Thank you for the nice compliment - sincerely appreciated. I started in August 1978 with a new BS degree from Purdue, a wife of one year, a 1970 GMC Jimmy and $800 in my pocket. The rest is history with lots of intervening blood, sweat & tears between 1978 and 2010. We have our issues, but this is still a great country.

My mom and a few cousins went to Purdue. She was there about the time you were.

Very cool. My wife and I have been here three years now and look forward to raising our two little ones in this environment. We're in the Door Village area to the southwest of town.

To make a very long story short, I simply do not have time to mess with old cars at this time in my life. I am fully occupied with managing and running my business, including my employees - my extended family.

When I have time, I want to jump in a car and drive it, or get on a moto and ride it. Tinkering is for my retirement, just not right now.

I love to fish in your beautiful country and I have always had a warm welcome from every Canadian I have dealt with. I have toured the Maritimes (Newfoundland, Nova Scotia & Labrador), BC, Quebec and Ontario by motorcycle and fished in Ontario and NWT.

I live on Lake Scugog, near Mosport speedway in Ontario, world famous for ice fishing, some trophy muskie and pickerel caught here. I have no interest in fishing but I do have a small boat to putt around the lake in.

Glad you like the auto / gas & oil collectibe stuff. I really enjoy the old gas globes and have several that date back to the 1910's. I have to control myself from getting many more as I simply do not have the space.

On your note about going up to 200 MPH, it feels the same as 150. Just make sure you have a long straight away. I went 200 MPH on my 2006 Suzuki GSX-R 1000. (Goodies attached of course. She did 185 MPH factory original from the dealership.)

This is always my first thought when I see a pile of recent exotics. Judging from your antiques, you obviously didn't just go out and buy every sports car in the rap video like I sometimes suspect that people do.

I understand not having the time to mess with older cars...but I would still want more diversity. I assume that you have a hard time exercising what you have...

I really admire your collection, but your words, apparent work ethic and drive far exceed anything you have in your collection. It's refreshing to hear people still talk about those values.

Thank you for your compliment - most sincerely appreciated. I could write a book about the great people I have had in life that helped to provide my values and my love of our country. This is a bit off topic for garage stuff, so I'll be brief. One of the stories that my dad related to me regarding his childhood was that he walked to & from school barefoot during the Great Depression, and put his shoes on once he got to school. When I asked why, he told me that his parents did not have the money to replace shoes, so he did not want wear out the soles on his shoes using them for simply walking back and forth from school.

This made a deep, profound and lasting impression on me on how life can REALLY be - not this dream world we live in now. My dad then went on to fight in Europe during the Second World War, and later Korea. Did I respect my dad for his personal sacrifices and his sacrifices for our country? You bet. It was his sacrifices, and millions of Americans like him, that allows me to life the I have today.

As to the Ferrari, I looked at a number of them and decided that I liked the Lambos the best. The Italians do make a great sports car. Yes, I live below my means - inherited that from my parents - and I own everything I have free & clear. I don't like payments or debt.

OK - so which oil can did you like the most? Did you see the original metal-seam Polly quart can - still full? I have several copper-top Sinclair cans also.

Someone sent me a link for your thread, but once I saw it, I know I probably commented earlier on this thread. It was fun taking another look in any case! All the memorabilia "make" the place IMO. It ties the package together. I'm particularly fond of the black & white checkerboard floor in your brick garage as we have that in our 1930s restored shop as well. Thanks for sharing and doing your part, along with many of us, to keep this economy propped up.

Glad you enjoy "just looking" - that is the main goal anyway. Just thought perhaps you were / are a collector. The Mobil stand is an original and the cans are also - just empty. I also have a Cities Service stand (rectangular) that I restored and it is quite rare and have a full set of Cities Service cans also. Why do we like old oil cans????? Strange hobby, but I have lots of fun with the oil & gas collectibles.

Cool porcelain sign !! I have seen the art-deco female figure on a gas globe before - don't remember which one.

One word of advice - be careful ! Once you start collecting gas & oil stuff it gets addicting.......

How can you tell if it's porcellain? It kind of seemed like it was silk screened to me. The colored areas were raised a little, but they did seem to have a fairly decent gloss.

Oh yea, I got the oil/gas collecting bug a few years ago! Not a strange collection.... it makes a garage look like a "real garage"!! I attend estate auctions from time to time, and that gas/oil stuff gets bid up high!

How can you tell if it's porcellain? It kind of seemed like it was silk screened to me. The colored areas were raised a little, but they did seem to have a fairly decent gloss.

I found this article for you to read on porcelain enamel signs. My experience is that the sign is typically heavy guage steel, and the chips are telltale because it looks like an old porcelain sink that had been chipped. The porcelain is deep on the sign. The colored areas you refer to are the buildup during the painting process before it is fired.

Seriously though I have seen some near perfect & very rare porcelain signs go for over $40,000 and there are some very rare gas globes that approach $60,000. Some of the most rare quart oil cans push $1,000.

I knew these signs were expensive but wow! Looking at that site really was impressive. I think I will keep my eye out for estate sales etc. and know when I see a great deal. I’m sure most people know the value of the signs, but you never know when you may find a deal.
If you ever need one of your cars test driven down here in the Texas heat, feel free to send it down, heck I'll even top it off with fuel and wash it for you.
I do have a question for you, is your Florida garage as impressive? I imagine if your down there you must get withdraws form your northern home and have to have a fix in Florida. Congrats on a truly inspirational garage. My father was also a veteran of wars and the values I learned from him are un-measureable.

I have to say that you have a beautiful example of what a dream garage could and can look like. I am very impressed with your range of cars and your great collection of oil/gas memorabilia. Seeing another example like this always gives me a motivational boost to strive to succeed.

I must say that I am happy to see you chose Lambo over the "other" Italian auto maker. I too am partial to the 'bull' and have heard many stories of the reliability nightmares that the Ferrari brand can be.

This is the first time I have seen someone with a collection of gas pump globes. Very nice. That is something to be proud of and I am sure it is worth quite a bit to any serious collector.
