Here is an FYI for Wilton rebuilders.

I’m working on the $350 C3 from a few pages back.

The end/dust cap was a bit beat. I ordered the one mentioned from etrailers.com but it was too small. I likely could make that one work by flaring out the metal or gently hammering it out.

I found a perfect fit dust cap for this C3 (1979). Advance Auto $17

Grand Quikcet 3" quick release clamp-on
Stanley no. 766V 3" clamp-on w/ replaceable jaw faces
Hollands no. 16, 3.5" fixed base
Samson no. 5219, 4" swivel base

The Samson is my first Rock Island. It looks to be in nice shape, little wear, just needs cleaned. It does not have replaceable faces if that helps to date it. The slide is stamped 5034 on top.

davethorik...Nice finds! That particular Hollands no. 16 (3-1/2" jaw) had a short production life, approximately (1910-1916). It's listed in a Hollands cat. no.22, which I do not have. I suspect the Rock Island Samson is from the same era, you'll need to find some old Sears catalogs for that one.

Hi all!

I found this forum while trying figure out what this vise is used for.

I bought it and an old Rock Island at a flea market.

Maybe it is more of a clamp, than a vise. I have tried googling, but haven’t had any success. I am a novice with old tools and don’t really know how to describe it. So, apologies if the is a common tool.

It has had some heavy welding on the jaws and it may be custom made, but I just want to know if it had a specific purpose. It does have some numbers stamped on one of the rails, but no name.

I can post more pics.

Nice Prentisses, Smitty. Does that comprise the entirety of the 3” bulldog styles?

I picked up this 450SJ today. Needs a little clean up. It’s dated 1975, so I speculate it was towards the end of when they made these swivel jaw bullets. Seems like they eventually took the (IMO stupid) horizontal drift pin out, but left the dimple on the side (see below a 1960 catalog pic).

Picked up this reed 106 a couple weeks ago...was my first vise purchase in a year or so. Back on the wagon! It’s seen it’s fair share of use but should clean up decent and provide years of more service.

I found my first 4” Wilton vise. This is a 400S HD, this model was about 10 lbs heavier than the standard 400S. I just realized that all I need to complete the set is a 3 1/2”. There’s nine vises in the set from 2”-8”.

Here is a Columbian D44-M3 that got a "return to service" clean up. Knocked off the rust, freed up the swivel, made two screws for the jaws, coat of BLO to preserve the paint, cleaned up the jaws, lubed the screw and swivel. The as found image was here Swivel is dated 4-80

Unusual seller description in that listing

These welded offset vises are offered from a bunch of different companies.
I don’t know whether there’s one company who makes them, or whether the design originated somewhere, and everybody copied it.
I yhink I’ve seen the design offered by Dolex in France, one or more Indian tool manufacturers, probably some Chinese tool companies, and I forget who else.
I ‘ve also seen Stainless versions somewhere.

I didn't expect it to be a Heuer - re-reading my own post I see where I gave that impression.

I knew it was from Poland when I bought it. In fact, that's why I bought it. It is well made. The swivel base is steel. I haven't gotten into it yet to tell on the rest of it, assuming it's obvious on close inspection.

Here’s something you don’t see every day. This is a Prentiss no. 31, it has 1 3/4” jaws and weighs in at 2 1/2 lbs. most of the nickel plating is long gone but it’s the real deal.

The vise also has the Prentiss NY stamp on the dynamic but I can’t seem to get a good pic of it.

Thanks loydski, I was really excited to get it today. The pin is missing and one of the balls on the handle is gone but I can overcome these issues. As a Prentiss collector it really made my day.

It’s well stamped which tells me it’s late 1800’s early 1900’s.

New to me Wilton 500.. My first actual bullet (Have a tradesman as well).

Paid 250 with the stand, which is probably too much. But I haven't seen a bullet of any size go for less then 350 local in the last few years. So I dont feel too bad about paying that for a well used, but perfectly functioning 5" bullet.

No date code though so I am not sure how old it is. Anyone have any ideal.

Smitty, if I had found that, it would be a candidate for new Nickel plating by a buddy of mine that does table top Nickle plating (He's actually done this in a campsite for small lantern parts! I'm wanting to make a setup of my own!)
