I'm trying to get up to speed on the Reed vises. Is one or both of the Reed vises below an example of the "oval badge" you are inquiring about?

Yes, both of the vises (in the foreground) of your pictures are what I would consider "oval badge" Reeds. I believe both to be made by Columbian, but Angry Beaver is the resident Reed expert and seemed to imply only the gray vise you posted was made by Columbian.

Yes he is and I agree with his implication. Besides the completely different style, the Columbian vises are much lighter than the OEM Reeds. From what data I have gathered, Reed was selling Columbian made machinist vises at least into the very early 2000's.

One thing that makes me think even the early 70s "oval badge" Reeds (the first pic you posted) were made by Columbian is the T style jaws. Also, the casting features of these Reeds compared to the R series are different. But I certainly havent done a deep dive on it.

Smitty - That might be one of the largest collections of 6" bullets in North America. Nice line up. Just need the 60 SJ.

Thanks guys. Good old fashion American vises are hard to beat and these have paid their dues as far a work in concerned. The 60 is the only NOS entry. The 60 SJ and the sky crane are proving to be quite elusive but I’m a patient man. I feel lucky to have a gaggle of Wilton’s.

Thanks! edward472 set me straight on that. I had no idea they didn’t come with a chain etc.
Dlavallee22 helped explain what a swivel jaw is etc.
I’ve learned a lot in a few weeks.

Well I put the Wilton Model 60 SJ back together today so I could give Mr. Scott the weight. According to my wife's bathroom scales it was a trim 124 lbs. The maximum effect opening of the jaws is 9 inches for recording on the spread sheet.

No, I think they were Reed Made vises with columbian style jaws. Casting of the static, dynamic and bases are the same as 1950's models. i don't see any variances in the casting to warrant thinking anyone else made them..

Did Columabin make the jaws? I couldn't tell you for certain. the tooth pattern is typical reed pattern, not columbian pattern. the dill pin holes don't line up with any columbian I've ever ran across.

N and S series? no way.

500 and 600 series plus the CA series.. yup 100% columbian made in warren ohio, both before and after wilton owned them.

Picked up some company for the Wilton today. About 165 pounds of Vanderman #3 with lots of character! 6" jaws and 14" opening. I need a younger back or stick with smaller vises.

Shucks those jaws are worth $1000 if you had to have them made. I think it is a fair price. Be patient. I sold this vise setup for $1500 4 years ago.

As a life long tradesman my back feels like it’s full of broken glass on a good day. I saw this used lift truck come up and it has literally saved my back. It has a handle in the back that you crank up or down. This model is made from aluminum so it’s easy to throw in the back of the truck when you’re going on a buy.

Lots of 8” vises in good shape sell for north of 1K. What’s so absurd?

200lbs is good for most stuff around here. More than that I'll bust out the cherry picker or neighbors tractor ...but both are a pita.

I like yours as it has rubber wheels for rough ground. I have this one which I use all the time on concrete only, but 400 lbs. CL find $150

Those lifts are nice. Some day I'll find one. Now I am stuck with using my chain fall and my roll around cart/welding table. I am getting older now and in more of a need for a lift.

I am a fan of hoyer lifts. 400 lb capacity and they are very maneuverable. The front leg spacing can also be adjusted easily with a lever. They also come apart in two pieces for easy transport. While really meant for lifting invalid patients, they are great for lifting tools and vises. The load spreader shown is removable. You can find them on Craigslist for reasonable

Those lifts would come in handy. I use a 1000lb lift cart, but it’s not really portable. A crane would be nice too.

Yesterday I ended up mounting this Rock Island 577 outside. The paint job isn’t my best, but his will be an outdoor user. Have a nice set of KMScott hard jaws on it and made a rough set of copper jaws to fit it.

The trash can is being used to soak the seized upReed 406 in a 1:1 mix of ATF/Acetone (see last pic). Hope to pull that out in a week and get it moving.

I picked up and then cleaned up this old Wilton 3" a while back. I intended on keeping it, but am now considering selling it on.
I've read near every vise thread and thought I'd throw out these questions.

I don't have the facilities to repair the broken jaw support(which is broken off about 1" out of the 3"). I know I can use it "as is", but what would be a reasonable cost to have it repaired?

If I decide to sell it, what would be a fair asking price?

I would appreciate any thoughts or suggestion. Thanks guys.

Nah, I was joking more or less. I think I sold it at a fair price. There is a balance though, price too low and have 40 calls on it or price it too high and have none.

Nice job in the 577, that vise is a beast. It’s amazing how a fresh set of jaws brings it back to life like that. Hopefully you have a cover for it.
