These are getting harder to find than hens teeth. It’s a Prentiss no 19 in good condition. You don’t see many of the circle sided ones, 979b7261482c6a6973455d6408f8f53e.jpg5e01ce1eaa4951d6e1a0a31cdebea65a.jpgI’ve only found two and they were both painted green.

Here’s the other circle side no. 19 that I got about a year and a half ago. It looks like the same color.26054d0913de973c504b094a6386f5cd.jpg

Nice pair you got Smitty, I painted mine a green color, maybe a little flashy for some but shucks I had fun getting it in tip top shape, it is working again in a homeowners bench.

For you guys who frequently pick up BIG vises I made this little attachment to make moving them safely if you have an engine lift, crane, chain hoist or forklift.

I WANT ONE!!!!!

Nice lift lis2323, I like yours too. Here is another design that I use. Capturing underneath the jaws works well with these designs. Happy to share my drawing.

Have a Charles Parker No. 436 vise, PAT. 1930. Purchased it from a gentleman in Vermont several years ago. Does anyone on this great site know where pipe jaws & mounting pins for this vise can be obtained? Would like to attach a couple images of this vise, but cannot see how this is done. Selecting the button asks for a URL, just like the button. Please advise. Thank you.

I have a 436 packed away. The pins are normal steel rod. Either 1/4 or 5/16 IIRC.

Next time I pull it out I can scan the Jaws for you. They are very simple.

I think the Columbian was prior to Wilton take over. The casting are marked with "M" I believe that means Malleable Iron.

Thank You,

Tim

PS: I am having a hard time setting up a new post. I don't see a tab for that.

Here is one I found recently that is kind of strange. At first I thought it said "No 4" but after a couple days in the electrolysis tanks when I wipe some WD40 on it the magic happened. It appears someone ground off the X and the o in "C. Parker C_" really odd I thought. It is really in nice shape and will clean up nice.

Thanks, they’re getting harder to find. Your 19 looks really clean with lots of crisp edges. I’m going to get one of those printed bullets with my stimulus money.

I told myself I wouldn't buy anymore vises, but then this Reed 106 was just 20 min from the house. Pulled fresh from a barn that was being demolished 2 days ago

Finally done with this Reed 106. Electrolysis tank, wire wheeled, with a BLO finish. Still can't read the date stamp. Can anyone hazard a guess about age?

What type and size jaw screws were originally used in a Wilton "Bullet" HD 8400 (4" jaws) made in February 1949? On the 'Repair' thread down on the VB I just posted an issue I was having (they're not 5/32" hex, and not 3/16" hex, seemingly 11/64" hex) with one, and GETRIDAONE advised me that they may be metric replacements. I thick-of-headly hadn't thought of that. He also said the original screws were plain flat slot heads. So I came up here and did some searching on sizes in case I was to replace the replacements and I found a post back in 2014 (#19829, page 992) by KMScott to someone who seemed to be having the same issue, linked here, that seems to indicate they were hex heads. (But not 11/64"!) So which is it? Or what am I even more thick-of-headly missing?

Smitty - you cant go wrong getting one of these little 3D printed bullets from Rich.

Loydski- very nice. I’d like to have the real one like you do!

Edward - looks great! I would be interested in seeing your electrolysis tank, as I’m about to set one up myself. As for manufacturing date, my guess is between 1915 and 1930, but check these areas of your vise (and the same spots on the other side) for a date stamp.

I can only see a faint outline of a date stamp I can't read. Thanks for narrowing down the date. Here's a pic of my tank. Nothing fancy. Big plastic tub, 4 worn out lawnmower blades and a battery charger

Good stuff, thanks. Do you leave the charger and tank outside while it’s running?

YES. Always outside and no stainless steel for the sacrificial pieces. Even though it's a small chance, the process produces hydrogen gas which can build up in an enclosed space. One spark and you got a mini Hindenburg.

Sounds like your screws are 1/4:20, if they used a 6mm Socket Head Cap Screw then the key would be a 5mm which is .196, 11/16 is .172. If they did use a metric screw then the threads are buggered up and might need a heli-coil to replace with english screws. I did not research the socket head cap screws back in the mid to late 40's but it would not surprise me if they did use a different allen wrench. My Machinery Hand Book would tell me.

Your original jaws should be 4 x 3/4 x 1/2" thick with 1/4:20 Phillips round head style screws on center with 2-3/8 Center to Center screw holes. The socket head cap screws can be a replacement but were not original in the first generation Wiltons.

Thanks. So no issues with rain or the elements leaving the tank and battery charger outside?

A dog might be stupid enough to drink out of an electrolysis tank. The sodium carbonate solution with some iron in it isn’t particularly poisonous, but nevertheless, I’d consider that when running an e tank.

All good feedback. Thanks, guys. I’m going to get a tank set up and drop the 406 in. Will keep you posted.

I use those plastic tubs with the yellow lids from the hardware store and then set the lid on top with some weight to keep it semi covered. Outside always and lids resting on top. I cover the old charger up (with ventilation) if it might rain There is a complete Parker 4X in there and the small tank has a Wilton soaking in simple green inside that plastic tarp. Same type plastic tub just the smaller size.

Looks good.
What material is that grid electrode? Or is that plastic? Lots of nice surface area and well spread out for line of sight action for the electricity. Probably more effective than the usual half a dozen pieces of rebar.

If it’s plastic light diffuser grid, what is your electrode material?

There will not be a date where you have pictured. these date will be on the non logo side. The R models mainly have them where you have circled. the pre R's and first decade of R's are on the non logo side

Just for your information, there are freely available studies about hydrogen embrittlement in cast iron (mostly for the oil/natural gas and nuclear industry) and even one about electrolysis as means to load it with hydrogen. If you think about how the embrittlement works, cast iron is obviously a prime candidate (that made me look in the first place). They aren't an easy read but very interesting.

yeah, I couched by saying to look on both sides. Btw, do you think the oval badge Reeds were not made by Columbian?

I second that question...oval badged Reeds were made by Columbian, right? Or not?

I'm trying to get up to speed on the Reed vises. Is one or both of the Reed vises below an example of the "oval badge" you are inquiring about?

Thanks in advance!

Here it is next to a 3” Starrett. These little vises are fun to collect but they’re hard to find.1bfddbb99142f4c70333913e7a3c6b6c.jpgd2fcce7273fb0f2d7b06dd0f523ef680.jpg

My first rodeo with vises. I was given this Reed 403 1/2 in the 80’s by a friend. Not until this month did I find time and interest in cleaning her up. With help from good GJ folks I learned about swivel jaws and how to find the date stamp (1240). A little elbow grease & 2 coats of Rustoleum Verde Green Hammered later...here she is!
