Thanks Smitty,
Don’t you guys worry about me. I’m not planning to start a vintage iron grate collection. :)

Wait a minute...now that I think about it, way back when I bought my second bench vise, coincidentally also at an estate sale, I wasn’t planning on amassing a collection of almost a hundred bench vises!

What do you suppose the original purpose was for that grate?

When I saw it sitting in a soggy cardboard box with some other scrap on the driveway at an estate sale, I know it would be a good candidate for a rusty cast iron restoration experiment.

Smitty...Here's a crispier 1910 catalog scan for your vise that also answers the question about the brown color.

Major kudos to you for continually providing exceptional photos and catalog scans of your many vises to the vise community! You're kinda like the vise gift that keeps giving.

Thanks Jeppen I appreciate that. That’s a great scan, wrapped in paper and tied with a string.

Thanks Rusty, While I’ve seen catalog references to the no. 37 none of them showed any pictures so I had no idea it had an anvil. You learn something new every day.

Here are the last of my Stephens vises. While both are of the same patent, one has the handle for the hand vise the other a table clamp. Although there seem to be lots of ads for their lever vise, as of yet, I have not seen an advertisement for this vise.

Good vise pics here lately. Thanks all for posting to keep our spirits up.

Is it time now for us to post our hand vises? Let’s see ‘em! Thanks for taking the lead Mike. Yours are great.

Here are 2 of mine. No ID markings so I don’t know makers. Rather generic.

Like most of you guys, I’m keeping my eye out for a bargain priced Starrett.

Yeah, the 1A size seems really rare. From what I know about the series, the jaw width must be pretty small. Like 2 inches? Into the jewelers vise territory.

Hand vises aren’t seen on these pages too often. The two I posted are my only ones.

There is a group of 3 now listed on that big online auction site that are very similiar to the wingnut ones loydski and I have. Starting bid is $279 for the 3. :shocking:

This hand vise was patent in oct 8 1901 by Joseph Goodrich in Chicago Illinois. The vise design was meant to hold a piece with parallel jaws and a leverage handle for strong clamping forces. This vise was used in places where having a standard pattern vise would be impractical.

Mine is from the late 1800’s. The hand vise will come loose from the bench mount by tapping out a post vise style wedge that’s attached to the chain. I believe this could have been used by a gunsmith because it appears to have a saddle strap holder on the bottom.

I believe that vise design was also a Joseph Goodrich patent. 6885f751bb23369e6bfb1998af920954.jpg

You guys are doing great!! Rusty's is the first Goodrich patent of that style I’ve seen. Looks just like the patent drawing.

Here’s another seldom seen one. This is a Butler patent that was in this condition when I got it. Probably because the little screw that holds the main adjustment screw in place was broken off. Took a little while to fix that.
Jaws are 1 1/8 inches wide and oal is 5 1/4 inches.

Here’s a rather strange one. I don’t know why the jaws were constructed this way, but I’m sure the Wade Machinery Company in Boston had something in mind.

Jaws are 7/8 inches wide and overall length is 7 3/8 inches.

I pick up cool cast iron at times as well!

Shift I have a similarly sized grate and I'm planing a new gate to the front patio - its going into the gate as a sort of "window"

I've also used some as garden art...

Well damn, I guess I should have looked more careful at this “good condition” 103R. It was very dirty when I bought it and the brazing was painted. Grrrrrr

This just showed up. A bit bigger than I was expecting :shocking:

][/QUOTE]

I'd suggest a couple things.

1.) Take it apart and look for metal chips on the inside of the main housing. The one I had was full of metal chips.

2.) Get rid of the o ring bumpers and put on actual bumpers out of rubber sheet. Tip, the ends are threaded on the handle. Those little o rings aren't enough to cushion the blow of that large of a handle.

Goodrich was granted a second patent for his hand vise design (First patent - #227686). The second patent (#308356) , issued 25 Nov 1884, expands on the first one and closely resembles your model as well.

Happens from time to time. I thought I found a score on this monarch pattern makers vise only to notice the weld after I showed up to buy the vise. It wasn’t a expensive one and I’m pretty sure some one will want the screw and nut as both are in excellent shape.

I may try to piece the 103 out and see if I can get some money back, if I can’t get the brazing to look better. Best way is probably on EBay I’m assuming?
