faulty, here's that box in original paint and emblem. 59 was the last year for AMD boxes, 1960 ushered in the gray/red Waterloos.

Through the generosity of another GJ member I acquired this fairly solid old SK hip roof tool box. I have a friend who is an old school bump & paint body man that says he will try to bang the dings out of it for me.

I'm wondering if there is a known source for the hardware on these old boxes. Anyone? I'm new to tool box restoration. But I think I can handle the hardware and paint if someone can do the tin knocking.
]

That big dent under the hasp obviously came from someone prying a lock off the box. I suppose that you could say it adds character, or in the notion it was a tool thief, exposes a gross lack of character.

I've been looking at hardware lately for some wooden presentation boxes I have in the works. I'm very unimpressed with what I'm seeing. Kinda off topic but maybe not. Any direction would be appreciated. PM if it's sidetracking a thread.

Any information on this cabinet, found it semi local and may pick it up to add to my stack (although the colors worn match).

Thoughts on condition, value and era?

IMG-2296.jpg

Complete garbage. I'll dispose of it properly. I drove 550 miles round trip so I could properly dispose of this 8d rolling cabinet. It's lonely ...

You mean this one?

I would be willing to entertain a straight trade... You paying the shipping, of course.

(actually, my son lives in Philly, and if I ever drive out there, I will hit you up.)

Thanks but I'm greedy and plan on holding on to my Heritage 8d in hopes of finding a 10d top chest. I want the best of both worlds!

They'd need a chart or a cheat sheet or a Mensa-class mind. I've gone through the catalogs from the late 30's to 1950 with a fine tooth comb, first for a MechaniKit box I found, and then a HandiKit box, because of the danged color variations. For those boxes, it went from duplo battleship grey to OD green (during the war), then to red (around 1949). I think I remember seeing a 'Now available in two colors' type notation on the top boxes, implying only one color originally, but I don't remember which came solo first, or when that notation first shows up.

Well, I did strike a deal on this chest. Further to Private Lugnutz' comments, The first available catalog that the K-55-W (for WRINKLED Gray) or K-55-R (RED) appear is in the 1941 Catalog.

The predecessor to this model, the K-5 came in gray. Snap-On previously offered models in gray, and models in red, but the K-55 seems to be the first they offered a choice on, near as I can tell. The caveat to the 1941 as a jumping off date, is that collecting snap-on website doesn't have a link to a 1940 catalog.......

The other interesting thing (that I gather some solace from) is that the removable tray was a separate purchase, and not integral to the K55 itself, so.......I can profess to own a complete Snap-On K-55-W!! Whoopee!

That's a nice tool box OOB, well done.
Maybe the optional tote trays were the same as the ones still available? The one listed now is a KTA3A and measures 20 1/4" long 8" wide and 3 1/4" high with the handle down. Would one of these fit in the top of your box?

I have high confidence that I can find the older KT-1W that was on the same catalog page, in fact I'd comfortably settle for the KT-1R (Cardinal Red)

Heading to what looks like a honey hole in the woods this weekend, and it may even turn up there!!

That's an interesting stack hemifalcon. First time I've seen what appears to be the older gray crinkle paint on a 10d chest. Is there a date code behind the logo? Every other one I've seen has the later hammered paint on it. Man I'd love to know the story behind all those handles being removed. EDIT: I guess the question I should be asking is, IS that the older gray crinkle paint on the 10d? May just be losing something in the pic. If it is that really has me scratching my head and would be a very unique chest.

Oh yes sir.. your “edit” is made in confidence.. that is not krinkle paint.. it’s hard to say what it really is-or the actual color.. I’ll edit this later when I get out to the shop to check the date.

Would someone more knowledgeable than me (not saying much) be able to provide any detail regarding one of my Kennedy toolbox? I was told it was from the 1920's, but other than that don't know much about this ...

kennedy-old.png

It's part of several other Kennedy boxes I own / use on a frequent basis but its definitely my favorite.

Thanks Outlaw, RTM .. i've searched extensively the archives in advance of posting, but may have missed something. If you (or others) stumble across this again, i'd appreciate the link.

I previously found a set of helpful pics from a thread over on practicalmachinist that narrowed in on the decade. But more details pics and links to original catalogs would certainly be appreciated.

This is a 1958 CM Crown set made by the Advertising Metal Display Company of Chicago. I picked it up at an estate sale this week.

13 Feb 20-1a.jpg13 Feb 20-1b.jpg13 Feb 20-1c.jpg

The outside shows some staining but not too bad, but the inside is fabulous! The PO lined all the drawers with orange foam padding and except where a couple of spills soaked through, the finish is perfect--even the top of the roller is unmarked due to the piece of carpet between it and the top box. You can actually see reflections in the finish.

13 Feb 20-1e.jpg13 Feb 20-1f.jpg

Under the tote I found the tags for each piece--No. 4070 2-Drawer Chest and No. 4358 3-Drawer Roller

13 Feb 20-1d.jpg

Under one of the foam pads I found a portion of a seasonal Sears catalog with the set advertised as a combo for $53.77

13 Feb 20-1g.jpg

Under another pad I found the delivery slip showing the catalog number, the weight and the price. It was delivered to the owner on 13 Feb 1958 at the same address where I picked it up.

There's no doubt there is some rust on the exterior but a lot of is seems to be old spill residue. I took a quick lick at some of it with WD-40 but did not see any noticeable change. Any suggestions?

EDIT: I meant to note that GJ members Leevon and d42jeep have the Montgomery Ward POWR KRAFT versions of the bottom and top. See posts 11572 and 11578 in this thread.

I've got a 2d Heritage I'm parting out faulty. Pretty sure they'd all be the same length but send me dimensions of exactly what you need. EDIT: My parts box is a top chest. Slides for bottom chests are more than likely longer but still let me know the length you need.

Incredible find. My jealousy meter is pegged out! The tags just add to the **** factor for you. I'd keep with the WD40 with some fine steel wool. The paint on those things is really tough. I've scrubbed the **** out of mine with great results. That set also affirms my belief that the Crown logo started sometime during the 58 production year. Great score!
