Ok, so resurrecting this thread HOPING Scott is still here and he still owns this garage.

After many years of lurking on GJ and doing what I could with an 18x18, 80+ year old garage with a badly cracked and buckling floor I will be moving to a new-to-me 22x24 (I think) modern, attached garage with an not cracked, FLAT garage floor in a couple weeks.

If I don't make this garage look like I want I never will. 65, retired two years and I want to go for it and make something like this garage. Hoping Scott will consider posting replacement pictures of his garage.

Dan, first off, congratulations on the new digs!

I have no idea what happened to Scott but his profile indicates his last activity on the Garage Journal was February 21, 2014. His profile also shows he's the owner of www.lateral-g.net but when I go there it is currently owned by Jody Bernard.

Dan, it's good to have all this free time in retirement so welcome to my world.

Thanks for the info, Bob. I should have known to check his profile. I'll drop him a DM and MAYBE he'll see it.

Yeah, retirement has been great so far. I shouldn't tempt fate - especially with this virus going up exponentially by saying it but so far my health has been excellent.

We never planned to move, we planned to do extensive work to our home once we paid off the house by doing paint inside & out, refinish hardwood floors, replace windows and redo our exterior arbor, etc. LOTS of deferred maintenance. Instead we decided to look around, "one thing led to another", yada, yada and TA DA!!! We found a late 70's house that a contractor had taken down to the studs, even removing the roof structure, added 700 sq. ft. and totally rebuilt to modern open style with a great room open to the kitchen, a pool (I've never had one before). We're really excited about it and of course I'm really excited about the garage.

Thanks. Yes, I found that link by checking XcYZ's profile page.

My questions are about how the garage floor looks now years later and whether he would recommend any changes to the design he used? Primarily in the way he framed the soffits.

If you follow the link in this thread by GJ'er, "keepup" he built similar soffits and framed using 1x8's. He wrote he was concerned about the weight of the framing on the rafters. I assume he tied into both the ceiling joists and roof rafters (where he could) but since he provides no details I question it. Plus, his thread just goes dead in 2014 well before he finished. Looks like he cut a hole through the ceiling drywall the same size as the 1x's so there's no way to see anything.

Dan, that's exactly what happened to us. After retirement we don't need family, dining and living rooms, just a great room open to the kitchen. Our kitchen wasn't all that open so I took down most of the wall between the kitchen and great room right after we moved in.

The pool can be a nightmare but we've had one for 45 years and take care of it ourselves. Three 3-inch chlorine tablets in a floating dispenser (chained to the coping) every couple of weeks and a Kreepy Krauly Great White Automatic Pool Cleaner running 8-hours a day takes care of the hard work. An occasional water test at the local pool supply (with whatever chemicals are needed to re-balance the water) and hosing down the filter when the back pressure reaches 10 pounds takes care of the rest. Once or twice a year I go over the walls with a pool brush.

OK Dan, I've shown you mine -- now show us yours (as soon as you can).
HINT: You need to start a thread on the new place!

You did a nice job, Bob.

Your Before & After reminds me very much of my kitchen/dining room project from 20 years ago. The wall between them was solid with ordinary door. Opposite wall had an archway to living room. I took out the entire wall, Supported the built-out attic above w/temporary wall and framed in a heavy header to support attic. Then made a large arch to mimic others in the house.

I copied the original arch doorway on the opposite wall of the dining room. There is an arched hearth opening & arch alcove w/wine rack in the living room. Also; now covered are 2 arch wall openings for 1920's candlestick phones!

Our new house is much larger than the current one, just under 2600 sq.ft. Only two of us but five grandchildren that are with us frequently and we wanted a pool for them. It's a pretty house but to me, too big....first world "problem", I know.:wtf:

We started out looking for an "open concept" w/ 3 bedrooms, hopefully larger than our current ones. "one thing led to another" and we were looking at bigger houses. But with that came a bigger, newer house overall. I grew up w/2 sisters in 1200 sq. ft. and our current/old house is 1800 but only because a prior owner built out the attic. New house was basically stripped to the studs and redone in 2015. Pools was built in 2018.

Dan, old and new places look great. Funny timing, I did our wall in 1997. Great room in the new house must look out on the pool. Perfect for keeping an eye on the grandkids while working in the kitchen or relaxing in your chair.

I see hills in the distance so I'm guessing you've moved a little east of Pasadena. I had a job offer in Thousand Oaks back in '73 but my boss turned it down for me (too valuable to transfer but not valuable enough to promote or give a raise). That was back when California real estate was a bargain. the brand new 2600 sq. ft. places I looked at were around $55,000.

Are you going to tease us with a photo of the garage?

Thanks guys. We ended up buying in Glendora.

I wanted a place in Monrovia up high in the hills. Looked and looked and looked. Lots of animals - deer, bears, etc. But it wasn't to be. Once we got to looking in Glendora you could just get so much more for your money. about 25 minutes further away from my daughter/our granddaughters, but now I'll just do all the commuting instead of splitting it with my daughter and son-in-law.

Granddaughters are too young to ever be allowed in pool without an adult in there with them but we won't mind. We have two 5-1/2 years olds and one 22 month old - that doesn't seem to like water. Actually, no pictures of the garage yet. The only pics I have so far are from the original listing.

Hey Dan. I was born at the old St Luke's in Pas and lived in Monrovia for 30 years. Spent lots of time in Glendora, went to Cal Poly.
I sure didn't think there would be lots that size in Glendora though. Good job with your patience paying off.
I think you and I are about the same age. Miss cruising Colorado?

Hi Rick. What caused you to move so far East?

I was born in East L.A. but my parents moved us out to the then-hinterlands of Whittier in 1956. Even way back then my mom knew ELA wasn't a good place to raise a child, especially a boy. Ironically, my girlfriend of now 20+ years, has 5 brothers and they all grew up in ELA. None of them were ever in a gang, got arrested, had drink or drug problems, all went to college, etc. I say pretty DAMN good parents!

I spent from age 18 months to 45 living in Whittier. Got divorced, my world turned upside down, and planned to move to Old Town Fullerton. I ended up in Pasadena when I couldn't find anything there to my liking. I cruised the hell out of Whittier Blvd. Got my driver's license in '70, had my dad's '55 Chevy hardtop then later a '66 Chevy van. Big slicks in back, whip antenna, the whole 70'd thing - UGH.
