Lets say I have a piece or steel plate or tubing with an inside feature or hole.

If I want to do anything in there as far as smoothing, blending or similar- now I have 2 options. AO Drum on a mandrel and AO flap wheel.

IMO both of these really ****. You get about 10 seconds of real use out of AO, the drums are a pain to change and the flap wheels just disintegrate on plate.

What are my other options? I am seeing and reading "cartridge rolls". I can find those in straight, taper, zirc and ceramic. Are these any good? Never was around them.

I also could be temped to buy some mounted hard rocks, but that I can just pick a few and try.

Target use would be on a 1/4 straight die grinder.

Alright. I ordered one of these ( about 10 bucks cheaper on eBay ) to give it a try.

I have a few boxes of these Merits that I picked up last year. To tell the truth I forgot about them....and haven't used them yet.

But I did get them from a pro structural steel fabricator (He was closing up shop and moving). He bought top notch tools and frikin used them to their full potential. I would presume that if he bought those it's because they are top notch as well.

And I agree, I just killed a flap wheel on a hole-inside-plate. The plate ate right into it. 3/16" plate IIRC.

Cool. I think it might work out, based on some demos I've seen online.

I ordered some in an assortment pack, I just didn't need any opinions on them.

I've got about 20 burrs. I'm looking to a smoother finish. I've done some damage over the years with burrs! :lol_hitti

Makes sense now. Can you follow up with this when you get the cartridge style? I’ve never used them and am curious how well they work.

Same here...I've probably picked up 100+ name Brand burrs...a lot of them carbide. They're great for roughing, but not baby face smooth finish.

I'm going to bust out the cartridge ones this weekend and try them.

Cool. I did read the glue dot goes towards the user when you are using a straight roll.

I have to wait on FedEx to bring mine next week :(

Are you using double cut burrs?

Also, yes, using a burr doesnt offer the most finesse. Interested to see what you find out.

Cartridge rolls are used heavily in the porting of cylinder heads (cast iron instead of steel), but they work great for that purpose. Various grits for a variety of finishes.
