Love the polish photos! Back in the 90's, I fell in love with "Blue Magic" polish & polished the hell out of lots-o-**** with it. I have one last tub of it, that I've had for at least a decade. It may now be a bit crusty...I'll have to look. :D

This is the first I've heard of Busch brand polish, gonna have to check it out.

Mike, Benchmark Abrasives is a terrible place. They have things I need and they have things I haven't seen anywhere else. They have so many horribly distracting things that I filled my cart with them and forgot about putting FREEMIX in the box when I checked out. I ended up ordering:

I would be really upset if the prices were unreasonable but they aren't. I was also expecting long shipping delays but the order I placed Saturday was shipped on Monday and it arrived today.

Still a tiny bit upset, I went back and ordered the FREEXIX pack of ten 4.5" Zirconia flap disks :

Now I have to to work on some steel projects so I can try out some of those flap wheels.

Mike, the only reason I'm upset with Benchmark Abrasives is because I can't be upset with you.

Bob, glad you had a pleasant experience with them and I agree, the prices are actually quite good, especially for the quality.

Sorry you're upset however.:lol_hitti

I've used the Blue Magic before but the tube went bad over the years and I just hadn't replaced it. I found this Busch's Aluminum Polish about 20 years ago in an FMCA (Family Motor Coach Association) magazine shortly after we bought our second coach and we joined the FMCA. The only place I had ever seen it advertised was in the FMCA monthly magazine. I decided to try some and have been hooked on it ever since.

I turned my cousin on to it about 10 years ago and he now has a display and sells it in his shop in Ogden, UT.

Dan, so it would be on a Roadmaster chassis and if it had a tag axle it would have to be a Navigator, especially with the big CAT engine. Those are nice coaches. The Ambassador didn’t come with a tag axle nor the large displacement engine. If memory serves the early-2000’s Ambassadors has the 350 hp Cummins engine. Either way I’m sure that wasn’t an easy repair.

Just in case you're interested. I talked to my friend and the shop he is working with stated that they've done a lot of these, it's a know weak design. It was the first year they did a tag and modified a stock truck axle. Later units were done using a formed tube as you stated. $18,000 was the estimate but the coach is worth 3 times that so worth doing. He's considering getting a smaller trailer now.

WOW, $18k. Are they updating the axle to the formed tube style?

I didn't realize they used a modified square tube axle pre-mine. I'll have to look at my cousins 1998 Signature as it would be on the same chassis as the Navigator as they are nearly the same coach. If memory serves Monaco purchased Holiday Rambler around 1996~ish time frame.

Thanks for the information Dan. I like to keep apprised of the various information around RV's for some reason.

A little washing machine maintenance tonight. I got home from work and the wife said that the washer would cut in and out intermittently and opening and closing the lid helped some times. Although her idea of opening and closing the lid was opening it and slamming it shut. I cringed and said there’s no need to beat the **** out of the poor thing.

Upon a quick inspection I noticed that the end of the little plastic plunger that activated the switch was corroded and worn off ever so slightly at the tip.

I dug through my small diameter aluminum stock and found a piece that would work.

Turned the diameter down to .160” by 1.050” in length.

Drilled and tapped the other end to accept a 6-32 screw.

Rubber washer slipped right back over to soften the closing.

She informed me that it ran a complete cycle without issue so I guess that was a successful repair.

Another fine repair job Mike. But I'm baffled why the tube of Busch's Aluminum Polish was not utilized in the making of such a fine piece of a repair part. It begs the question, is the wife not good enough for something shiny.........or are we witnessing the beginning of the end to extreme OCD??.

Tune in next week folks when shear guilt overtakes Mike and he details the inside of the wifes gas tank.

Mike I was laughing so hard on the washing machine I had tears. It so cool to see you make a simple piece and of course improve it while doing so. Thank you for sharing

Thanks JC. At first I thought about just using a long screw and rounding the end off, then just running a nut up against the end but as I was looking for a screw in the storage bins I just couldn't bring myself to do that and needed something a bit nicer, plus I was itching to use the lathe last night for some reason.:bounce:

I am rather surprised you took the easy route on repairing that washer.

I was getting ready to see a new lid being made.

I think they are building a new axle. I'll find out later when it gets closer to being done.

On a side note, the wife and I might be over your way sometime in the near future. I have an invite to stay at a friends house and do some desert riding, he lives in the St George area and can drive the SXS's directly from his house. I really hope this works out, I'd love to see some of the Utah desert and mountains. The pictures I've seen are amazing.

Last night I took about an hour and reassembled my Vertex rotary table that I disassembled and cleaned a couple of weeks ago.

I noticed that the input shaft to the eccentric bore was fairly tight so after measuring I decided to polish the bore as well as the shaft that was off by a couple thou.

