My drill is on the way out...

My old Milwaukee 2704 drill is on the way out, unless I give it a good smack it won't switch from forward to reverse even though the switch is flipped. To me its not worth sending it in to have it looked at, its been through its fair share of abuse. Right now, is the biggest and baddest m18 from Milwaukee the 2804? Anything better in the m18 line to look at? Is there anything new coming out that's worth waiting for?

You have already diagnosed the fault. If smacking it sorts the issue you nearly certainly have a lose connection either at the switch (highly likely). Or at another place.

Why not open it up and see if you can sort the problem? What use is there spending money and increasing landfill when this is almost certainly an easy fix.

This thing earned its keep, and I don't plan on opening it up until I have a replacement as it can still be convinced to work. Honestly I dropped the thing a few times and it has always made a "speed control" noise as long as the light was on after being dropped. I'm just looking for oppinions on a new drill, maybe more on fixing it later.

I don’t think he cares.. but realistically you should just send it in first and see what happens. Ya never know, they might just send you the newer one, unless you cant be without a drill for the time being.

If it really doesn’t matter to ya, then yea, thats the newest model I believe, and I wouldn’t bother with trying to get anything one key.

I have all the new one key versions at work. For 99% of people it really serves no purpose other than a few minutes of entertainment when you first get it.

I have the 2804 with the Rohm chucks (supposedly - red line, no run out) and am happy with it, but I’m just a home DIY/hobbyist woodworker. I’d send yours back to Milwaukee even if you decide to get the 2804 just to have as a backup.

I had a drill tht acted very similar, turned out it was just the power cord where it entered the drill had fractured . quick cut and re attach it was perfect

I'm not sure if they are the same or not. But I've had 2 2604's with the same issue and if you look at the parts on ereplacement parts it's like "Chuck, gearbox, electrical" I've had them apart and the motor, switch and battery board are all wired together with staked or potted connections. I wasn't able to just buy a switch. And to buy the replacement "electrical" kit it was over 100 dollars. (Not worth it to me)
Not correcting or anything just putting out my experience on the subject

On another note, I never had a 2704, I went from a long suffering 2604 to a 2804. Both Great drills.
I've got 2 2804s on the truck now that get used daily. No complaints.

Agreed, it's not work the usually 50-100 dollar price difference to me. It would be neat if our company had them all one-keyed and able to be kept track of but I think until it's made a whole lot easier and cheaper, they'll just put up with the occasional missing tool.
