when will you stop buying tools?

That is what my wife always asks me, when I was working as a auto tech, she said I would quit when I retired or quit working as a tech. WRONG as I would still be doing things with my hands, woodworking, home repairs, restoration work, etc etc. So would be having to buy DIFFERENT kinds of tools. She even told me I shouldn't bother binging them home when I changed careers recently, that I shoud just sell them where they sit. Then told a friend of ours I wasn't smart enough to sell my tools when I stopped working as a tech. Funny though, she has no problem spending money I still make with my tools, and the money I save us by do my own repairs, and so on.

So my answer will continue to be the same "the day I breath my last breathe will be the day I STOP buying tools" She just grmbles at me.

So I ask when will you stop buying tools?

When my "wishlist" on the certain websites I have is completely diminished. That would mean however that I have to stop ADDING to them ;)

Yesterday was the first time I bought a tool in a while. 1 3/16" socket for the P7100 pump on a 12v Cummins. My sets only go to 1 1/8" and I didn't have it in the oddball sockets I've bought over the years for other large bolts/nuts.

When I am buried 6 feet deep in the ground. I will never stop buying tools!

OBTW, if your wife has a problem with you buying tools maybe you should remind her that you could always trade her *** in on a newer model. :beer:

I think it is all a matter of perspective; when I worked @ Sears in the tool dept, I would have woman have fights with their husbands about buying tools while they had dresses draped over their arm they were going to buy.... they said things like... "you don't need anymore tools!". IF the husband said; "you don't need anymore dresses".... they would never hear the end of that! Guys have their things they like and girls have theirs.... both have their "needs" and never the twain shall meet! Many times these turned into fights.... I just said let me know if you need any help and walked away, LOL! Ahh, battle of the sexes continues! I had one couple that was unique; they both used tools and each had their own tools, own toolbox and they never used each others tools! They were buying twice the amount of tools; so they could use their own stuff.... maybe thats what its all about... you got YOURS and I have MINE! The last thing that is your own in a marriage; your stuff! Maybe the women are jealous! :)

I've actually been pretty sure after this or that tool there was nothing left for me to buy, and then I figure out some whole new category of tool.

It didn't take much to push me down the slippery slope of "collecting" tools, buying old tools that I have no personal use for, and then looking for items to complete the set.

One thing I bought was a flat rate manual so I can look up each job I do to the vehicles & multiply the flat rate hours x shop rate to find out what the labor cost would be. This proved to be an eye opener for the wife and has deflected a lot of the criticism I used to get for buying tools now that she realizes how much it would cost to take it in somewhere versus the cost of a tool that allows me to be able to do the job. I'm like you, I handle all the repairs around the house including electrical, plumbing, carpentry, appliance repair, etc so need more types of tools than someone that just works on cars. Ask your wife to call around to local dealerships to get estimates on work you have just done so she doesn't have to take your word on it & compare what it cost you to do it to what the dealer wants for the same thing, it made a big difference in how my wife viewed my purchases. :beer:

I havent really been buying tools recently because I want to do more with my truck. Only things I can think of that I am going to buy in the near future are some die grinders, A ratcheting crimper, maybe a 3" air cutoff tool and maybe a cordless impact. Other than that I don't see much tool buying until probably July or August.

I keep telling myself I will only buy metric tools and then only in larger sizes. I then find myself in the pawnshop with 20 different Proto, Bonney, Billings, P&C, and New Britain combo and offset box end wrenchs in one hand while staring at the 40 different Proto, Bonney, Indestro, New Britain, Mac, Armstrong, Snap-on, and Williams SAE sockets in the other. Well, when the counterman said he would take $20 for the lot, I couldn't turn it down. Now could I?
Or the three P&C offset boxends in SAE for $5 in the pawnshop across the street, today.
Or the pawnshop I plan to hit tomorrow, that I have been told by a friend has dumped a large selection on "new" tools into their sort through bins.
Well I guess is I will never, never, ever stop buying tools. It is way to much fun! Woo-hoo!!!

Probably after a 20% VAT is added to everything we buy to PAY FOR OBAMA CARE. Won't be able to afford anything to work on therefor no reason to have tools. Maybe we'll get universal car care, and home repair.

Every time I think I've plateaued at the next level, I get interested in something else that opens up a new category. The last 2 years has been auto body, boy is that a large area of specialty tools!

The way I look at it is, Went to the flea market today the SO wrench's that I bought new at lets say $27 are going for $10 to $15. The dresses that the wife bought for $27 are going for $.50 to a $1. Nuff said.:headscrat

As I learn to do more things, I need more tools so I will be buying for the rest of my life......and BEYOND!!!!

My will contains details of a trust I set up that will continue to but one USA made tool a month for the next 100 years after I pass on to my great reward.

Billymade,

I've decided to fix this problem two women at a time. My two little girls have grown up with my tools. They know what they are, how to use them, and how valuable and useful they can be. Whenever I go out to the garage, I almost always have two little shadows following me. I think if more people took the time to share their interests with their girls, like they do with their boys, there would be fewer problems later in life between spouses.
