I'm in year 3 of my 25x35 barn/garage build and am about 98% done with the interior. I am looking for some advice/input about hanging some kind of a hoist system inside one of the bays for the top to my K5.

The bottom chord of the attic trusses I used are designed to carry a 40 psf live load, with an additional 10 psf dead load, and are spaced 2' OC. My K5 top weighs somewhere around 275 lbs. and would only be hung in the summer when there is no snow load.

Was thinking about using 2 pieces of Unistrut about 8' apart, run perpendicular across at least 3 trusses and then suspending some kind of a 4 point hoist system from the Strut.

Thanks in advance for any thoughts. Just wondering if you think that would work.

I know, I know, but I think you will be fine. Could you and your wife go into the attic and stand next to each other w/o the roof collapsing? One thing you could maybe do is set it up close to the wall (one of the two the trusses sit on) as possible.

Unfortunately your pictures don't work but with attic trusses that have a bottom chord rated for load I think you should be fine. The weight will be distributed enough that it won't have much effect. I have attic trusses in my garage and for a time hung a pickup topper from the trusses without any issues. I just put four lag screws in the trusses, one for each corner of the topper, and hung it with some heavy duty tiedown straps.

Thanks CraigStu. Appreciate the feedback.

Thanks for taking the time to respond Stuart. I wonder why my pics aren't showing up? Sorry about that. Going to try to fix that.

To save some $, instead of Ustrut just put a couple hand selected 2x4's on edge on top of bottom chords.

Marc

Thanks Marc. Good idea. The space above the garage is finished...we put a floor in and have all kinds of storage up there in the attic, so I can only access the bottom of the bottom cords.

OK, so whatever you screw up there under the rock ceiling I recommend GRK RSS screws.

And make sure you get into center of meat by pocking ice pick up along the sides of the member.

Check EVERY one... do NOT depend on 24" exact c-c, any truss COULD be up to an inch off.

I was thinking that 2x4 on edge will distribute the weight more evenly than a half Ustrut... But Full strut would be stiffer than Half.

GRK RSS individuals (Not full box)( or Hillman clones)can be found at most real Hardware stores or lumberyards.

Lowes has them individually NEXT TO the smaller torx screws,(Like "Decking Screws") NOT in the big little bins aisle... but they may only have the like 6" and longer individual (not full box)
