I've gotten rid of almost all my shelving. The biggest payoff is in how things now don't get covered in sawdust or metal debris. It's also a much less cluttered look.
I put soffit style cabinets up high and (second-hand) metal ones down below.

I fit 42 bins inside this one:
This one has fasteners in small bins on the doors, room for a ladder on the side and also a place to hang my overalls. That top shelf has a few hundred pounds of angle plates. A Strong Hold cabinet is rated to hold 1900 pounds per shelf (although I've pulled most of the big Strong Hold shelves, though, to fit more inside).
Metal saw and miter saw can both stay out of sight when I'm not using him. The stereo stays cleaner inside the cabinet, too.
