I found this old rusty thing in my grandpa's shop when cleaning it out after he passed away. Anybody have any idea what it is used for?

Pulling staples maybe?

Close. It's a nail puller. I have one. It works great if you don't mind damaging the board. You set the open jaw over the nail head. As you use the slide hammer handle to drive the jaw under the head it closes. Then you extend the handle and pry towards the foot.

You need a sacrificial board under the foot to keep from damaging the board attached, but usually, like when opening crates, it doesn't matter if the board is damaged or not... If you find a fairly thin, tough and flat prybar, it was to loosen the lid to be able to grab the nail heads better...

Not that I would be old enough to remember when things were shipped in wooden crates...

You're going to damage the board more where you drive the jaws in/under the head.

When I was young and worked on a carpenter's crew we were building concrete forms on a large construction project. Forms were stripped then the wood disassembled and built back into new forms on a regular on going basis. Those things were the go to tool when you couldn't get a nail with a crow bar or any other method. You'd go through the old forms with hammers and crow bars and make your final pass with one of those pullers and boy was it indispensable.