After a final spray with brake wash as a final cleaning I packed the bearings with grease, applied some way oil #2 to the underside of the table and began assembly.

Thank you. It looked brand new when I purchased it at the estate sale about 12 or so years ago and haven't used it a lot but it definitely needed some attention as it was hard to turn. Works like a charm now.

I appreciate the comments and thanks for following along.

I have a Vertex like yours, but it came with a swappable 3-jaw chuck and a set of indexing plates in various numbers of spaces. They have tapered notches for a movable stop plunger to engage. Should come in handy for doing bolt circles.

Yeah, there is a Vertex kit that comes with indexing plates to use for circles, gears, etc. I've been eyeballing one but haven't pulled the trigger yet. Same with a 6" 3-jaw chuck. Right now I've been taking the 6" 3-jaw off of my weld positioner when I need it but I would like to get one dedicated to the rotary table when it comes along.

These aren't the dividing head plates. These go under the table, and there are six of them.

This morning after a few cups of coffee while sitting on the deck I finally made it out to the shop to begin work.

First order of business was to change the order of equipment along the wall on machinery row. I moved the vertical bandsaw a couple feet further south (left in the picture), then moved the bench grinder to the other side of the drill press and the combination belt/disk sander in between the drill press and the vertical bandsaw.

efe9e543a7e2aa5562d76dbabe354de9.jpg

All that to get my garbage can closer to the lathe and mill. [emoji23]
2dd7722104f319e8b174df6ddb1b99c8.jpg

Basically it created a little space right here between the vertical bandsaw and my lathe.
438ebfdd255a3ff9623a5186702deedf.jpg

Now I have about 32-36 inches for whatever may come in to the shop in the near future.[emoji12]

Then as I was starting to work on the project of the day and getting the video camera setup I happened to look down and see the small antenna from my wireless lavalier lying on the floor. That definitely explained the audio difficulties I was having in my last video. [emoji848]

50b18212835b77d1c54af1435b0d3aa2.jpg

Opened up the unit and out came the soldering equipment.

Soldered and repaired.
cc146184b0c408720cffee6cf0d90836.jpg

Put the unit back together and ready to test the sound quality.

Audio works and now that it’s about noon I could actually start on the project I went out into the shop to do this morning. [emoji1]

Does it have anything to do with that 1/2 engine case sitting there? :)

The engine case was the project of the day but ended up getting slightly pushed back due to a family activity that came up in the afternoon. I did get a little work done on it so stay tuned for an update on that project, as well as a video that will be following.

Thanks for following along and for the astute eye. However, that's not what I created the extra space for so stay tuned.....

No, my bench grinder pedestal is not secured to the floor. I built that many years ago and made the fourth leg adjustable and it stays put very well with absolutely no walking at all.

Thanks for checking in and for following along.

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Now I need to brace it up make mounts for dies and paint as well!

That otta work.

I am going to build a cart for my tube roller and then when it's ready for paint I think I am going to break my tube bender down and paint the cart for it. When I built it years ago I thought I would wait and see how it works before tearing it down for paint but I've never painted it. I need to fix that.

JC, getting a good grinder makes a big difference. I was lucky enough to get some used Baldors like Mike and they are silky smooth.

Agreed. The Baldor's are nice and very smooth operating. I have a wire wheel on one side that I generally use for cleaning bolt threads and my aluminum oxide wheel for sharpening of drill bits and HSS machine tools on the other.

Between Saturday morning and this evening I was able to perform a repair to a motorcycle engine case for a fellow forum member.

The drain plug threads were stripped as well as an earlier attempt to repair and it looks like maybe some JB Weld was possibly used as there was what appeared to be some residue in the previous weld.

Piece of 6061 I’ll use for the slug.

There’s a couple ways I could have gone about this. One would have been to machine the existing bung completely off and replace with a new bung. The other was to build up around the existing bung with new weld using 4043 rod and displace the porosity from the casting then bore out and machine a threaded slug to press into the bore and weld.

I chose the latter for the main reason being that the case was fairly thin at this point and much heat at all may have severely warped the area without the cast in bung to give it rigidity. By creeping up on the thickness by adding material I could control the heat much better and float the impurities from the casting to the surface, remove them and add more material in increments until I obtained the thickness I was after.

Material added and the impurities removed with lightly using a carbide burr.

When using carbide burrs on aluminum I like to repetitively dip the burr in Formax with a light coating to prevent the burr from plugging up.

Drilled and tapped to 10mm x 1.25 thread. The slug is about .001” larger than the bore for a slight interference fit.

I put the slug in the freezer for a couple of hours while I mowed the lawn. Then heated the case to a couple hundred degrees and used the drill chuck in the mill as a press.

I placed some 400-grit sandpaper on the surface plate and lapped the case half as a final check.
