Today was a very productive day for me. I started on a bandsaw mini-pallet, replaced a molded in bearing and modified a mill vise for safer float-drilling.

Repaired the frame for the exterior gate that had been nailed to the side of the building.

Drilled 7/8" counter bores in the frame, then through drilled 1/4" through the 2X4's and the stucco, fastened the frame to the garage framing using 1/4" X 4" Lags with USS washers.

For fastening to wood I prefer the heavier USS washers rather than the thinner SAE washers.

I've been having a little trouble with the Explorer recently so I started looking at it yesterday. It's a 2007 with the 4.6 V8. Idling fine but it was bucking a little in overdrive at slow speeds when accelerating in overdrive around 45 or so. I've been through that before - changed the transmission fluid and filter and it took care of it. The difference this time was that it was also doing it a high throttle settings. Get in it hard and it was definitely missing but no CEL.
Took it out with the tablet and the Torque app and I did manage to capture some misfires. The worst was #3 at 12 misfires with numbers 1 and 8 being the only cylinders that didn't have one.
I swapped the coils from the 1 and 3 cylinders and took it out again. I got far fewer misfires logged but the highest number was still the number 3 cylinder. I could actually tell a difference in the way it was running though. It seemed to have more power at high throttle. Which, you know, makes sense because it wasn't missing as much so duh.
I changed the plugs back at 75K - it has 117K on it now. I'm just watching it for now because the coils are pretty expensive. I'm also a little concerned because moving the coil didn't really move the problem - it made it better, but #3 still had the most misfires.
So, one of the other problems with this particular vintage Explorer is brittle wiring insulation. It cracks and causes problems.
It's a huge rabbit hole but I'm not convinced that throwing $400+ worth of coils and plugs at it is going to solve the problem.

Finished setting up my new belt grinder.

b792ef9e6ffe93a159e0e5fe1c4d8ca7.jpg

Used it to finish a couple sets of copper bench vise jaws for the garage and basement.

And cut the rivers out of these inner fender panels.

I need to get them blasted and start working on repairs and modifications to make them fit.

Cutting apart my fuel tank to properly weld out the access panel nuts on the top panel.

Then tackle the fuel line.

Then weld up the top part back together so I can finally line it with fuel tank sealer.

Made a stand for a monitor and some speakers for my desk. Hopefully this will give me a better working environment. This was just the fit check to see if everything would fit. I already found one thing that needs to be modified. I need to put a cut out just in front of the monitor to give me a little more room on the desktop.

Expert level Tetris.

Trying to get the 18.5 foot 1959 Ranchero squeezed into an already full garage. I think this means maximum density for all 2 wheeled vehicles as well as 2 Vespas in the back to the Ranchero in the garage. Gotta do another round tomorrow and see if it is even gonna work at all.

As it stands right now, I've got 10 bikes and 3 cars in a "2 car tandem". I think I can squeeze the Ranchero in for longer term storage, but it will come down to inches.

I have been reading about garage fires here on the forum including GeddyT's thread about his garage fire, "From losing everything to being cash-poor and shop-rich in "only" five years!" and it got me thinking....
How can I be alerted if there is a fire in my unattached garage? ......without much expense???

I have a ventless natural gas, open flame Procom "convection" heater in my garage (it runs all winter on/off, to maintain 55F) so I do take precautions...and still worry.

My garage furnace, a 30K BTU Procom Garage ventless heater. The glass on the front ends right before the top of the heater plenum and is an open flame. The plenum has a temp controlled fan. This is a convection heater...and works real nice, for me....to keep the garage 55F all season long.

I bought a Lifesaver photoelectric kitchen smoke detector for $11.54...

The photoelectric sensor is suppose to reduce nuisance alarms. I choose this as the furnace in the garage is a ventless and has a open flame, just like a kitchen stove.

My fire alarm up on the ceiling of the garage...so far, so good. It will be interesting to see how the cars exhaust works to trigger but so far, the truck was running in a out and no alarm beeps yet...looking good.

and a Vtech baby monitor for $18 to be able to hear the smoke alarm in the house.

The monitor I bought is only one way. I would have to spent over $30 for an intercom, 2 way system.

