I picked up this stand last week. Funny thing is that i sold basically the same stand 3 weeks ago and regretted selling it.

The stand is awesome and super heavy. The top plate screws on. The problem is that the threaded holes on top of the column are crooked. I’m guessing it was drilled either first thing on a Monday or end of the day on Friday.

So one hole is in the correct place but I need to turn the plate just a few degrees. The new hole locations would overlap the existing so I need to fill them and re-drill and tap.

What’s the best way to do this which will be strong? I’m going to mount my old blue point grinder i’m restoring on it. I don’t want it coming loose if I move it around.

I'd leave it if mine but can see it'd drive some crazy. Without an adapter plate i'd look to drilling/tapping 2 new locations. If it were made for 4 bolts... 3 will hold goodnuf. Check for surfaces mating without gaps. You gotta make adapter plate to mount grinder on it?????

It would drive me nuts too. I'd install three bolts with "imperfect" threads, tighten down, cut them off and re-drill correctly and tap.

I was thinking something like this. maybe I can jb weld bolts in place and cut them off. then re-drill and tap.

Also I was heard about tapered cast iron plugs but haven’t read up on them yet.

No need for any JB. Alter the thread on the bolts with a chisel or center punch, force them in place and cut off. They will stay in place on their own.

If you want to plug and redrill the holes, Loctite is the best way to hold the plugs in. If you redrill the holes slightly offcenter, I think you're going to have a hard time holding in the little bit of the plugs which will remain on one side.

Consider drilling the holes out, in the proper locations, then putting in a threaded insert bringing it back to the original size.

There is also an old trick I've used where the holes were drilled slightly out of position: Take the bolts and turn the threads off in the area where they go thru the grinder base. That will allow you to shift the grinder a small amount without sacrificing any bolt strength.

Or, you can also drill out the mounting holes in the grinder base a little larger allowing you to move it slightly.

run a bolt into the holes with loctite .Between the threads, drill & tap 2 holes in each , . run a couple screws into the threads, loctited .
grind off flush. re drill your mounting holes in proper location

You could just epoxy it in place.

Or drill thru and thru, new holes, new locations. Tap. You'd only need two screws to hold the top plate on securely. Maybe two holes midway between the others.

It looks like an unusual project! Hope the casting doesn't break whatever you do.
Maybe it was drilled that way on purpose originally, so the grinder was at an angle. Maybe the original user had one arm or a wooden leg or something like that, and stood a bit sideways to it?
