Drives, at least 12,000 people have made the trip from Katahdin, in central Maine to Springer Mountain, in north Georgia, crossing 14 states and five national parks. My brother-in-law lives on Mt. Desert Island just outside Acadia National Park in Maine and his next door neighbor's two 20-something daughters did the trail back in the 1990s. They started in Maine and when they got to the end in Georgia wanted to turn around and hike back. Their parents disagreed and drove them home. Their Swedish heritage and living off the grid their whole lives made it no big deal.i've heard people have walked that 2000 mile trail, but can't recall if they made it or not from one end to the other.