The microphone of the baby/fire alarm monitor. Up and pointing towards the alarm on the ceiling.

https://scontent-dfw5-2.**.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/87799473_3470010886358765_189664106523918336_n.jpg?_nc_cat=100&_nc_ohc=3Ff-19JV35UAX_8YG13&_nc_ht=scontent-dfw5-2.**&oh=eb2249a52fb85c664748bf4073e542f5&oe=5F0093AF

The monitor reciever in our home was placed in the kitchen. I can hear "ANY" noise in the garage, including burglars! If I get injured I can yell for help and someone will hear me too!

https://scontent-dfw5-2.**.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/87327233_3470010959692091_4970930680931287040_n.jpg?_nc_cat=100&_nc_ohc=RsF8xYXaPvYAX_1dhTv&_nc_ht=scontent-dfw5-2.**&oh=509ce725decf380cc6c5d57e15e681d1&oe=5EBAFC60

All together, I spent less than $30 and have piece of mind. Besides the monitor alerting me of the smoke detector, I can hear "ANYTHING", including burglars. I wanted to do this on the cheap (automation is so expensive and outdated after a year.) and I think I achieved that!

I put my updated/repaired gas gauge from speedhut back in my Z28. Then I started putting the remflex header gaskets in. Back to that tonight

I made a new cross slide dial and assembly for my Atlas/Craftsman 12" lathe. Everything except for the lead screw and handle are new.

And after:
Bm0IwvcJ_jY8IzJd9D2oY9lCCFQFEOwguch1PoGsx_5e2eXzevwEK_tQ6LKM8x4YoBqtiM5MYl9_Azc0Y451zw7FauBzBus_YcKbzKpZKi48e2UttOTIdjQw9KTJGqkL-8YElUZ88p0=w600

I designed the new cross slide to include thrust bearings at both ends, the dial reads on the diameter instead of the radius, and I have the ability to zero the dial out. Now I need to not screw up stamping the numbers on it.

Wow, that is beautiful work. Do you have any more info on how you scored the lines on the dial?

Sounds all too familiar. You will know that you have reached maximum saturation when you have to shimmy sideways between vehicles and other obstacles just to maneuver through the garage. Pickups (Rancheros and ElCaminos included) do make excellent storage racks.

Rebuilt and installed the water pump on the Burg. Started hacking on the rear subframe to lower the seat. Disassembled a small General lathe head, in preparation for repairs.

Just a few little more things to do to it, different filler neck(I think) run lines for the breather tubes/rollover valves and seal up the access panels then she’s ready for final placement under the bronco.

***** my mini vacation has come to an end though.

decided we needed more light in the kitchen, and the wife wanted to clean up the area. there was a window over the sink, but we had to close it up for future renovations. it was way too dark now! so I enlisted the help of some bubbly, and the kids.

I love mine, but I've literally replaced everything in the engine bay except for the bottom end. There's a lot of stuff that can/will break on top of the engine that won't stop it from running but will cause a loss of performance. When enough of those things going wrong and it's finally noticeable it can be very frustrating as there's no simple fix other than replacing/rehabbing pretty much everything. They were never drag racers (I don't think even a stock GTS is capable of a sub 6 second quarter) but when running right they have loads of torque at any RPM and are geared for a top speed that will definitely put you in jail.

My cousin's was originally owned by the CEO of the Lincoln Tech I taught at. The original owner bought it new and never had a single dealer service done. He had the oil changes done at the school. When my cousin bought it, it wouldn't even spin the tires going around a corner in the rain with your foot on the floor. Against my advice to take it to a local Porsche performance specialist I know, he took it to a Porsche dealer for the maintenance. A tune up, plugs, valve adjustment, injection cleaning and $2200.00 later it was back to factory specs. It was a lot better, but it was still pretty lazy for supposedly being 320 HP. It was also never what he expected it to be. He thought he was going race it at PCA track events. He sold it after two years and took a beating on it.

Started packing up and organizing it better. I took a job that will have me away from home for 4 weeks at a time and only home for 4-5 days then right back to it.

So trying to make the garage useful to the wife and safer for anyone that venturs into it (like my 3 year old)
Man this is gonna be tough, been with my 3 year old EVERYDAY since he was born. I currently work from home and watch him.

Hey Passn', do you have any non -Motorcraft coils on that? Ford Tech Makoloco did a video with misfires/ shift probs... It's on YouTube.

Non-Motorcraft coils on right side causing interference with trans. wiring harness near by.

Just a thought. Good luck!

All the coils are original. They have not been replaced. It's running pretty decent since I moved two coils so I'm going to drive it until it gets worse.

Started modding the fuel tank. Some of the inlets needed to be moved, and a couple strategic dents added. Welding HDPE is entertaining. Steel would have been quicker.
