled concrete for a surface to drive on. The front beams and posts will eventually get wrapped in cedar.

An update on the thief, I have filed charges on him. He was arrested for the exact same thing in 2018 and repaid that debt in lieu of jail time, received 1 year probation. At the very most, all he would receive is 2 years jail time. I’d gladly accept what he owes me plus more probation. He has blocked all contact with me

Good luck with the build this will be very nice! The 6.2, 4L80E is a great combo. If it’s not too late look into the 4L90E, the gear ratios are vastly superior.

6.0 or 6.2 with 4L80E is the plan. Not sure a 4L90E will fit if the case is bigger. Would love a 6L80E but they have severe clearance issues with the tunnel and the ground.

Small update. Rented a trencher to get the underground electrical in place and connect the gutters to my under ground drains. 450 feet of trenching took 3 hours in this thick black dirt and clay. Also added a flower bed and finished my built in grill.

The county has been replacing every under road drain on my main road, they has piled all the dirt 1 mile from my place. I asked if I could have some and he said take all you need. He called back later that day and sounded shocked that the entire pile was gone, apparently he didn’t believe I’d get it all moved in 1 day. It was roughly 90 yards. Managed to get my grading done with that free dirt.

Original electrician backed out of the job, so now I’m back to getting quotes.

Finally got the electrical 95% completed, stupid electrical supply company shipped the wrong 220 plugs.

LED high bay lights but out 16,500 limes each and I have 9 inside a 1200sf shop, 3 rows with a switch for each row so I can select where and how much light I want.
